Holographic storage kingpin turns staff and product into an illusion

Joe K
Stop

Utterly obsolete

You can get bigger hard drives that that, for less money each.

Sure its a bit more of a hassle to shuffle a drive into a USB enclosure, but its gonna save you about $18000, and thats before media costs. Or you can just get network RAID arrays now.

I just can't see the point of these discs at all now.

Mathematical bollocks

I don't need "data" and "studies" to tell me they haven't a fuckin clue.

On sunday morning all weather sources i checked said we were in for a fine sunny day, it pissed down all afternoon.

If they can't predict the same days weather, i'm not too bothered about all this crystal ball gazing.

Meanwhile, the glaciers retreat and ski resorts close down by the hundreds. Now thats data.

Laptop market is f**ked

Who needs a overpowered, Vista-riddled, 1hr battery life low-quality laptop for 300-500 quid when you can have one of these lovelies for two ton or so.

I dont need a mobile DVD writer and f**king dual cores, i just want a little thing to throw in a bag in case i need it while out and about.

These companies are gonna make out like bandits.

Nope, i hate peas too.

Joe K

Its PAEDO-GEDDON!

Doesn't the sex offenders register cover this?

Or is this just a "lets put everyone in and rate them on the nonce-o-meter" database?

If so most of us are fucked. As a single IT worker in my 30's i'm sure some algorithm would rate me high up the Glitter-pole and not let me near a school if its network needs an admin.

Lucky i hate kids then.

What former AOL moron thought this one up, probably someone who still thinks that the average webpage is under 100k, and that movie/game/demo downloads are still a pipe dream.

That disasterous AOL merger must have cost them big to attempt to claw back revenue with this abortion of an idea.

We should call them either sub-notebooks (even though they're still bigger than most actual paper notebooks), or UMPC, as they are indeed Ultra.

This is what you get from Outsourcing, even to UK outsource companies

You get what you pay for. Cheap=shit.

How on earth could anyone but the *very* few Enterprise Admins, who should have the knowledge of God himself, be able to do such a thing.

And where was the backup and emergency plans and procedures. Probably lost in the mess of outsourced dept muppets, contacting outsourced support desks, who refer them to "my mentor", who ask them to log a support ticket before they'll lift a finger.

Its bloody terrifying.

Reg readers split on Vista readiness

Joe K
Flame

Umm, no.

The problem with Vista isn't technical, its the muppets who have to use it.

The training requirements are *HUGE*. The admins and tech guys can handle the change.

The users, who panic at the sight of a new wallpaper, cannot. Neither can the service desk people who are the first port of call for the slightest issue.

At least not without massive amounts of money spent of training, and a lot of hands-on experience.

This is why we're not ready for Vista, not when XP works so well and is so embedded in our enterprises.

Give us that, again, and they'll fly off the shelves like the first Asus is continuing to do.

Sony OLED TV longevity claim challenged

Joe K

Nothing new

On all my old CRT's i remember having to increase the brightness up year by year as the tube gets old.

I've noticed the same with my LCD over the past 3 years, started off on 23% brightness, now up to 35%.

Hopefully these OLEDs have variable brightness (no backlights, so i'm not sure) so you can just boost things as they degrade.

HP in talks to buy EDS

Joe K
Thumb Up

Hope it goes through

EDS are the pus ridded boil on the arse of outsourcing, would be good to see them and their millions of incompentent managers get the boot, and whatever workers remain get treated better than the poor sods do at their hands.

Thing is, what happens to that $13bn paid for them? If it goes into EDS, and they get absorbed by HP, doesn't that mean they get their money back?

The alternative is that the $13bn gets divided up among the bigwigs and fatcat who cash out like bandits, the idea of which leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.

MSI releases £235 desktop Eee PC rival ahead of Asus

"I'm interested if people have got video working well under 802.11g."

Using TVersity i can regularly stream ANY 1080p or 720p format video from my main pc(via attached terabyte USB drive) via Wifi to my PS3, onto the hi-def telly, its perfect quality.

Of course i could save time and just plug the drive into the PS3, but then the movies need to be in certain formats. TVersity transcodes the buggers in realtime, though thats beyond the 2ghz ability of this MSI thing.

My dualcore (2.6ghz per core) goes up to about 80-90% during realtime transcoding of mkv's to PS3 format.

Still works though, and also plays GTA4!

And the general consensus, including from the Rockstar co-founder too (http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=3&cId=3167500#two-consoles), is that the PS3 has a warmer, softer feel than the Xbox's more clinical look.

But its all pointless tech willy-waving from fanboys looking at still screenshots. There is very little difference at ALL when you play the thing, something that lots of comparison videos already show.

Same goes for the thousands of VHS cassettes still sold to "thrifty" types in car boot sales.

And within a year of DVD appearing we all had 30 discs each? Piss off, i don't even have 30 DVD (err, legit ones anyway) now.
