RIM opens its PlayBook – tablets clearly set for dominance

Replace PC's?

Can the iPad print to a regular printer? Does Adobe Photoshop run on any tablet? Does any tablet recognize and install drivers for any M-Audio audio interface devices? Does any tablet run Pro-Tools? Until someone produces a Tablet that is compatible with my content creation and recording studio software, no tablet will be replacing my desktop PC. My Desktop PC does everything I need it to do and then some, because I built it to my specifications and to serve my needs. Apparently, I cannot built myself a tablet, because if I could, it wouldn't be running any cell phone operating system or Android, and it would at least have laptop hardware. The tablet is not some all encompessing computing solution for everyone. Those who need less and want to impress others with their toy, will find a tablet more compelling than those of us who need a real computer to do content creation (not just content consumption).

I can see a tablet as an addition to my mobile computing environment, but I don't see a tablet replacing my laptop or desktop unless it can run my desktop apps and perform my desktop functions without compromise. For me, a hobbled, cute little tablet running iPhone OS and apps with no connectivity, expansion, camera, or security options, is useless. I will however admit that the Blackberry Playbook is a compelling product, given that is more securre and capable of doing more than "content consumption". I will be closely watching it's development. If the price is right and there are apps that I actually use available for it, I'll have to consider it, but the iPad is just a toy to me. I'm not willing to allow Apple to dictate my computing needs and then overcharge me for a hobbled, cute product.

Solar collector

Someone already said this, but you'd think that a big high end hotel who knows that have a problem that's a potential liability nightmare, would come up with a way to harness that solar energy with a solar collector of some sort. Epic fail on the part of the architect.

Most smartphoners don't give a flip about apps

Gil Grissum
Grenade

Hmmm?

I seriously doubt that anyone buys a smartphone just to make phone calls. Smartphone buyers buy smartphones for the apps. It's doubtful that there were any iPhone users included in this survey. It would be totally pointless to own an iPhone just to make phone calls. Perhaps the first iPhone version buyers didn't care as much about apps because there weren't any. If they mixed in dumb phone users with smart phone users in this survey, then the data is flawed.

Switcheroo

When the next iPhone pops up with GSM/LTE/CDMA chippery under the hood, there won't be a reason to stick with AT&T. Verizon is looking really good for alot of people to switch to. I don't know a lot of people who are in love with AT&T's network performance.

Oracle sues Google over Java in Android

Great

So now we know why Oracle really bought Sun.

What next? They sue everyone else claiming any implementation of Linux violates SUN Unix intellectual property? Same lawyer as SCO? Should be obvious what will happen. Oracle's days are numbered. Doesn't Google have more money than them anyway? Find a work around or pay them to go away and STFU so the rest of us can get back to waiting on FLASH to show up on our Android and Palm Pre handsets.

'Death to browsers!' cries Apple mobile-app patent

Use your iPhone to control what on a plane?

You think after 911, the government is going to allow anyone to control anything on commercial airline with an iPhone? Not to be a tad pessimistic, but don't you think iPhone carrying terrorists could have a field day with this sort of thing? It's never going to happen. Apple must be getting desperate. It's bad enough that their iPhone in America is limited to one hobbled carrier (AT&T) thereby guarantying that Android use outgrows it (all other carriers in the US sell Android). It's another thing entirely to attempt to patent functions that have prior art in use within a web browser. Someone at the patent office must be awake, hopefully?

Bullocks

At the very least, Apple should just publicly admit the design flaws and give away the damned rubber bumper as opposed to selling it to customers to correct an issue with a clearly and obviously faulty product. At the most, Apple should publicly admit to the product faults and issue a full recall. Slight of hand trickery isn't fooling the majority of the public on these design flaws. That quite simply is what they are. Design flaws. Customers shouldn't have to seek their own solutions to fix product design flaws. The company that made the products needs to deal with it, admit the faults, and fix the problem.

Only one Fanboy responded??

So only one Fanboy who's "magic toy" just "magically works", responded to this? I suppose there aren't any excuses that can be made when CONSUMER REPORTS changed their rating of the iPhone and actually came out and said what we all know- that it is a DESIGN FLAW, not "held wrong", not "Software glitch making the signal bars appear improper", or that there is "light coming through your ears" to mess with the sensor. THE POS PHONE HAS A DESIGN FLAW. Apple should in fact FIX IT FOR FREE at worst or at the very least, GIVE ALL OF THEIR i Phone 4 customers a free rubber bumper case. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

SCO rises from the dead (again)

Gil Grissum

It's the lawyers......

The only reason SCO hasn't been buried dead and gone is the lawyers. It doesn't matter if SCO wins or not. The lawyers bill their hours and are paid for it anyway. No lawyer would take SCOs case for free. So it has to be the lawyers. There is no reason to appeal this decision. The first appeal resulted in the same thing- THEY LOST. A new appeal isn't in the best interest of the tax payers or the court system. Some judge needs to just say last rights over the damn thing and end it now. Someone pull the pin now please?

Apple reckons light shines between iPhone customers' ears

Still not impressed

Apple hasn't impressed me with any version of the iPhone yet. I'm not easily impressed by technology with an Apple Logo. I need technology that meets my needs. I'm not going to pay more money for technolgy that lacks functionality that I need. You may be willing to pay more for less. I am not.

