So, all the back alleys, footpaths and cut throughs that aren't on Google's maps will slowly become apparent because Android phones will show them in regular use? Cool. Way to go Big Brother! Virtual desire lines.

Re: Really?

I know one guy who used to decamp to various ski resorts for the ski season, with his MacBook Pro, and would make a living shooting "extreme sports" style DVDs for the Kensington crowd. Spend a day on the piste shooting footage, edit it overnight, burn a DVD for them next day, all for £100-200. Split between a group of friends, it was a nice souvenir.

82 London Underground stations to get free Wi-Fi for the Olympics

TRT
Silver badge

Re: Bollox to the wifi

Innumerable reasons why this is much more difficult that people imagine. The only reason they are there on (part of) the Jubilee line is that they were designed in from the off - everything on the extension has them, from Westminster to Stratford. Don't forget, the Jubilee used to terminate at Charing Cross - the stations to the north have no PEDs (platform edge doors).

Wealthy Kensington & Chelsea residents reject BT fibre cabinets

TRT

Re: Creativity

I've seen them. They are ugly as sin. I can't blame the council for rejecting them. In the good old days, they'd make public utility cabinets look like little park-keeper's houses and site them in the numerous greens and gardens. There's a couple of big ones at the end of my road in a park that they put there in the 1920s when they moved the gas, water and electricity points away from a junction they thought they might have to enlarge in the near future (they didn't).

Yes, the Turbomotive. Sadly wrecked at Harrow & Wealdstone and rebuilt as a standard piston type. If you go through Harrow & Wealdtone, you can see the over-bridge is not riveted in the centre section where it had to be rebuilt after the crash. A mess that was.

I can't see this project hitting its goals, though.

the clicker remotes. We used to hide on the staircase when I was visiting my friend who had one of these sets and clap loudly to annoy his parents or siblings who were trying to watch TV.

Of course, I now want one of the old ray-gun style remotes retrofitted with a modern IR all-in-one remote.
