Goes against every other netbook/Windows 7 experience

Why did you try to make a general point about Windows 7? Are you paid by PC manufacturers to burst the netbook bubble so people start buying more expensive machines? Or worse still, Apple or Google? If Windows 7 Starter Edition sucks on this then blame it on either the Starter Edition or Lenovo. Look on youtube for Windows 7 netbook and you will see they all run responsively and as good as XP. One bad experience shouldn't be taken as a trend.

Just another witch hunt. First banning smoking in pubs now this shite. Apple need to prove that the damage was caused by the smoking and if they can do that they are entitled to say the damage was user inflicted. This biohazard excuse is utter bollocks. If they have ever installed a new processor the risk to them from the paste they use is as great as this.

Dim much Rob Dobs?

Of course the data is normalised, Dell has around 3 to 4 times the number of sales Apple do and they are only about 1% behind Apple in that chart. Unless Dells have super low breakdown rates I think this shows that the people making the report are smarter than you give them credit for.

The data of a 31% percent over all failure rate is the only statistic that can be questioned as having some bias, as that is what will suggest to users that they need a warranty. The percentage of failure rates by company is not relevant to whether one should purchase a warranty or not, unless Square Trade really want to target HP customers.

As has been mentioned, Apple get special mention because they make wild claims about their reliability over other PCs. This isn't the first reliability study I have seen that suggests they are exaggerating.

Apple wins attack of the clones

windywoo

Apple care only about money.

By allowing OSX to be installed only on their hardware they can choose to put huge markups on that hardware. The fanbois will say you aren't forced into anything but if you want OSX you do have to put up with Apple's crippled and limited range of hardware. It may be their right to do that but its also my right to call them money grabbing cunts.

Secondly, this is bad for the internet as a whole. Since one OS accounts for 95% of PCs out there its very easy for a virus writer to hit a large number of users and the incentives to write viruses are therefore greater. This has less to do with Windows security flaws (and of course they exist) than the fact that its such a huge target. There are only a handful of alternative OSes and even fewer of those are of appeal to the consumer market. Apple creates one of these and they sell it like its some sort of luxury chocolate. Ignore the marketing and fanboi bleating and you will see that it really isn't any such thing, but what it does offer is an alternative to Windows that has lots of software and hardware support.

If the diversity of operating systems was as great on PCs as it is on mobile phones, virus writers would have a much tougher job spreading their payload. It would also put to the test fanboi claims that OSX is virus proof. As it is, Apple sit in their isolated corner of the internet and mock Microsoft for making an operating system that doesn't just run on the handful of PCs Apple makes. Apple are elitist control freaks who like to think of themselves as visionaries. They are no more than peddlers of shiny trinkets to the vain and the stupid.

Irrelevant

There are only so many ways a UI can be made easy to use, inevitably they end up sharing features. It would be moronic to produce a car without a steering wheel just because you didn't want to be seen copying anyone. Apple have had to "borrow" ideas in the past. Mouse wheels, tabbed browsing and Fast User Switch spring to mind. Sometimes a feature is simply too useful to be ignored.

@magnetik, none of those tasks is particularly difficult, but finding an open program with the taskbar is simpler. And when an action has to be repeated often, the extra effort of expose or CMD tabbing becomes infuriating. The single menu doesn't waste screen real estate argument is not true. The bar is there whether applications are open or not. The dock wastes space since the space at the side is not used, and putting it on autohide simply means more mouse travel any time you want to use it.

Apple's mice still are one button in practice. There is no way to press left and right buttons simultaneously. There is no middle click on a trackpad or the Magic Mouse. Sometimes going out of your way to make something different is overlooking the simple usefulness that is present in the device you are trying to replace.

No we won't shut up.

Numerous PC users here have already pointed out the lack of value this unit represents, we don't need a Mac fanboy to tell us that. What would be the cost to add a Blu Ray player to a Mac mini? Oh wait you can't because you can't play Blu Ray on Macs.

Subtract the cost of antivirus, a free one will do for home use. No need for Windows Pro, Windows Home Premium will do for most and one of Windows's strengths is that you can choose a version that suits your needs. Most users will not need the Pro version so your argument that Leopard is a full version is irrelevant. Dell's support is next day support which means they will come out to your site, Apple ask you to come to them. The price includes online backup, Apple's Mobile Me costs extra. Add to the Mac mini's cost an adapter to connect it to your monitor. I'm a little unclear on the Mac support, Applecare costs more but I can't see a mention of a standard warranty so I didn't add Applecare.

