Are MPs smarter than 5-year-olds? We'll soon find out at coding school – Berners-Lee

stu 4

Coding

I wonder when the last time TBL coded was....has he still got is NeXT cube ?

Still, it's a decent sentiment.

was watching the early 1990s steve jobs interview in full on netflix last week, and he made the same comment - everyone should be taught how to code - because it teaches you how to think.

Which last time I tried to post similar sentiments got me downvoted to hell... but hey ho.

For what it's worth - I agree with both of em - but since when has an MP had to know anything about the thing they are talking about ? Even when they end up being a minister of a department, there's no connection at all between their background and the department (unlike certain other european countries for example)

Walmart's $99 crap-let will make people hate Windows 8.1 even more

stu 4

eh???

i hate windows - but wtf… it's 60 quid.

for 60 quid, you get a tablet with an HD screen 16gb of storage and a free 16gb sdcard.

wtf is your problem ?

If you have more than 60 quid, get something else. If you don't - then surely this is a great 'hudl equivalent' for the great unwashed of the USA.

I really don't get the attitude ??

I find the BA prices always accurate on the comparison sites. I've used them a number of times this year alone ?

I would have thought however frequent the calculations are done, provided there is only a matter of minutes between the comparison data being captured, and a purchase being made they are very unlikely to be different (i.e. unlikely to have been other ticket sales for that flight in the interval) ?

Trickle-down economics works: SpaceShipTwo is a prime example

It's not the same thing at all

You say yourself - some work some don't.

Well what are the reasons for why some work some don't ?

- popularity

- ability to mass manufacture for buttons

We've had aircraft now for over 100 years. We all want our flying cars a damn site more than a 5 minute trip on a rocket ship.... but we don't have em. why ?

Because they can't be mass manufactured for buttons.

I think it's great what Branson is doing. I think it's great what Audi did with the Veyron.

But it's got FA to do with trickle down economics imho....

Memory

1/2 of that article was moaning about fixed memory FFS.

Now, ok it means you have to decide at the start and pay 'apple tax' on it (which is no different from the 'dell tax' or the 'hp tax'...

But it's hardly a deal breaker. I have 3 mac minis - my very first one (core duo), needed more memory (and I actually stuck a new CPU in it too) when it's role changed (from web surfer to media centre in my house), the rest I just bought with sufficient memory.

You surely KNOW what memory you need when you buy it - why do you suddenly need more later except for when a machine gets re-purposed like mine ? certainly OSX upgrades never need it.

That leave the 'apple tax'.

well... if it DID have 4bg socketed memory it would be 2x2GB... 'cause that's the way of the world with every manufacturer under the sun...

so, you'd have to buy an 8gb kit (2x4), which would cost you about 60 quid.

or you could get a single 8gb, keep one of the 2s in there for about 70 quid.

and apple charge 80 quid.

it's hardly a frecking massive gap is it ???

BBC clamps down on illicit iPlayer watchers

stu 4

CONTROL

Seem to me, this is the beeb's next step down the road to access control.

At present, anyone in UK can access BBC content via iplayer irrespective of whether they have a licence or not.

It seems pretty clear to me, that by the bbc phasing out open browser support and tying APIs into propriety approved clients (they have to give you the API key), they can control the client devices.

Next step is to provide a similar API to check the user has a valid tv licence before viewing ?

Another 'media company' that just doesn't get it....

I'll continue to pay my licence fee -it's just about worth it for the 3 or 4 BBC shows I watch (I don't have a tv reciever), but I'll also continue to get BBC content via alternative outlets rather than their shit streams.

Pixel mania: Apple 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina display

stu 4

4k video editing

Thats the real USP - for still photos, etc there's no real need to see every pixel 1-to-1 for your work, but with video editing there is - shifting about a zoomed window just doesn't cut it.

We've already got the first of the true consumer 4k cameras out with the go pro 4 black, more will undoubtedly follow.

For now, my workflows are all 1080p which my current retina MBP and iMac 27 both allow space to view 100% within FCPX with room for the interface, but even the go pro 3+ shoots in 2.7K - which can't be viewed in FCPX full size as its about the same resolution as the whole display.

So they'll be a quick pick up from pros shooting 4k now, and over the next year as more consumer 4k cameras come on the market, it's going to become more and more attractive to these folk.

