"Long term, though, if Windows is to have any future on tablets, the desktop has to go."
Er, I think you will find most multi-tasking, multi-user operating systems (like Windows NT, Linux and Unix) can support alternative UI "shells".
It wouldn't take a genius to have this as a user-selectable/switchable option.
But there again, Microsoft don't seem to have the brains left to fix simple faults, let alone realise what they actually CAN do (quite simply) with a bit of sensible coding. I blame that Salesman Ballmer for stupidifying Microsoft.
But don't get me going on their failure to actually TEST ANYTHING PROPERLY - for evidence, look at the number of patches to just-released patches.
And whoever let the Windows 8 TIFKAM UI past the 1st alpha (internal release) test needs sacking!
......getting involved with Oracle software.
What was the difference between v10.1.5.84.258.1254.12.15.27
Which is the version I should be using?
What apps will it screw up?
Ans: use the CD with the BLUE label (or was it the RED label?) and make sure you select the right options during install or NOTHING will work - AAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!
Windows Phone ISN'T and NEVER WILL BE a "REAL" success.
Since BillG left them to it, MicroCrap haven't got a clue. Witness the poor WinPhone sales, various PC upgrade, Hotmail and cloud failures recently. They don't care and don't test properly any more.
BTW - by "success", I mean something people want and can use like Android (if you want cheap, but not nasty) or IOS (if you have too much money to burn).
Bear in mind that, statistically speaking, 50% of the population are BELOW average intelligence, which is why so many of these fraudsters get away with it.
I have got fed up "stringing along" the calls from "Windows here, you have a problem with your computer" (max 20 mins of their time wasted) and leaving them hanging on the line while I go get the person they asked for. Warning to all scammers, I have acquired a REALLY LOUD whistle!!!!
No one has denied that the earth's climate has gone through dramatic changes in the past - in fact many of the same scientists who proved this to be the case have also been involved in research which proves the link between atmospheric CO2 and temperature. This link being proven, with human activity proven to be the major contributor to the recent rise in CO2 levels, and global average temperatures proven to be rising, you really ought to be asking yourself how bright YOU are. Insufficient data for you perhaps, not so for the vast majority of scientists working in the field.
WHAT A LOAD OF B****CKS! (Unless of course the PREVIOUS changes in climate were caused by the aliens who put us on Earth)
Climate change (previously known as "global warming" is just a scam to screw more more taxes out of the public.
Mage is absolutely correct - Vista (NT 6.0) was something NEW (Complete with a new set of faults/bugs). "Windows 7" (NT 6.1 was a major (and very successful) bug fix. "Windows 8" was indeed just a GUI change because if you install a new shell such as Classic Shell, it can work EXACTLY like what it is - NT 6.1 (Windows 7).
They charged for "Windows 7" to extract more money out of the muggins who paid for NT 6.0 (We who have been in the industry for some time know: NEVER, EVER buy x.0 from Microsoft - it never works properly).
Well said Daniel B - Windows 8 phones + tie-in to Blundersoft was always a receipe for disaster. Ever since Bill gave over the reins, Blundersoft have gone seriously downhill. Thank goodness, they only dragged Nokia so far with them. Maybe in a year or 2 Nokia might start making decent phones again?
HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! And they thought they were going to save money!!
As a previous commentard said: "Lock 'em up!" (and use the proceeds of selling their assets, including pensions to help pay the fines/compensation).
