Re: For those whining that Google's Maps app was "better"...
" Until iOS 6, my home town was hidden by clouds. (Yes, exactly as is being complained of in the Apple Maps app by others.)" -- Have you even tried turning off the satellite view?

"I think the design of the iPhone is looking pretty outdated and rather last decade, it still looks rather boxy," -- yes their poor copy of the nokia n810 is now feeling the test of time, thankfully they have moved on and copied the look of the Samsung Galaxy S2 with a sprinkle of n810 for good measure.
That's a nice Samsung Galaxy S2, oh, it's the new iPhone you say? Now who is slavishly copying another competitor's design ?
Basically the iPhone 5 competes with the Samsung Galaxy S2, not the latest S3 and it costs a hell of a lot on contract. If you are paying £36 quid a month, you should expect a phone of that specification for free with the contract not at an additional cost. Those who are rushing out to buy this product are idiots, this is not because I don't like Apple or anything, it is simply that it is an inferior product.
I'm sure the folks in support, who you think so highly of, will be more than happy to pick up the extra workload of dealing with "Windows 8 ... WTF!!!???" from the users alongside all the usual "Can you remind me of my password" queries.
Wow, sarcasm, that's new.
"And even if you don't like all that then Windows Key + D will get you firmly to your beloved old style grid based desktop that was usually just covered in at least one application anyway." -- So what's the point of a new paradigm if it basically sits on top of the old paradigm and removes certain useful and comforting features? It's a schizophrenic decision, rather than completely change the paradigm they half-heartedly include this new novelty interface that isn't ideal for all the use cases it is directed at.
The main gripe for the Windows 8 metrosexual interface is that it doesn't work for desktops, with or without touch interfaces for a variety of reasons and rather than provide a means to revert to the original features as was the case with previous versions of windows; they prefer to force this onto the users, some willing, some not. The heart of the matter (for me) is really all about the freedom to choose how you want to use your computer.
I see your point, but, is it really avoidable?
Top Gear is an entertainment show, whereas, the Curiosity Mission and those before it are furthering our knowledge of science rather than furthering our knowledge of Jeremy Clarkson's tastes and world views.

"Surely it's more nutty to believe this stuff without proper evidence." -- Well, here is a picture that NASA have taken depicting the track marks of a Rover they successfully placed on the surface of Mars at the beginning of August. Along with that, if you visit http://www.nasa.gov you can also find a wealth of information on the subject.
Troll Icon is for Wayland not Jai ;)
"For varying definitions of "easy". Easy to install the packages, infuriating to make them work properly" -- Not in my experience. I just searched gnome in Ubuntu Software centre, logged out, adjusted the session to be Gnome instead unity and logged in (as the poster above stated for XFCE)
I'm really not sure of the point of this article. So Apple appears to making a new dongle to bridge their proprietary connectors. It only appears to apply to apple hardware and Apple will be the first suppliers of said dongle. It sounds like business as usual. Is it simply that 3rd party accessory makers won't be able to punt low cost versions for all the Apple fans that are "On a budget"?
What's that go to do with filtering porn on the web "by default", surely an opt-in system would work for all parties concerned. Oh wait I forgot, your a puritan that thinks everything should be stamped out because *you* don't like it.
"So should the age limit on sex be removed too" -- No, it should be increased to 100 years of age, thus reducing the amount of morons bron like yourself.
"What about parents deciding their kid is old enough to go to the pub and buy booze?" -- What about it? I'm quite sure that this happens already, particularly in quiet country pubs.
"Windows Server also has massive advantage over Linux distributions. Roughly a tenth of the security vulnerabilities for starters, and it also has many many enterprise features that Linux doesnt, for instance thin provisioning, deduplication and mutipath SMB." -- Anything your Windows Server can do my Linux Server does better!
"The bureaucrats of the ministry seem to have learned to be opaque after being carpet-bombed by privacy advocates when they first attempted to introduce the Capability under its old name, the Interception Modernisation Programme. ®" -- Can anyone clarify at which point the UK became a Dictatorship comprised of a party of Dictators?