Lots of things are hard.

But they were a shit lot harder when you were trying to do them with a slide rule…

which was how these antiques where made.

you can refurbish all you want, but micro-fractures, etc in metals and alloys are bound to form and be undetectable after 50 fecking years !

And is it so 'hard' now ?

Now we have computers to do the grunt work and 75+ years of experience ? The success of space X says - NO it isn't. It's a piece of fucking piss. It needs good people and lots of cash - but its not more difficult than engineering the latest retina iMac.

the 'its not rocket science' line is 75 years old and it's passed its sell date.

Using stuff that was knocked out before we'd even invented transistors and that's been designed on A2 paper draft boards is fucking mental.

the cars for for grocery runs, long trips, etc, etc

stu 4

Re: Yuk

I get 17/18 on little 3 mile trips to the station and back, but on longer motorway driving 25 is the norm.

But again, its an irrelevance unless looked at within the whole 'pence per mile' idea.

I do 4k a year - so 4-500 quid difference a year between 25mpg vs 50.

then factor in the fact my depreciation is about 1000 a year.

that's 1500 quid a year without servicing, etc)

your brand new pugget will have cost you 5-8k the first year alone. But... ooo you've saved 400 quid on fuel. yippee doo.

stu 4

Re: Yuk

I dunno. maybe, but I have 2: my other one is a 2000 BMW M Roadster.

And I've had no problems ever with that either.

And even when the odd things goes wrong and needs fixing, its costing you less to service than the main dealer rates your paying for your brand new pugget tin can. So you can afford to have to replace the odd component and still come up tops.

On the other hand the amount of things that have gone wrong with mates cars that always buy new is as long as my arms.

Saying the above, having had both now for 10 years nearly, I'm ready for a change, and plan to punt em both in for an SLK 350 2005/6. Again - it'll be a 8/9 year old car, which was 40k new, but I can pick up for 12k. And I expect to get another 10 years of pretty much hassle free cheap motoring for less than the cost of a brand new piece of tin crap.

stu 4

Yuk

What a horrible plasticky piece of crap.

I run a 2001 4.4 v8 x5.

It's got everything from double glazing, 12 airbags to TV and 300hp.

It cost 70k fully specced up in 2001.

But I bought it in 2006 for 15k.

8 years later it's every bit the same as it was when it came off the production line.

My depreciation costs are less in 8 years than nearly ANY new car you buy will be after a year.

It does 25mpg. So the fuck what ? It doesn't go wrong. My COSTS are less than this thing would be per month.

Now you may hate bmws, you may hate 4x4s. Hopefully you will however realise that is not the point....

Even smart people who are aware of stuff like cost per mile, etc still seem to fixate on mpg.

If you really want cheap transport :

1. Don't buy new

2. Don't buy new

3. Don't buy new

4. Buy a 5 year old luxury car. From the body work, interior fitting to the large low stressed engines they are run and run and run. BMW, merc, Porsche, top range Audi whatever...

Oh...and finally I'd swear blind that by NOT causing another car to be manufactured my old x5 is a damn site greener than this thing too.

Hey, YouTube lovers! How about you pay us, we start paying for STUFF? - Google

stu 4
Meh

Youtube does pay creators

I'm a wee fish on youtube - but I've had about 480,000 views so far - will probably hit 500,000 by xmas.

Most of my videos are 'monetized' where I've been bothered enough to not use copyright music.*

It makes me about 50 quid a year.

It obviously makes youtube/google a lot more, when they are prepared to give me 50 quid - at 1%, maybe they make 5000 quid a year out of me advertising wise.

that's a pretty good deal for them - which is why google have billions and I have 50 quid....

However, if they now say 'you get FA now if a viewer pays us the advertising revenue we are losing... then I want 1% of that too... basically I should still get my amazingly generous 50 quid.

If I don't - f&ck of youtube, hello Vimeo.

youtube.com/powerlord69

(safe for work)

*which I don't get either - so basically here I've still created 90% of the content, just not the music, but google take this as sufficient reason to keep all the ad revenue there... wtf is that about. makes no sense. If the music companies weren't so much up there own arse they would actually REWARD me for using one of their tracks in my video. fuckwits.

