No Donut or Eclair?

It is disappointing that the memory map is so small. Why no Donut? Also its a big put off that Eclair is unlikely to visit this handset.

Okay, so it is a budget Android - but that is no reason for such inadequate devices to come to market and thus sully the reputation of Android, which it will for some. It is when you see this kind of manufacturer behaviour that you can also see why some OS manufacturers refuse to licence their code.

Possibly a tiny win for Huawei and T-Mobile until Android 2.0, and then probably all hell let loose in 2010 as people see their, tiny, investment in technology was so short lived.

The more I find out about this Huawei the less I want to even think about it!

doubleTwist? Anyone?

Oh FFS Palm! Instead of dicking around making yourselves look like the complete prats you are, why don't you do yourselves and your few customers a favour and use doubleTwist ( http://www.doubletwist.com )? "Palm Pre - automatically convert your videos and sync them to your Palm Pre; sync your iTunes playlists and photo library."

This suite allows complete integration with the iTunes library and any other media files scattered around the user's storage. It works with almost every device known to man, I use it to sync playlists etc. to my Android devices, mirroring my iPhone as required.

Palm would do well to put a big sticker on the box to promote doubleTwist. At least that way this stupid tussle would be over and done with in an instant.

The crazy thing is ...

... if we all collectively stood our ground and twatted the half-brain neanderthals that stalk our streets at night then there would be no continual problem at all. Where the idiots win is when we all stand back and look on, taking no action, mostly because we fear the law will come down on us rather than the perps.

It is really heartwarming to not only read about this but for the official video to go out into the wild for all to see the comeuppance occur.

And before some bleeding heart liberal pipes up about the need to understand these in-breeds, let me just say that this kind of person does not need understanding. It is their victims that need understanding - the perps need some good old fashioned, but much needed, punishment. Then maybe *they* will develop the understanding that they cannot behave so mindlessly and selfishly.

Very nice to see

Quite impressed at cage-fighter tart that twatted both the yobbos in the throat while his female (?) accomplice took one on the chin as a distraction. It is nigh on impossible to be 'hard' when you're choking on your own spittle, tongue, larynx and anything else that happened to be in your gullet when the strike hits home. As the local fuckwit and his mate soon found out.

A joy to behold indeed, and very nice to see the cage-fighters putting their particular talents to practical use. Three hours later and I'm still giggling like a schoolgirl (an unpleasant sight I can assure you).

Ignoring Carl completely as a single voice of dissent - perhaps he is a frustrated cage-fighter wannabe. This a superb article to publish and to hell with the IT angle. IT would have done the 'girls' no bloody use at all.

A tray of beers for those two ladies it is then.

I've been commuting on an EV for over a year

I have been commuting on an EV (Vectrix maxi scooter) for over a year now, quite successfully. This is definitely the way forward, and all the nay-sayers have their heads stuck too far up their own ICE arses for their own good.

The battery tech has a long way to go yet - these are still early days for EV but everything has to start somewhere. I don't imagine in the early days of the ICE that we had a petrol station on every high street as we do now. The infrastructure for fuelling the EV will come along. Personal transport is here to stay, public transport is an unmitigated failure in this country, there are too many vested interests and its all about money before service.

And so small, light, commuter EV are a sensible first step. Longer range EV can follow as the tech develops, as it absolutely will. EV is here to stay, it will displace ICE in years to come.

We may continue to find fossil fuel for our beloved ICE. The cost of extraction will continue to rise, as will the taxation on it. The environmental impact will not go away without a dramatic and strategic reduction in ICE use.

In EV there will be many false starts and business failures (ie. Vectrix). But as sure as eggs is eggs, we will see EV take an ever increasing presence on our roads.

Google hits Android dev with cease-and-desist letter

Flame

Is it really that hard to understand?

Android is open source.

Google's own apps that it places on that OS are not open source.

Why is there this persistent notion that an open source OS means that any and all apps developed for it are also open source? They clearly are not if the licence terms of the application say so.

