Moron... the triumph of OSX was that it`s a GUI they built on top of BSD UNIX.
Apple didn`t even CREATE the core of their `triumphant`OS...
And now they have the gull to gloat over winning over a billion dollars because they patented... a Rectangle with rounded corners...
This entire thing is beyond retarded...
Nokia is now one in a long long LOOOOOOONG list of companies who have "partnered" with Microsoft only to go down in flames because of it. Maybe it's not too late for them... maybe... But it will take many many years for them to come back from the MS partnership.
They were doomed the minute they hired a Microsoft exec as their head honcho.
You can argue the quality of the Ms product into the ground... it doesn't matter. History doesn't lie.
"People" could not care less weather or not it's a great phone that does everything perfectly.
Fact is... the Microsoft phone doesn't do one single thing... NOT ONE... that all other phones also do just as well, or better.
Some phone actually DO some things much better than the Microsoft phone does.
The Microsoft phone has some very SERIOUS issues with battery, web browsing, data disconnection etc... and that will scare people away.
The current phones will NOT be supported on the next version of Windows phone, therefore in 2 years time, that shiny new Lumia of yours will be as useful as a paper weight.
And last but FAR from least... Microsoft is a very VERY HATED convicted monopoly abusing marketing company that FINALLY... users have an alternative for that was there first, and is better... why in hell would ANYONE in that right mind EVER WANT a Windows phone??? It's a piece of JUNK.
Have a nice day.
(I assume as usual, this comment will be voted to oblivion within the hour... let that rug-burn begin)
Microsoft did not have an OS capable of taking advantage of tablets.
Windows tablets were PC's with Windows XP and a touch screen to use your finger as a mouse... So much for "pioneering"...
As usual... Microsoft couldn't see the possibilities and actually innovate for real.
THAT is why they failed with the tablet.
First, Microsoft's dominance and subsequent abuse of it should be considered one of the, or the worse thing that's ever happened to the IT industry by orders of magnitude.
Second... no, people at large, especially people in a corporate environment, are definitely NOT ready or even willing to switch over to an entirely new way to work and do NOT want to switch to using a touch screen... that makes no sense at all.
Third, in order for their "strategy" to work and have all Windows devices use the same interface, they would have to sell a couple copies of the device that this interface is mainly designed for... the phone. And selling about 1.8% of market share isn't remotely close to getting them anywhere.
Windows 8, and it's Metro interface is a giant step backwards. It's a ugly, clunky waste of space on a screen larger than 4". The menus are missing, it takes more time and effort to do anything And it has more limitations and LESS features.
It's a giant steaming pile of dung, and I don't understand what all the OS's have with this fetish obsession with touch screens. Ubuntu, Gnome, Windows... everyone is falling into the same latrine pit...
A phone is not a PC... a PC is NOT a phone. They are used for different things and forcing backwards changes down people's throats is a very quick way to make them look to see if other alternatives taste better.
Seriously!
The Earth's population is increasing.
It is increasing in regions where for some reason, humans are poorer.
In order to come out of poverty and feed themselves, populations need to spend MORE energy.
The ONLY way we have of producing energy right now, and for the foreseeable future, causes what alarmists call...evil poisonous greenhouse gases.
NOBODY ON THIS PLANET WILL EVER BE ABLE TO CONVINCE THESE FOLKS THAT DYING OF HUNGER OR FREEZING TO DEATH IS BETTER THAN THE EARTH GETTING A BIT WARMER.
You give them a choice between a dying polar bear, and dying themselves... they will pick the bear every single time...
What I'm saying here is... Weather on not MAN is responsible for some of the Earth's warming is completely moot unless you propose a REALISTIC way of coping with that "problem".
And so far I have not heard of a practical, realistic, applicable REAL solution to this "problem" proposed by ANYONE that would not kill off a % of the population and send the rest back to the freakin'stone age.
THAT is your problem right there! NOT the skeptics, NOT the oil companies, NOT the Chinese...
You find a PRACTICLE solution... people WILL be willing to apply it.
You ask for people to make MASSIVE changes and EXTREME sacrifices... you BETTER freakin have PROOF that they themselves are going to DIE. Proof beyond computer models that cant even go back in time a few years with any accuracy, beyond petty, lying, self aggrandising, egomaniacal "scientists", beyond theoretical studies.... PROOF.
