What will we do with 600MHz?

dave 46

data

Just data, I'm fed up of not being able to VPN into work unless I drive into a town to pickup a 3G signal.

Take the lake district, only 1 provider (3) has a single mast anywhere within the park.

I know disconnecting and getting away from it all is the ideal, but if you have responsibilities you cannot get away from the lack of wireless data in in the rural UK is a pita.

Aren't they both effectively beta?

And take up of beta software just shows how many geeks and developers you have on board?

If you're looking to declare a winner in some new battle of the great browser wars you've got a while to wait yet.

MPs now free to surf and tweet

dave 46
WTF?

Nutters

"the Speaker has previously made it clear that it was unacceptable for a Member to be prompted by information on the screen in the course of a speech"

So it's okay to check your mail or tweet while you're supposed to be listening to what people are saying (if not why be in the chamber, sod off to your office) but reading out a prepared speech from a device, or simply reciting an email from a constituent during the course of a speech, is not allowed?

The worst sort of anti-social behavior is allowed but serving a useful purpose isn't - sums up our politics quite nicely.

Steve Jobs vindicated: Google Android is not open

dave 46

I can't say I care about the source but

My best guess would be Google don't want 3rd rate chinese manufacturers chucking this on smart phones so they can say "look at us we have android 3.0, buy many handsets please" which will in turn antagonise the big partners and maybe even result in someone like htc cobbling something together to ship an 'android 3' part.

As google knows android 3 just isn't ready for smartphones, having been designed around tablets only, they know this will damage the android brand.

The only way to ensure it only gets put on tablets for the time being is to keep the source back and only release it to partners who have signed up and agreed to not put it on a phone.

They should wait until they've ironed out all the bugs with operating two vastly different form factors but the market is slipping away from them. Businesses sometimes have to make compromises to hit market.

Windows?

Users are the problem, they shouldn't be trusted to run their own internet connections and ISPs should have a legal responsibility to prevent crap spewing from their connections.

Auditor to Oz PM&C: Don’t use Webmail for leaks

dave 46

unnecessary title

To be fair it's more secure than using just about any desktop mail client, assuming you allow it to be used on anything other than heavily locked down it controlled desktops.

In reality it needs to be accessed from many more locations and devices than IT could ever provide support and assure security for, so yeah, webmail is okay. I'd add 2-factor security for unknown / new login locations but that's all (needn't be too onerous, sms would do).

That's my point, I know he isn't lieing, I absoilutely know it's objective fact but the amount of spin he puts inbetween the facts makes me instincitvely doubt anything he says.

Quite a talent right there.

Sugar coating it isn't the answer the negative scare mongering. It just makes people believe the scare mongerers more.

dave 46

Amazing

I support nuclear power, I believe fission is the future of power generation for the forseeable future and I know there are modern designs which are inherently safe and don't need cooling pumps running constantly to prevent disaster.

But this article has so much positive spin and sugar coating even I think I'm being lied to. Maybe Lewis is training for a career in politics.

Stop

tax

Fix their end is move to Jersey to avoid paying tax.

The net effect is a cost to you. If the government weren't allowing this tax loop hole (which is also only economicly viable due to royal mail being required to deliver things for pennies from CI) then dvd warehouses would be in normal distribution centres like warrington, rochdale or burnley.

The costs fo running these warehouses are lower, so except for tax you would (could) pay less.

The profits from these warehouse operators and wages for all the staff would be subject to UK tax and the wages of the workers would go to local shops and businesses rather than ones in Jersey.

Don't forget also, the government aren't a business, if they need x pounds in tax they will just tax it elsewhere. So losing all this tax revenue just means you pay more some place else (it may even be secondary - maybe higher business rates cause your mocha frapuchino to cost 5p more tomorrow).

saving 40p off your next dvd really isn't worth it in the bigger picture.

UK cyclists hit by fraud after online purchase at website

Probably didn't use it on the web

It's still far more likely to get a card skimmed paying for petrol or a curry.

Doesn't hurt to be careful where you're shopping online though, and if you're not sure use an option like paypal.

Either there are nefarious back-room deals and bribery afoot or Chrome is actually pretty damned secure.

Sage Pay suffers 2nd day of downtime

dave 46

Protx

Protx were so bad they implemented 3d-secure years after the rest of the payment industry when mastercard finally mandated it.

They then screwed it up.

I suspect it's either lack of investment or a platform which is so badly designed (and documented) they don't dare touch anything lest it blow up in their faces.

In 5 years and 20k transactions a month we've had one failure with our processor (secure trading) and that was down to our firewalls blocking updates. They aren't all the same.

Apple T&C upsets philanthropic developers

dave 46

It's a free world

Apple is free to tell do gooders to do one, just as they could tell them to do one unless it's a charity that matches our corporate profile.