Or that they died out at the same time as whales were already big (and could then propogate over the world).

I mean... what are the theories for why they died out ?

1. climate ?

2. lack of food (but surely even medium sized defensless whales would be pretty easy eating).

3. dislike of whale meat ?

4. only eat fish, and all the fish eaten by the whales ?

Re: 400 feet rule

FPV does yes - and if FPV then you are under 722 for sure - therefore 400 feet maximum.

But as I say, still not safe from colliding with 'real' aircraft was my point.

If you are not flying in an autonomous mode, and not flying 'remotely' (which I interpret as FPV), then I interpret 722 as not applying at all -since it only applies to 'UAS's which are defined as

-remoted piloted or autonomous aircraft.

FPV org has a similar view to me:

http://www.fpvuk.org/fpv-law/

So you have 393 to adhere too. So you've got to stay 50m away from other people.

But if you have eyes like a hawk and want to fly up to 2500 feet (which i did a few weeks ago) with your quadcopter - provided you DONT fly FPV, and DONT let it fly autonomously, this is within the law of CAP393 I believe since CAP393 specifies no maximum AGL - simply that the operator must be able to clearly be able to see the aircraft 'visual line of sight' to control it.

I mean, yer not gonna make a habit of it probably - so just an anal point really.

The main thing is dispelling this 'you don't need to worry about aircraft below 400 feet' rumour.

Also stating the obvious - that you are subject to exactly the same airlaw as any other aircraft - and therefore if you live in an area which has no CLASS G airspace, then I believe you will be breaking the law flying ? i.e. this would include london in it's entirety.

stu 4

400 feet rule

Aircraft can fly lower than 400 feet... I can fly 5 feet above the ground if I want. provided I do not fly within 500 feet of any person/building/structure.

As a paramotor pilot I regularly fly much much lower than 400 feet.

the 400 ft limit - just for CAP 722 UAS is a weird one and has really more to do with the history of UAs than now.

Arguably, provided your quadcopter cannot fly autonomously, and you do not fly 'remotely' - i.e. via FPV - then it is simply a regular old RC plane. And therefore covered entirely by CAP 393 - no specific height limit - you are covered by CAP 393 'visual range' - and it is left to you to interpret that appropriately based on conditions, weather, aircraft type, eyesight, etc, etc.

stu 4

great article - a nice beginners guide

I've been flying quads - big and small, off teh shelf and made from scratch for about 3 years now.

The X4 is indeed a great little item. And I have a few of them (I also fly the big boys).

But I'd recommend you get one of these babies.

1. it's only 18 quid inc postage (mine took about 10 days to arrive)

2. they have 'headless mode' (like the big boys have)

3. it has rubber feet and a better design than tha hubsan protecting the frame and motors from damage even when smashed into ground repeately.

4. it comes with prop guards making it pretty much indestructable (so far anyway!)

headless mode basically means it has a built in compass - so when you activate it pushing forward on the stick for example will always make the quad fly forward by the direction it was originally pointing in when activated (and usually it would be the way you are facing).

so even if the quad rotates/yaws around, forward is still forward. i.e. you don't need to try and keep it pointing away from you and/or learn to fly it coming towards you in reverse, etc.

Plus, it is more stable that the X4 - I've been flying mine all week in my hotel room - it's fecking awesome - in headless mode you can chuck it around the sky like a mentalist.

At least on east coast mainline 'abelio' backwater the wifi is nothing more than a hotspot for train mobile 3g connection. So it's as shit as the 3g coverage... which on the eastcoast mainline is utterly pathetic - there are about 3 or 4 spots during the 75 min journey between ipswich and liverpool st where you can get 3g.... most of the time it's between GPRS and no signal at all.

doesn't stop the wankers actually trying to CHARGE for the crap wifi right enough... on top of your 70 quid ticket.

Vanmoof Electrified Bike: Crouching cyclist, hidden power

stu 4

I'm a veteran of leccy bikes

Got my first one in 2008 - which I still use weekly.

I also converted my mountain bike for offroad leccy use (1000w), and have a little folding leccy bike that is great for commuting and keeping in the campervan.

As others have pointed out, the time of 2000 quid leccy bikes was 6-8 years ago. there is no reason why a good leccy bike should cost any more than a good bike + 400 quid for motor/battery.