(Glaciers have been retreating for 10000 years... they are not proof)
At this moment... you have NO proof... you have what you call "overwhelming" evidence... NOT ENOUGH.
And it all doesn't matter.
Working on a problem is useless unless you have a solution.
You have not proven that there is a problem, you are just pretty sure there is one... and you have NO solution... NONE.
The problem I have with this argument...is that I do not know ONE single skeptic who does not want clean air, less waste, less pollution, a better world and puppies...
It's something that really pisses me off whenever the subject comes up, because to alarmists, the moment you imply that there's a hint of a possibility of the theory not becoming true, or not being as bad as some say... you have been paid for by big oil companies and you want the earth to turn into a big smouldering ruined chunk of oily space junk....
THAT... is simply not true.
I AM all for reducing pollution, oil consumption and energy waste. I AM ALL FOR eliminating pollution as much as possible... I do NOT believe that burning fossil fule is the best long term solution for mankind...
But at the SAME time... I HAVE some doubts about how right models that cannot work backwards in time can be about the future. I have VERY reasonable doubts about the integrity of very influential climate change "scientists", and I am not convinced that AGW will be as bad or have as bad consequences as the alarmists claim.
And I do not see any kind of problem with my personal beliefs, and I KNOW for a FACT that a very significant number of people think just like I do... yet... we basically get sh1t on by warmists every time we say anything...
I know right! Jones himself said earlier this year that there had not been any statistically significant warming since 1998. The most prominent climate scientist on the planet says... it's stopped for now.
That barely made the news.
Yet if you listen to all the media reports, the Earth is about to start boiling and every little natural event is immediately blamed on gasoline. I even saw an article yesterday claiming that even earthquakes and volcano eruptions should be blamed on Global Warming. Seriously!?
I mean... come on!... There's probably more money being poured into trying to prove Global Warming and linking it to every single possible event than there is in trying to find alternate sources of energy! How about they take the billions of dollars spent on spewing their bovine excrements, and spend it on actual things like.. alternate fuels, algae biodiesel, "safe" nuke (if al all possible) etc etc etc.
You know... for a "settled science", with incontrovertible and overwhelming evidence, there's still a surprisingly high number of people trying to prove it's real instead of finding practical solution that do not force man back into the stone ages.
Ever heard of Peter and the Wolfe, anyone?
After decades of piss poor OS performance, absent security, gouging prices, crappy support, monopoly abuse, marketplace bullying and killing any progress deemed as a possible threat... why in hell would ANYONE support Microsoft and purchase one of their phones???
As long as there is any viable option on the market... Microsoft will get the middle finger salute from most people, simply out of principal...
Except the Music Industry's cut is more like 75% and 100% of the costs of everything come out of the Artists 25%. The music industry takes 0% risk, charge the artist for 100% of their services, and then take 75% off the top... This doesn't even come CLOSE to screwing the author as bad the the standard music industry contract. It doesn't even compare.
Now that it's out... just don't use the tool... that's all.
"To accept that a functionality of a computer program can be protected as such would amount to making it possible to monopolise ideas, to the detriment of technological progress and industrial development,"
And besides... monopolysing ideas expressed in a computer program are what Patents are for...
HAHAHA.... how people forget their history... or ignore it.
MS has not beaten anyone, to anything, in any area, ever... EXCEPT to a partnership with OEMs in the mid/late 80's, which allowed them to gain a dominant position, which they subsequently abused to kill off any competition... that's a fact...proven IN COURT.
Microsoft doesn't have ONE single product that they invented themselves.
Their problem with the tablet is that as someone else posted, there is no tablet market... there's only an iPad market.
The problem here is that in order to get into the tablet market, Microsoft will have to come up with some innovations of their own. And that would certainly be a first for them.
The bar for quality, stability, ease of use and overall functionality has been set pretty high by Apple. If all Microsoft can do is come close to that... they've already failed. Just like the problem with Google+ was that everyone was already on facebook, the problem with a Windows tablet is going to be that... well it's okay but it's not an iPad.
In order to succeed, Microsoft will have to do to the iPad, what Apple did to the tablet PC. And personally, I do not believe Microsoft is capable of such a leap. They do not have to company culture.
The truth is corporate interests have their eyes yet on monetizing the Internet but putting virtual toll booths everywhere they can. In their minds, they already own it and you're going to pay for it.
