Apple: Trust us, we've patented parts of Swift, and thus chunks of other programming languages, for your own good

Pointer2null

booby trapped

So if you build your products around or by using swift, then Apple can infringe any patents you own with impunity for if you take action against them what was free suddenly won't be...

How can there be civil unrest if the world ended?

Google Chrome: HTTPS or bust. Insecure HTTP D-Day is tomorrow, folks

Pointer2null

A bit hypocritical

A bit hypocritical considering their email client defaults to remain logged in and actually forcing it to log out when you close your brower is non-trivial.

Who cares if you browse the news unencryption - if anyone gets your machine with email logged in they can have more fun resetting all your passwords.

You love Systemd – you just don't know it yet, wink Red Hat bods

Google to add extra Gmail security … by building a walled garden

Pointer2null

But it remembers your login

So much for security - Gmail remembers your login so the next person to access you machines finds themselves already logged in.

Also - try using firefox's session restore - pops a logged in gmail window right back for you.

Maybe the fact that a balloon is round is putting him off using one?

One more credit insurer abandons Maplin Electronics

Pointer2null

Maplin used to be good, but then seemed to turn into a glorified toy/junk shop. What decent stuff remains always seems to be 50% more expensive than anywhere else. Only use it for emergency purchases now.

Skim reading, for a second I thought there were eight online age checks, then the brain caught up and spotted "Lib Dem" in the title. lol

W3C's failed Do Not Track crusade tumbles to ad-blockers' Vietnam

Pointer2null

Re: Irony

Auto running videos with sound and adverts that splash over the content are the exact reasons why I use Ad-blockers. On a few sites I have disabled the ad-block as they don't have these type of annoying ads.

Don't crack that Mac: Almost NOTHING in new Retina MacBook Pros can be replaced

The future of cinema and TV: It’s game over for the hi-res hype

Pointer2null

the original interlaced design was also chosen as we simply didn't have the bandwidth to transmit all 625 lines (UK PAL) each frame. Transmitting 312 per frame and interlacing effectively cut the bandwidth required by half. (Your good old VHS machine cut this in half again!)

Master Beats: Why doesn't audio quality matter these days?

Pointer2null
FAIL

No point having decent hi-fi/speaker/headphone if the original recording is low grade junk.

I listened to an Amy McDonald album recently - sounds like it was mixed using a pair of cheap headphones by an amateur. Also listened to a track from Katy Perry (Fireworks), it's distorted and clipped ffs.

Seems like it produced to sound ok when compressed to a mp3 junk file and played on a nasty ipod or similar crap.

Movie, TV ads annoying? You ain't seen nothin' yet

Pointer2null
Thumb Up

less annoying

Much less annoying than having a 3 minute interruption in the middle of something.

'Occupy Flash' web hippies aim to rid world of Adobe plugin

Pointer2null

Two browsers

I primarily use firefox, it does NOT have flash on it. If I come across a site that I can't use without flash I fire up IE9.

Works fine with the added bonus that a lot of annoying ad's are flash based and so I avoid then.

Desktop Linux: the final frontier

Pointer2null

The reason 98% of the worlds pc use Windows is Linux!

Seriously though, Linux still is not as smooth and polished a user experience as Windows and for the average user it's not the best option. (I use both at work, but only Windows at home)

Overzealous Orange cuts off customer, still bills

Pointer2null
FAIL

Orange customer service - fail

I've had similar experience with Orange. My partner has an Orange contract with one month left - we called orange to give notification we were going to terminate the contract and they offered us an attractive deal to stay - so we agreed - they also said they would cancell the old contract for us and move the number etc. Should be easy since we were staying with orange. First bill arrive with a £400 contact cancellation charge on! wft? After speaking with several call center monkeys who didn't have a clue, we eventaully got though to someone who did know their ass form elbow and managed to explain that orange had goofed - they had set up the new contract for us, then extended the old one and cancelled the new one and charged us.

That wasn't the first problem we'd had with orange and probably won't be the last.

Virgin to offer 100Mb/s broadband by year's end

Pointer2null
Thumb Down

100Mb for how long?

It's like advertising a car that does 100MPG*

Like other have said, try actually using the bandwidth and you hit your download cap very fast then get throttled.

* for 12 minutes per day, then 15MPG for the next x hours.