On top of that I'm sure Apple has terms in the app store already for rejecting apps that incite hatred, charitable status or not.

Everything turns full circle eventually and I think we're back to the point where some at Apple will be wondering if Jobs is fit for purpose again.

dave 46
FAIL

Apple PR fails again

It is an issue, it can be fraudulent - so they just stomp on it with their size 12's and piss everybody off.

If they'd taken a little time they could easily have setup a gifting system where 100% of the fee could have gone to a nominated charity.

Yes it would take a little bit of management from Apple, yes it would take a little bit of coding to tweak the app store.

But it would be a PR win and Apple aren't getting many of those these days. Are good products enough to sustain their corporate image in the wake of so mane gaffes?

UK extends IT spending controls

dave 46

Won't work

They'll just split a big project into 5 little projects, all under the 5m threshold.

I can't see any of the civil service mandarins being happy having to justify their spending, or able to for that matter.

Tainted apps worm into official Android store

dave 46

Trust is given way too easily

I don't trust apple or google to vet app store programs properly. There are too many, there's no money in it, and it's too difficult.

I'd pay more for apps in a store that I *knew* were subject to vigerous quality control (no crashing, no dodgy behaviour, no incomplete features). I've been dissapointed with the quality of apps on both platforms so I certainly don't buy into apples vetting procedures anymore (they seem more concerned about protecting apples and the carriers markets than ensuring I get a quality product).

ECJ gender ruling 'could throw insurance into turmoil'

dave 46

It seems obvious but is government in bed with insurance firms?

Pay 3rd party insurance claims from general taxation, increase fuel duty to pay for it.

Those who drive further / faster / urban driving / big cars will pay more towards the cost of insurance, this is reasonable as they are a greater risk.

Those who drive very little will pay less. It will also be a green policy as it makes public transport more afforable (the car isn't costing you as much if you're not driving it).

The only reason I can think of for it not happening is the special interests of insurance companies who would be severely disadvantaged by only offering comprehensive cover in future.

Midnight theft left Vodafone users bereft

dave 46

Nothing new

Everything gets cheaper, the only thing we care about is how much we get nobody ever stops to question the quality, what backup is there, what resilience.

I don't imagine any other carrier is any different.

They may review their security procedures but that is it - nobody really cares and everybody will have forgotten about this when the contract comes round again, they'll care more about which network has the shiniest phone and the biggest data package / most texts.

Windows Phone 7 gets 'goodie' update

dave 46
WTF?

haters

Why does anything to do with MS, Apple, Google cause so much hate? You don't get this with an article about some new HP kit or a SAP update.

Read some of the above comments, it's foaming at the mouth nuttyness.

I updated my old hero over the air (wifi for speed) and I recently updated my (work) iPhone with iTunes because I had to use it for putting copilot on and it prompted me to. Neither option caused me to rage around the building for half an hour.

"Not to mention problems with mobile stolen phones, or if you've given your landline number, house mates trying to get into your account knowing they have access to the phone number you've given google"

2-factor means 2 methods of identification - in this case you know the password and have the phone. If you don't know know the password having the phone won't help (but probably make is much easier to get it reset - but that's no different to your bank account).

Because Virgin don't want to

Doing so would (like BT) require them to open up their network to compeition. It serves them better to be able to exploit their existing advantage to try and pay back the stupendous loans it took to create.

Maybe if the government offered to pay off their debt they'd see an upside, but as that's over £5b I don't see it happening.

Remember BT got it's network paid for by the state, they've upgraded for sure, but the really crippling work was handed to them for a song.

iOS upgrade cocks up iPad USB connections

dave 46

Unbelievable

This is a stupid decision that harms customers or at the very least does nothing - it is not an improvement for anybody.

It could only effect battery life if you were plugging something in that used more than 20ma, a choice you now don't have.

Anybody that can defend the move clearly does not understand.

I hope it's just an almighty cockup and not some attempt to limit the use of devices (oh you need an air for that sir).

iPhone alarm bug: now it's the UK's turn

Mine was an hour late on sunday - thankfully my android woke me up :)

But today was fine, I did select different alarms last night though as I had to get up earlier on Sunday than today (sucks don't it), maybe it only updates the internal 'real time' when the alarm is set.

As such to fix, untick alarm, retick alarm - job done!

Very niche, perhaps if you only had a 256GB SSD in your system, no large data drive (unusual in itself) and wanted to backup as quickly as possible (how long would it take to backup < 256GB on a normal hard drive anyway?).

I'm sure most of the benefit of the SSD will be scrubbed off by the USB3 anyway (and god help you if you have USB2, like most of us).