I actually was directed to the Irish Dell site and the price came to 598 Euro. Your Mac Mini specs with an adapter comes to 766 Euro. So please leave the penny counting to the PC users.

windywoo

Blu Ray

Only seems to be in the highest priced Zino and that costs 744pounds, without a monitor. I don't know how many people need 6GB of RAM with an Atom processor but this model has it. This makes the computer less powerful than a Mac mini but costs more, with its only selling point being the Blu Ray. Surely someone can come up with a better solution.

The Acer Revo costs 300pounds, the 9400M can accelerate Blu Ray, put a Blu Ray player in it and an extra GB of RAM and surely it beats this?

You type out proper emails even on the iPhone. I have tried that virtual keyboard and even though its one of the best it still can't compare to a proper keyboard that you can use two hands and touch type on. Those keyboards are not good for email no matter which phone you use and you will end up sending emails not much longer than texts anyway.

Those pictures don't look amazing, but they certainly look better than ones taken on other phones that have received higher scores and praise for their cameras, certainly no worse than the iPhone. How is the music playback? This is a strength of other Sony phones and a weakness of the iPhone, yet its not mentioned here.

Your criticisms of the operating system seem to be more your own lack of understanding and unwillingness to accept anything that doesn't have multitouch. That pinch and zoom feature is such a gimmick. It really isn't necessary for zooming and is just there to make the user feel like they have just done something clever with their phone.

There was absolutely no need to mention Palm and yet you did, which just goes to show where this authors sympathies lie. Is it because they think adding more needless applications enhances the user experience? Is it because they like to punish their customers for not having purchased every electronic device they own from Apple?

Apple said to have axed Atom support from OS X 10.6.2

windywoo

Removing Atom support

Affects only a small subsection of the Hackintosh community and they are already a small subsection of PC/Mac (must I really make that distinction since Macs are simply PCs now) users. From reading the hackintosh forums I got the impression that most of them liked to use the legal copies for compatibility with updates and the challenge. And quite a few of them also had Macs anyway.

If the move is deliberate then its very petty, more likely its due to the Atom not being officially part of the Mac lineup in the first place and compatibility was an accident.

Palm Pre evicted from iTunes (yet again)

windywoo
Jobs Horns

@Daniel 4

Zune used to synch through Windows Media Player, and many other players still do. Apple artificially restrict their software so it will synchronise only with their device. iTunes was not created as a means to synchronise iPod music, that came later. Pre-ipod other devices were allowed to synchronise. In fact I think several of those devices are still supported, although they are so ancient nobody uses them any more.

windywoo
Jobs Horns

Why such Apple bias?

Apple provide an operating system with a media library that will only synch with its own devices (please please please don't bring up the XML file). I for one expect the media libary to be able to synchronise without resorting to third party software. If this were windows the cries of "monopoly abuse" would be in plentiful supply.

Apple users criticise PCs for the amount of junk that third parties install, and yet here is Apple condoning that very junk. Imagine if Macs only worked with Time Capsules or Airstations. They pick and choose when to be "compatible" when it suits them.

Yes its very easy for Palm to write their own software, its even easier for Apple to allow other devices to work with iTunes. But that would be about as likely as them dropping their prices.

Idiot. "People are so anti Apple they won't give it a try". People are anti-changing something that works just for the sake of it. Its not like a mouse is difficult or hard to use, yet Apple insist on making theirs work differently and even most Mac owners will replace a Might Mouse.

Apple offers a mouse that is different but its standard on their iMacs, meaning if you don't like it you have to buy a 3rd party mouse to replace it. By the way there is no way in hell to use a puck mouse with your finger tips.

Where does this idea come from that PC owners can't afford Macs? Of course they can afford them, they're just not stupid enough to pay for a bad deal when they see it. Mac owners talk about OSX as if its some sort of second coming. Fact is, the differences between OSX and Windows are very small to the average user who will only be surfing the net or using Microsoft Office. Macs are average PCs in shiny cases with hugely successful marketing.

windywoo
Gates Halo

So many Apple trolls

The dark Lord Jobs reach has grown long.