I'm even less impressed with how Apple treats customers - "You're holding it wrong"? It has a clear design flaw that can be avoided by PURCHASING a rubber bumper? Apple should be handing out those rubber bumpers.

Enjoy your iPhone. Enjoy monitoring your data, since you can't get unlimited data any more. I have unlimited data on my Palm Pre Plus. SHRUG.

Jobs tells iPhone users to get a grip

Gil Grissum
WTF?

"You're holding the phone wrong"

WFT?? We designed a flaw into the phone that we somehow missed during testing but it is YOUR fault for holding the phone wrong because WE put the antanea in the steel band OUTSIDE of the phone which you were SURELY bound to touch while holding it? Give me a break!! Anyone who accepts this blame game is surely an idiot. I'm holding my Palm Pre Plus right now and despite changing the way I hold it multiple times in both hands, it's not dropping any bars and the signal is fine. So YES Steve it is a design flaw that YOU cannot cover by claiming that your fanboi flock is "holding the phone the wrong way".

Android will win

The naysayers who are pooing on Android can have the iPhone. I'm never going to buy a closed platform Phone that restricts my choices on apps, limits where I can buy them from, and prevents me from having a "killer app" out of fear that it could be cross platform, ultimately dropped from the iPhone at some point, or that it could run better on another platform. iPhone had the market to itself until Android arrived. More important than all of this is the fact that new iPhone customers (= NON FANBOIS) will not get unlimited data plans because AT&T has done away with them. So the killer feature (unlimited data) that makes the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, worth having to deal with AT&T's service, is gone. Everyone else intends to maintain unlimited data plans. Guess what that means? iPhone/data cap, Android, unlimited data. You may not think that Android 2.2 doing Flash natively means anything, but we will see.

Windows iPhone 7

Unless you're government, what kind of businesses provides all of their employees with Smartphones? What justifies that kind of expense in today's world? Laptops for sales or presentations to certain key employees, sure, but even all the way down to Admin Assistants, you're buying everyone phones?

With that being said, I'll be avoiding WP7, as my workplace (a school of medicine) doesn't buy anyone's cell phone and if I wanted an iPhone, I'd buy an iPhone. I can't defend Microsoft on this one. They basically have copied the iPhone approach to an app store, no native apps, remote wipe, and probably most of the touch screen interface. It's sad to see that they can't come up with anything innovative on their own. Apple will be just laughing at them while their lawyers sue the pants off Microsoft. What a joke. Yea, I'll be sticking with my Blackberry for a while....

Keep believing that.....

Sure. Stay in denial. The iPhone did fine without competition. Let's see if it can continue to trick the stupid fashion conscious wannabees for very much longer. Apple with no competition is one thing, while Apple with competition is becoming something quite different. We've already seen this movie before and back then, Apple almost destroyed itself. It's only a matter of time and time is something that simply isn't on Apple's side because now it has competition. Better hope RIM doesn't pull it's head out of the sand too because then Apple will be fighting more than just Android. Apple's only real hope is to negotiate deals with other vendors because AT&T doesn't impress everyone in the US.

HP keeps Palm alive and gets a Web OS based Smartphone onto AT&T's network (PRE PLUS or better), I will move on to an HP/Palm Web OS Smartphone at my next upgrade cycle, next February. The only reason I don't have a Palm PRE is because I'm on AT&T and they don't have the PRE PLUS but it ever shows up and that's it for the BB.

A multitasking iPad? Let's bin the netbook

Gil Grissum
Grenade

Not for me

I don't have an iPhone for similar reasons that I won't be having a first generation iPad. I need devices that don't lack functions I need. I'm not into "making due" with a device that has a pretty shell and nice user experience in exchange for technology and capabilities that I need. If the iPad had a full version of OSX, USB port, and a camera at the same price, I'd be sold on it, but simply making a big screen iPod touch and calling it a revolutionary product that allegedly out does a netbook is more than mis-direction, it's a blatant lie. And before anyone chimes in that I "don't get it" and that the "iPad isn't meant to replace a laptop", for me, that's what it would have to do in order for me to need one like I need my laptop and my black berry. If a device doesn't do what I need, I don't buy it. Simple as that. Would definitely take one if someone gave it to me, but I'm not going to spend money on something that doesn't meet my needs. if it meets yours, I applaud you, but I need more from my devices than the average Apple user.

Office IT: One size doesn't fit all?

Gil Grissum
Pint

Lock down

Having done IT Support for many years, I am definitely in favor of a standard configuration of standard limited models supported. Makes things easier on the IT Department from a support point of view. As far as the end users needs are concerned, the business owns the equipment and the user works for the business, so the business dictates what the users does their job with, not the user's ideas about what they think they need. The business management meets with the IT management to discuss and agree on giving the user technology that meets their requirements within the framework of the standard configurations. Unfortunately, Windows XP (as used where I work) has to be set up to allow the user admin rights, otherwise merely being able to access and use MS Office programs and the like, would be impossible, so the locked down profiles of the past (Windows NT) aren't possible any more.

Users often forget that they work at the mercy of the business and don't get to dictate what they want or think they need on the job. In this economy, there is no need to waste an exorbitant amount of money on kit when the job can be done with a basic desktop with MS Office, network printing and Internet access. Unless you are rendering video, producing music, or designing aircraft, there is no cause for any sort of high end machine for the average office worker. Yea, I'd like an Alienware laptop too, but there is no business justification for such a thing.
