Here here. I've ditched Words With Friends because of all the Facebook and Twitter cr** in your face all the time.

*I* will choose the *WHAT*, *WHEN* and *HOW* of my online social interaction, thank you very much.

Re: Huh?

<quote>I start with a cheap ex-corporate IBM box from eBay, then tweak it to my satisfaction </quote>

Hmm... our facilities director bought a job lot of Dells from a broker. They'd been pulled out of the sweat room of a Dutch investment bank. We benched them all out, each of our new classrooms held 64 of them, powered them on by WoL ready for Ghost-casting and within 30 seconds had to abandon floor as the air filled with the fug the PSU fans pumped out. Apparently smoking was still allowed in the trading rooms, smoking of dubious substances too by the stink. It took use a week of 24/7 running, a case of air freshener and the aircon set to full speed before a novel nose couldn't detect the pong anymore. Couldn't risk the students either complaining of or enjoying the smell.

Re: Go to Jail

A certain well known IT company (who some would say would see Parker Bros in court if they rounded the corners of the playing board!) was for years rumoured to have based its logo on Turning's end move. OK, it's an urban myth, but a very pervasive one and the one that many years ago made me hunt out the chap's contribution to science. I'd prefer to play the game variation that's been included.

The recent news about Sharp...

has had me reminiscing about the old Sharp portables with their dot matrix scrolly screens. This just looks good, OK? That's why. Now, where did I leave that old VT-52 and Tektronix Vectorscope?

This is not good news.

I worked in the kitchens of their Manchester plant as a student in the 80s. And I also worked for Tandy, who rebadged loads of their kit and sold it under their Realistic name. It was good merchandise, and a great place to work.

This is a rather drastic step for them to take. I hope they can pull it off.

Dredd movie review

Re: This ain't Dredd

The look of the Stallone one was much better than the stills and clips of this that I've seen so far. I had the good fortune to "meet" the big robot from the Stallone film at a launch event in Levesden studios (along with the Alien Queen, Darth Vader, the Aliens APC etc...) Anyway, the robot and the GM judges and all of that... too much in one film, too much of a departure from the old 70s/80s Dredd I read at boarding school...

Re: and........

As my old boss and world authority on colour vision would have pointed out, it's not what you can measure, it's what you perceive.

He has astonished many people over the years by turning a "red" piece of paper into a "green" piece of paper by doing nothing more than holding up a larger piece of multi-coloured paper behind it, thus demonstrating that what they had been taught in school about "coloured light" was patently wrong or at best a misleading over-simplification.

Well seeing as how printer ink costs more than champagne...

I can't see this being a cheap option.

Although if they DO make a food printer (isn't that an early form of Star Trek food replicator?), I could see it being useful for printing out a sandwich or something - except what do you do about the error messages? JAM in output tray for example?

Re: Prior Art

Hmm... not exactly seamless. Nerve wracking, actually, as the CD suddenly stops and some loud stranger with an even louder jingle starts yammering at 300 words a minute reeling off road designations and things my Beethoven-adapted brain isn't ready to receive yet. Now if it buffered the radio broadcast and faded the source I was listening to into the traffic bulletin...

In a way...

It's nice that it'll watch all the other channels for me and warn me that there's something I'd find much more interesting than, say, Deal or No Deal, on one of the other channels. Something like a Horizon I hadn't seen that I'd be kicking myself for missing if I'd left "Jason & The Argonauts" on in favour of nothing better being on at the time I'd checked the guide.

But I bet they can't get it to work. I've turned off genius and all the other social networking crap in iTunes because they're useless.

Re: Liked Amy...

I quite liked Rory. Well, the Doctor/Rory interplay anyway, not so much the Rory / Amy stuff. The way the Doctor would just nod at Rory to tell him to go after Amy, or tell him secrets about stuff in a low voice... it rather reminded me of the relationship he had with Ian Chesterton - a kind of unvoiced, shared chivalry when things got dangerous.

Well...

We had One-to-One, which merged into T-mobile, we've got O2, and Three, EE have just been awarded the 4G spectrum, and E times E is E squared and 4 is a square number...

but just a number on its own isn't that distinctive and could be confused with the TV station, so I think we need a letter. So a letter that is both quirky (like Orange used to be) and denotes quality (T-mobile had a fair business reputation I suppose), and should also reflect wide coverage, i.e. quantity... and speed of 4G is important too, so think quick... I reckon Q is a good candidate...

So how about calling it The 4Q Network? Or just 4Q for short.