So they'll keep trying, again and again, as long as it takes and eventually the WILL get what they want. That's just how it is... they'll try again next year, and the next. Will have someone add it to the back pages of some needed bill, or will pay enough people off... but they'll get it.
It's inevitable.
Learn how the business works before stating stupidities.
Labels take NO risk!
Artists get 10% of record sales.
Printing, touring, equipment, studio, engineers, producers, shipping, breakage and returns, promo costs.. ALL COME OUT OF THAT 10%.
The label pays for nothing.
The ONLY "chance" the labels take is on advancing money to the artists so that they can pay for all of the above. The advance is almost NEVER recouped by the artist with the first record, which is what the labels use to pressure the artists into selling out on their second album (you own us xxx$ and we want it back so now you do it our way).
Labels are the scum of the earth and no better than two bit loan sharks.
Why would Google spend billions on patents to defend itself in a copyright case???
Obviously, this is NOT why they did it, but for some reason, this article is written as if it was the ONLY legal battle Google has on it's hand...
At the moment, patents are the single most destructive force in the universe and a company without patents is like a marine without his gun.
Apple has chosen to sue everyone BUT Google over the patents in Android and so far Google had to stay out of the fight for lack of weapons and let it's clients fend for themselves. But NOW... finally Google can step in and put on pressure of it's own so that Apple and M$ leave Android alone.
Oracle... well that's a completely separate mess.
Software patents must die.
And myopic journalists must stop writing.
They said that last time there was a disruption for over a week and an all out outage for 3 days.
We received a credit for 3 days of that month's invoice and nothing else.
This time around, it'll probably be 25% credit on the 2 days of the months the service was out...
Pennies....
Microsoft likes to play on words.
fkers
I did read it... and this part "In sum, the cloud isn't shrinking the IT department. Rather, the cloud is changing IT, forcing it to offer higher value." prompted my comment.
Front what I've seen so far... the cloud hasn't actually done anything yet to "the IT department" in general.
You speak as if all that's been migrated to "the cloud" has had a great effect on IT.
The fact is... the cloud has not been adopted enough to have a real significant impact on IT in general, especially at the SMB level...
As usual, your "cloud" article is just hype.
I hope you guys get paied well to hype it so much.
4 examples is thorough to you?
And saving costs?? Where does that come from?
100 users on BPOS will run you about 700$/month in cost. And that's ONLY for email.
That's 8400/year.
Over three years, you will have paid over 25000$ for your email services.
You can EASILY get proper licensing and a good box to host it yourself for that price.
Where are those savings you speak of?
And that's ignoring the hassle of BPOS downtime, missing features, "tech support" that barely speaks english etc etc...
In the future... ALL infrastructure will be in the cloud?
You mean like, in the future, everybody will choose to rent space for their data, rent their applications, rent their processing power, rent their terminal servers and rent the pipe they'll use to access all of it. All at a cost higher than actually purchasing and owning their servers and data.
And everyone will be happy, when they have a problem, to call half way around the world and speak at someone with an accent so think communication is almost impossible, and who can't get a grasp of what your problem actually is?
Really?
Cause right now I'm having to deal with only one of my applications being hosted "in the cloud"... and I'm seriously considering quitting because I just can't take this cr@p anymore.
I cant imagine the entire IT world doing that.
Beyond the stupid AGW vs No-AGW argumentation that almost everyone seems to be so hung up about. The REAL problem is that despite what AGW people claim about warming being the end of the world as we know it, in reality a slight amount of warming isn't actually a bad thing... but a slight amount of cooling can have immediate catastrophic consequences.
Diminished crops, surplus energy demands, entire seasons ruined by early or late frosts etc etc... The food supply being what it is, even a few degrees of cooling can spell world hunger, raising food prices and heating crisis all over the world... THAT is a real problem.
MUCH worse that a few degrees of warming.
When installing and configuring a UPS monitoring system that will automatically and gracefully shut down your data center in proper order before the batteries run out, always make sure you keep track of the serial cable that came WITH said UPS.
I once installed one of those for a medium size ISP and got my hands on the wrong cable. It did not take me long to realize that on a regular cable, pin 5 is grounded, and on a UPS, pin 5 to ground means emergency shut-off... The sound of a big UPS, 25+ servers and a plethora of telecom equipment all clicking off simultaneously is not one that I ever want to hear again...
Best of all... RTFM.
