AntiLeaks boss: We'll keep pummeling WikiLeaks and Assange

Miek
Linux

Re: ? Innocent until proven guilty? It would be better...

Julian Assange asked permission to leave Sweden which was granted by the initial prosecutor. Assange then left the Country and a second prosecutor took the reigns and reinstated the case, issued a European arrest warrant which kind of makes it look like he fled when in fact he was already out of the country when his *new* arrest warrant was issued. Julian Assange did not flee from Sweden.

"Which might be something to do with the fact that under Swedish law you cannot charge someone until they've been formally questioned" -- I'm quite positive that this practice is not confined to Sweden.

Study shows half of all websites use jQuery

Re: The Register could do with some jQuery / Ajax love

I believe the convoluted process of committing any action on the comment/forum threads is to maximise the amount of advertising shown (or in my case: the amount of advertising ad-blocked)

Yeah, those morons who sit in the middle lane are NOT enjoying a safer journey they are just lazy fockheads who make the road a worse place for other users.

Re: Ease congestion on the M25?

"Now imagine that they can see the gridlock before it happens." -- Are you suggesting that clairvoyance is an exercise that they can undertake?

"They can use that information to apply a temporary speed limit east bound into London, so as to reduce the number of cars arriving at the end of the M4." -- that only causes backlogs elsewhere. As soon as you mess with speed limit you seem to get gridlock.

Miek
Linux

Re: From the original article...

"On the other hand, the Highways Agency have done a good job of improving traffic flows through applied IT (eg variable speed limits, hard should running on the M42)" -- Are those the same variable speed limits that are always set to 40 when I travel the M25?

"The researchers think that it may be sheer speed that cuts the friction for the ice, in the same way that major faults can slip off each other during an earthquake – resulting in \"localized frictional heating in [the] ice rubble\"."

A bit like how Skis and Snowboards work. The friction melts ice directly beneath the board/skis allowing the rider to accelerate as the surface now has reduced friction.

Re: My Two Rules

If you don't want to fix something, try one of these two approaches:

1. Claim that it might take a while to fix as you are quite busy at the moment and give them a rough estimate of a month.

2. Suggest that you have no idea what's wrong with it and that it should be replaced.

You could also get creative and mix it up by starting with 1. and then progress to 2.

"Cycle paths have to be the biggest waste of space in the country. Miles of expensive, empty, tarmac, and on the rare occasions I see anyone on a bike there's at least 50:50 chance that they're riding along the road, ignoring the parallel cycle path completely." -- Every time I see a cycle lane, it is occupied by several parked cars and in other cases moving cars that simply ignore the solid white lines.

I would be in favour of getting rid of bus lanes and creating cycle lanes with a divider that prevents cars and other motor vehicles from entering it.

The current system of cycle lanes are poorly thought out and are mostly dangerous.

I would look to the Dutch as an example of how cycle lane infrastructure should be implemented. Dedicated, not half baked.
