Long-term Linux Mint: 19.3 release unchains the Gimp, adds HiDPI, is kind to your older, less-beefy kit

Re: TV remake

A few years back a friend came over to visit from Japan and I showed her an episode of Monkey (she'd grown up with the original Japanese version). She thought the English dub was absolutely fantastic. She said that the voice actors really captured the essence of the characters.

Huge flying arse makes successful test flight

Bit Brain

I grew up a few miles from Farnborough. When I was little our house had a flat roof and we used to sit on the roof and watch the displays from the air show flying over. The Red Arrows used to fly directly over our house, as did Concorde.

Bit Brain

Would have been nice if you'd included some pics of said test flight.

I managed to get a few shots as it passed our house in Bedford.

No, that honour goes to the Saturn version on Sega Ages.

Want to download free AV software? Don't have a Muslim name

"I just hope they didn't try to download any anti-virus software."

Good point. I wonder how well AV software copes with someone connecting a PowerBook to an alien wireless network and typing "upload virus".

Oh look – Office Mobile apps to go with your shiny Windows 10

Bit Brain

Not just viewers

"While the Office Mobile apps are free to download, however, to actually edit documents and create new ones you'll need an Office 365 subscription. Otherwise, the apps are little more than glorified Office document viewers"

Not true. On small tablets you have editing functionality without a subscription.

You’re NOT fired: The story of Amstrad’s amazing CPC 464

Bit Brain

I think the large borders were to accommodate the amount of overscan on some cheaper TVs.

Some programmers were able to use nonstandard resolutions though; the Amstrad version of Arkanoid used a full-screen mode for its intro (albeit only displaying a starfield and some scrolly text) and portrait mode for the game.

Setting default apps

"> Any link in email or another app therefore opens in Safari, even when Chrome is present.

The Android approach is to present the user a choice every time a relevant link or file is tapped... ie, click a link, and asked which browser to use. Is there any way to set a 'default action' in Android?"

Either click the checkbox for "always use" or click the "always use" or "this time only" button, depending on how old a verzion of Android you're using. IIRC the latter method is valid for ICS and later.

Yes, I've been playing with it (ooo-err!) for a couple of hours now. It's definitely an improvement over Honeycomb. The stock browser is much better and scrolls nicely without the annoying tiling that the HC browser does. The typing lag in the browser seems to be gone as well. Overall, it's a great update.
