Hey girl, what's that behind your Windows task bar? Looks like a hidden crypto-miner...

nikos

why bother hiding under the taskbar and not just send the window outside the monitor?

Leaky-by-design location services show outsourced security won't ever work

geotags embedded in pictures are not all doom and gloom. There are programs like DeskRule that allow you to find pictures shot at a particular part of the world, which is handy if you are trying to find that picture in Tanzania you shot back in 2007 :)

not so long paths

Windows 10 version 1607 and later did next to nothing for long paths in real applications, and especially so for the shell. One less thing to worry about

Google and the End of Science

Boffin

another armchair philosopher

throughout history real progress has been hampered by influential thinkers (eg aristotle) who basically had no clue about the scientific method and did more harm than good

this latest "revelation" is from a guy that clearly has no clue about mathematics and modelling. With loads of data you can at best do black box models. Try using one of those to predict tomorrow's weather, never mind understand what's going on. Their extrapolation capacity is next to zero too.

we're quite safe from google just yet!

Thumb Down

have you noticed FPSE is gone too?

silently during the recent server "upgrade" 1&1 removed Frontpage Extensions from linux servers "for compatibility issues", and screwed up my webdav (webfolder) access to the website

their advise was to switch back to FTP, my advise is to switch to another provider...

i don't know what technology these swipe-happy cards like oyster use, but as i've got 2-3 already in my pocket, they go snafu all the time, obviously they don't like being in close contact with other similar cards. I've changed my oyster 3 times this year. How amusing will it be having to change your bankcard every other month too!

ahoy all pricks!

you know who you are, the van/lorry driver or supercar short dong kiddie, all too hurried in your "important" job to stop for obstacles like cyclists

hello, dickhead, just because i'm a cyclist, doesn't mean i'll move to the side, so stick your horn up your stoopid working class arse! If you want to overtake that's your problem, not mine. And yes, i will drive in the middle of the road when i have to do a right turn 100m down the road, see?

feeling like judge dredd perhaps, judge and executioner? just think how much time you'll be scrubbing my blood off your windscreen, and all the nightmares! This is the real life jack, not PS2. Save yourself the psychotherapist money and stay clear!

AVG cries wolf at Adobe Reader

not the first AVG cock up

last month they screwd me up as well as a bunch of other shareware authors with yet another faulty virus signature upgrade of theirs. I had to fend off an angry mob of users that had to take sides (me vs the lions -- sorry AVG):

http://netez.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=5275

to their credit, they were quick to fix their cockup.

Sun's activity not to blame for climate change

nikos

look outside the window

not that warm, is it, this summer?

the earth has been changing its climate up and down over millenia. Now the boffins tell us that CO2 levels are at unprecedented levels, if we grant them that they know how to drill ice and measure old atmospheric data. (When I was in college these kind of dull measurement works were given to lab monkeys, technicians with little wit or motivation to do the job properly)

but let's say that it's true that we are choked with CO2. Then what? we're like Venus? Hardly! If this is indeed uncharted territory, then science has little to say. Models and simulations can interpolate, never extrapolate. Induction as used by hot weather cassandras is outside its remit.

we're too insignificant to amount to much on this planet

signing off,

DrinkorDie warez leader jailed for 51 months

string them high!

as a small software (shareware) vendor I am exceedingly happy to see such a paradigmatic cracker sentence, that should set an example to the rest of the warez "community"

although this particular cracker (alledgedly) did not profit from the copyright infringement, nowadays cracks are big business, charging memberships and whatnot. It isn't just a sport any more

next step we need some crucifixion of a chinese cracker, that's the hot spot nowadays.

No end in sight for Vista's Long Goodbye

nikos

more weirdness

talking about weird bugs in vista, some people have been experiencing funny beeps when using programs with listview controls, like the one used in explorer to show files. It's maddening, since whenever you move the cursor or select an item you get a sound. I have seen many people moaning about it but no solution yet

About that TV service, Mr Branson...

nikos

spot on!

ever since virgin took over from telewest, the cable tv feed went $#!+e. When it doesn't crash outright, the pic is full of gaps, sound blackouts and assorted bugs

what did they do, change the OS on the box with windows?

i say bring in Stelios, he'll sort virgin out, easy!