That Google choose to give away their closed source apps does not qualify them as open. In the end, Google have absolute right to issue the C&D letter if they do not want their apps redistributed or incorporated in branches of the Google Android OS.

It really is not that difficult children.

My New Handle
Thumb Up

@Those fancy batteries

Life threatening? Oh purleeze! ICE vehicles burst into flames too. Statistically a mechanical or electrical malfunction is bound to occur, it is a risk we all take as we mount any vehicle. We can't be worrying about such things or we'd never leave the house.

These speeds and mileage capacities are impressive in that in a very short time of serious development they're getting closer to what an ICE will give on a single charge. Its all heading in the right direction.

What I hope is that Mision (as did the now defunct Vectrix) show the way forward is to develop realistic looking vehicles that come from this century, and not some freak butt-ugly concept pile o'crap.

Good luck to Mission - lets hope that they get the commercials done better than Vectrix did.

Closing the lid is impossible ...

Labour and Conservative parties opened the lid to Pandoras box decades ago. The notion that either of them can close it and take us back to more peaceful times is naive in the extreme. It will take a new political party with great vision to do this - but given the UK's fixation with "celebrity" they would be very unlikely to be voted in.

The problem is that our own society in general and the political elite have all pretty much taken on board the mantra "If it saves one <fill-in-the-blank>". And so we now have the raft of completely disproportionate laws and brainwashing policies that taint parents/grandparents as pedophiles for photographing kids at events. We, as a nation, have actually bought into this wholesale. You can see and feel the effect of this everywhere. We're all either criminals, pedophiles or worse. In the face of this society itself retracts, refusing to participate or volunteer (we're seeing the effect right now), relying on the state's employees to do the job of parents, communities and societies (you try solving a local problem child and see how soon you end up arrested and put in court).

Huge, expensive and utterly futile databases are proposed and actually created. Meanwhile real harm and damage (Climbie, Baby Peter and a host of others) continue to suffer under the gaze and stewardship of those employed to protect and prevent. The answer? More databses, more disproportionate laws - when all that is required is to actually do their job and enforce the commonsense laws that were present 30 years ago!

It goes on, and on. And what party (Labour, Conservative or even Lib Dem) is capable of reversing this? How could it even? Society has responded to the continual ratcheting and gold plating of local and EU laws. We have en masse accepted and bowed down under these like the obedient citizens we are. Our very core values have changed beyond all recognition of 30 years back. The children of the social experiment are now those that are climbing the greasy pole of power. How can we expect them to know the difference, where it all went wrong, what they need to do to remedy? Cameron is one of those children of that age, as are his peers.

Ah! I am ranting .... FFS ... we need a full-blown revolution!!

@AC - "Forget the iPhone" - Well, you could try, but it'll be there in your face for quite some time yet. Better get used to it before you have an angina attack. "Android will be the dominant phone OS..." a bold bet indeed, but the competition is very much more than the OS, as Symbian and WinMo are finding out. Android manufacturers will also.

@Danny 14 - You're bang on there sir. HTC Androids have paltry integrated memory and Cupcake doesn't allow for live apps on SD. Install too many and the HTC Magic (f'rinst) slows down horribly, even running single apps. WTF? why are manufacturers drip-feeding us integrated memory?

Good luck to Motorola - boo hiss to Orange for getting this, hopefully not exclusive though.

Windows 7 versus Snow Leopard — The poison taste test

My New Handle
Pint

Makes a change ...

.. to see a balanced article on this thorny subject.

Having used both fairly extensively I reckon that I pretty much concur with the article wholesale.

Windows 7 is a massive improvement on that abortion that is Vista. But I cannot help feel that Microsoft is missing something by making the new OS as mixed up and muddled a configuration to buy as possible. OS X by contrast comes in one single flavour and does everything that Windows 7 in its most expensive incarnation can. And then the price difference of the OS is huge.

That said, the migration from Vista to Windows 7 should be a snip for any sysadmins who are currently looking after that bastard OS. The leap from XP to Windows 7 is not too extreme either, given that even in its first Beta form that OS was already streets ahead of Vista in too many ways to mention in a comment.