I have no great love for Balmer, but Jobs somehow manages to be perceived as a great innovator and leader. If you read a little bit about him you will see stories from his own employees of how he reduced people to tears, how his company has been in trouble for share backdating and even now with the iPhone Apple are as bullying or even more so than MS has ever been.

Apple continue to sell generic PC hardware in shiny cases with a shiny operating system at huge markups and their users delight in handing over far more than the actual cost of producing the machine. Their software continues to be compromised at hacking conventions and yet their users insist that OSX security comes from more than just obscurity. Apple users tend to come more from higher income brackets and are therefore baffled that others find Macs to be overpriced and not worth paying extra.

Google I suppose are a moderately less evil company, and have success in search and are achieving success with their browser, but Google Wave is just released (or is it still in beta? Difficult to know with google) so lets not go calling it a Messenger killer just yet. Android is not a roaring success at all. There are only a handful of phones using that OS and none of them particularly popular. Google apps are rubbish, every review I have ever seen of them rates them well below other competing products, and MS offerings are still in beta so a comparison is not very fair.

The reason I stick up for MS is that the competition just doesn't produce a viable product. MS offers an operating system that will work and work well on a tonne of hardware configurations with a tonne of software. Apple doesn't offer this. Linux offers some of this but with an increased headache to me in configuration and no game compatibility (I won't count WINE sorry, reduced performance is not what I bought my hardware for).

Berate MS as often as you like, call them bullying if you like, but face it, there is no competition.

@Gary F

I don't know where to begin because plainly reading is not your strong point. You have read all sorts of bollocks into my statement that wasn't there, or didn't read what was there.

I can afford a Mac thanks, have two, don't think they're anything special and certainly not worth paying extra for. Lucky I bought them as spares and repaired them or I would have wasted money. This is what irks me about Apple, their products are nothing special, they just look nice and people will lap that up.

All your points about other companies drivers fall to bits because Apple provides an operating system, not just peripherals. They allow other companies routers to work with Macs because they know they would be screwed if they didn't. They have to allow other companies printers to work with their OS because again they would be screwed. But since Apple make a media player and a phone they decide not to allow other products to work with the Media Library application of their own OS. They pick and choose as they please what should work and what shouldn't.

By the way, I am not suggesting that Apple write this software, just that they allow other companies to write drivers so that they can synch PROPERLY with iTunes, from within iTunes itself, not the third party company's software. Of course printer companies have to write their own software to make their products work, but frequently they go beyond what is necessary to make the hardware work and install all sorts of tray loading crap. Apple is encouraging this sort of bloat by refusing to allow other companies products to synch through iTunes, thus disadvantaging their customers. You can synch through all sorts of other programs but face it, the average computer user is not too well educated about computers and doesn't want the hassle of working out how to use another shitty piece of software for their phone. I should know, I help people with this sort of thing as a living, not Burger King thanks.

If this were Microsoft, the haters would be all over them crying monopoly. Well Apple is damn close to a monopoly with iTunes, and even if they aren't at that level yet, its still double standards to allow them to get away with this.

Sara Bee where did I hand out personal insults? I insulted a group of people, not one individual. You should see the crap they spout over at macrumors about PCs and Microsoft. Insult a lot of people and you get away with it. Insult one particular person and its a forum violation. In fact its Apple's followers that have pretty much set me against Apple. I bought a little second hand Mac and went to a Mac site to learn more about it. When I got there, the lies they told about PCs, the exaggerations made me not want to be associated with Apple. Apple's own marketing is such a crock of shit that it reinforced my feeling as well. Copy and Paste, on the iPhone marketed as if its something novel and innovative. Macs made out to be some sort of Fort Knox when in fact hackers just couldn't be bothered to attack them.

Although I agree that Palm were in the wrong to use another vendor ID, I also think that Apple are being their usual shit eating selves by allowing the primary media library on OSX to synch only with iPods. If this were Microsoft with Windows Media Player think of the witch hunt that would ensue.

Allowing 3rd parties to write their own software is an AWFUL solution. Just look at all the shit that third parties put on your computer for printers, cameras, phones etc. Windows comes under criticism for having lots of bloat, but Apple are encouraging it, and confusing their customers at the same time. What happens when the customer gets a new MP3 player? Are they going to uninstall their old software? In my experience, no they won't.

Apple use their OS to sell more iPods, a practice which is as detestable as it is lapped up by every fanboi with more money than sense.