There are lots of kits out for DIY, and there are quite a few companies who will sell you one ready to ride in the UK.

Or of course there is the cheap chinese jobs which are ok if you just want an occasional electrified bike based on a <100 quid frame. Horses for courses.

My 6 year old one is a Trex 7.2FX by cytronex. Frankly I wouldn't recommend a cytronex, as I have since replaced all electrical parts with my own (new hub motor, wiring, controller and my own lipo) after numerous techincal issues. But the idea of starting with a good hybrid bike is definately the best approach imho.

As others have stated the UK law is every so slightly more sensible than EU law in not requiring 'pedalec' only mode - which is just bollocks. I like to let the motor work on its own sometimes on straights/uphills, and then other times, I put effort in. that's the way I like the ride - WTF point is there in forcing pedalling - it's moronic.

The 15mph is also far too low imho. If it was more like 20-25mph I think we'd see a bigger uptake on electric bikes - power to weight (inc the rider) they are the best suited form of transport for electrifying - and yet it's held back by moronic laws like 250w/15mph/pedalec(EU).

fat and live in a hilly area ? tough shit - your 250w motor won't get you up the hills and will pull you along at walking pace. what the hell sort of intensive is that to people.

There seems to be no logic whatsoever to the 250w rule any more than the top speed or EU pedalec thing other than to protect incumbent industries as far as i can see.

Also - remember that most companies offer the bike scheme now enabling you to save tax, etc.

Mutts nutts

I've got 5 of the things - 2 3+ blacks, 2 HD2s and an HD.

I've been using them for years for my adventure sports - paragliding, paramotoring, sky diving, scuba diving, snorkelling, motorcycling, mountain biking, etc.

There really is nothing to touch the quality of the optics on the 3+ (and now probably the 4) - pin sharp edge to edge at 170 degrees is awesome. Plus protune records in insanely high bit rate (40+) giving amazing artifact free footage.

The 3+ is a pro tool, the 4 will be too. TV programmes are full of gopro footage these days, from TopGear, to movies. It's the defacto POV.

I can shoot incredibly 3d footage with the 2 3+ next to each other (I make a wee 3d mount you can download from thingiverse if you want it), and mounted on a gimbal (I'm stu of stubilizer 'fame') the results take some beating.

here's Skye from the air:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-NcAVY3DpM

Shooting at 2.7K in protune allows post edit cropping and still leaving crisp 1080p footage too.

Battery life is a bit pants (I use external lipo solution I built), but the 4 seems to have bigger batteries.

I am tempted by 4k - (both my macs are 3k screens) but for now, I'm gonna stick with my 3+s I think.

I think the budget one is the killer though - that's only a slight premium over the far inferior quality chinese jobs (SJ4000, etc) - with the great optics and decent sensor/ambrella chip I think they might have really chopped off the cheap chinese market.

I'm off to Menorca next week - and will be packing the gopro as always - this time, for some snorkelling footage (red filter on lens). :-)

For me anyway it's about custom apps, fitness apps, augmented screens, etc. I fly paramotors and paragliders and use a HUD build around a MOD Live at present running an app of my own devising that gives me all the info I need for flying on my HUD. I can see this 'watch' being useful for those kind of apps: make use of the gps, data, etc, etc on the parent device, but serve up just the basic easy to read info on the wrist app - so for example show me my alti, speed, closest airspace, wind speed, direction to home AZ, etc (as my MOD does), but far handier for more folk to wear than building a custom HUD into their helmet.

Same goes for stuff like cycling, running, etc. hence why it has pedometer, heart rate, etc build in. You don't want to be running along, taking your 5" phone out to see all the time - but a glimpse of the 'watch' is perfect. Clearly is you 'don't see the point of gadgets for running' then you're not the market.. but it doesn't mean there isn't one.

Make sure you don't get caught out with lipos, etc if this is going in hold luggage Lester. The rules are pretty strict now.

Or is it getting shipped ?

It might be worth trying to get someone like BA on board to 'sponsor' it a bit by providing assured hold transportation, etc ? It's flight related, GB first, etc, etc... they could be interested ? Let me know if you want to pursue and I'll find out some contacts (consulting at BA headquarters at the moment)