Meanwhile, I lovin the new Snow Leopard experience. All of the improvements and tidy-ups are superbly engineered, as can be expected.

I suspect that either way the two new OS are #win and #win alike.

FCC to vote on US mobile competition probe

Go

@VoodooTrucker

"I pay about $100/mo, so $1200 or £600 or so?"

At today's exchange rate that USD 1000 is GBP 724.94. My iPhone contract works out at GBP 408 per year which is USD 675 in your spendage for 500 minutes, 600 texts and "unlimited" data plus pubic WiFi at certain hotspots.

Good luck with the FCC taking on the inter-mobile operator competition. No doubt they'll be squealing like stuck pigs all the way. You've only got to watch the behaviour of that inglorious cartel, the GSMA, who despise any notion of true market force and prefer premium charging for any kind of roaming for voice and data.

@Nick Kew

Read the article again. The simple split has been RIM (Blackberry), Apple (iPhone) and Nokia (assorted stuff) as the top three sellers in EMEA, broken down by sales and ending up (1) Nokia, (2) Apple and (3) RIM.

If you were to take Nokia's mix of so-called smartphones and categorise them properly (as suggested by RichyS you may find that the gap between Apple and Nokia not too large at all.

No doubt some anti-Apple-everything 'tard will come up with a suitable explanation behind the figures to put Apple down in sales below Motorola and Tesco. I'll just go make a cuppa while we wait for the inevitable.

@ Geoffrey W

"That isn't a comment on the machines themselves but that's the impression I get watching and looking at their commercials."

Isn't that rather like the Daily Mail film critic who will not see The Antichrist but wants it banned all the same, because of his own impressions on what it might be, as opposed to what it truly is?

Go get yourself a Mac, cross over to the dark side, you'll never want to go back. Expensive, yes. But you really are getting what you pay for in terms of quality and experience.

That said - I remain to be convinced about the whole iTablet notion. It didn't work for Wintel, it is very unlikely - I believe - to work for Apple. But if they can pull said rabbit out of the hat then all credit to them for doing the seemingly impossible.

It is amazing how success brings out the harbingers of doom and the anti-all-things-Apple cronies. Is there some kind of Masonic lodge where they all meet up and compose their nonsense? It is the same old diatribe each time based on nothing more than a personal prejudice. Perhaps these same rednecks wear white robes with pointy hats and go a'burning occasionally? Sean Timarco Baggaley describes it in one. Well said sir. It really isn't a difficult concept to grasp except for all the anti-anything-Apple that haunt every single Register article containing the word Apple in it.

There can be absolutely no reason on this earth why any company should offer up its competitive edge on a silver platter for all and sundry to feast off.

Palm have had simply years to get into the game. Instead, with the Pre, they come up with some half-arsed idea of a handset and place a key reliance upon another manufacturers product. That they have had to reverse-engineer says it all. It is a wonder that Apple have not set their lawyers upon Palm for committing no end of legal infractions.

Really people, the way serious tech is used and abused defies logic. Some plonker even posted on YouTube a video of him dropping his 3GS into a pool (it survived by the way, show me any smartphone that would do that!).

All Apple have done is like any other manufacturer and posted a set of recommendations about use avoiding overheating that is bad for any electronics and battery tech. Like any guidelines they are conservative.

So I'm afraid that all of you regular nay-Tards are going to be sadly disappointed and have to go elsewhere for your satisfaction. You won't be reading legend tales of iPhones spontaneously combusting or giving up the ghost any time real soon now.

A useless judgement ...

With judgements like this, that no one save the top 1% of the top 5% of wealthy people on the planet can afford to pay, we may as well all start using P2P en masse. Lets all forget buying music legitimately and to hell with everything.

With such pointless fines that are impossible to pay it makes it much cheaper to steal music than to legitimately pay for it.

In one fell swoop, the RIAA and the US Courts have laid the foundations for complete P2P anarchy. But then it was probably expecting too much for either to make a measured and balanced response.

There will be no winning of hearts and minds with such a draconian approach.
