Not surprising
if you consider that over 50% of Americans voted for George W Bush....... TWICE...

Ubuntu + Wine + w7 theme? If wine was running Windows apps at 100% capability it would be fantastic. Most businesses run MS office. Try running office on a tux machine and integrate with other apps like Trim EDRMS.
Also try getting the support needed for businesses in a non MS environment. I am not talking at the OS level but at the apps level.
Here is a little idea. Why don't we start looking at the car strictly as a tool. We only make it as powerful as it needs to be, so we don't need all the electronics to compensate for the over power and under skills? 60 bhp per tonne would be sufficient.
Parking assist, why? If a driver does not have the skills to park, maybe they should not be on the road.
All of a sudden we have a vehicle that is safer, cleaner and much cheaper. The only electronic that we need is a signal jamming device so imbeciles cannot use their mobile phone while driving. Another step closer to safety heaven.
There are studies in Germany that have shown that by removing road signs and traffic lights in towns, accidents decreased. This is because the driver HAS to concentrate on driving and road rules instead of having such an easy drive that the mind can wonder.
Increase education and decrease horsepower. Technology is not always the answer.
"Our tablet will be better than the iPad." A brick is better than an iPad!
But that is not the point. This type of device is not meant to be a tool, it is a toy, as such productivity and usefulness is secondary to the very nature of the object.
iPod is is prime example. There are many better mp3 players on the market, but it does not matter, it is still the toy to have.
So line up all you guys and try to compete against the mighty Apple, you stand no chance because you are fighting the war on the wrong front. You have to become more desirable than an Apple product, not more powerful, more useful, more efficient or more versatile.
It does not make any sense at all to put AV as a hardware solution, because it will not be a hardware solution in any case, it always be software that analyses code, even if it runs on dedicated chips and circuitry.
It does not make any sense to run the "hardware" AV on Mac or Tux machines since the vast majority of malware is written for Windows.
It does not make any sense for Intel to buy a security (term used loosely in this case) company like McAfee which is losing trust and popularity amongst IT professionals. McAfee has not produced an efficient bit of software in the past 5 years. Bloated, slow and extremely complicated to manage.
Unfortunately, the consumer will be paying for this acquisition through higher processor prices.
Long live ARM, long live AMD.
for Linux to beat M$ in the market of mobile is to unite. But that is not likely to happen. The end user wants an OS that looks and feels the same, regardless of the brand or model or version and that is easy to use, even if it means an expensive device with only half the functionality it should have (sorry iPad, bit it is true, you should do so much more).
So create the United Stated of Tux, come up with a common frontend and beat both M$ and Apple on the tablet market.
Yes it is.
If one can't design an external antenna that works properly, then one should keep the antenna internal.
But all phone have that problem... Yes and everybody exceeds the speed limit, does not make it right.
All new iPhones should have their antenna covered by a protective film.
As always the war between the Mactards, Wintards and Tuxtards is raging. Thanks Reg for inciting. So lets forget the OS, because at the end of the day, this is a hardware review.... correct?
CPU, RAM, HDD, chipset etc. Nothing to report, it is stock standard stuff.
Connectivity = too limited. Need HDMI, need 4 USB. Can do without e-sata only because it is USB3
Case = cheap plastic, too fragile
Styling = Not one of Apple's best, but not too bad
Price = too high
Battery life = good
Display = Sharp and crisp, nice format, not too wide
I believe there is much better hardware available for the price.
Good to see that AMD is taking the fight to intel. Hopefully they will have great success with the Fusion. Also hope that developers will embrace the technology and that the M$ and intel of this world will not try to "persuade" the said developers to favor their technology...
Firefox is still very secure, the add-ons are another matter. Is firefox to blame for some unscrupulous mongrel using their platform to propagate viruses, trojans and malware? To a certain degree yes, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the end user to secure their systems.
Firefox without any add-ons is more than adequate. Why would anyone install an experimental video downloader or password manager on a production system? Experimental means that it is no yet ready for full release for a whole range of reasons, same as beta software.
Still Firefox should be more careful when posting add-on on their site.
Quote: "If governments were as successfully at business as the Google guys were then the world might not be in the state it is in today."
That is 100% correct. We would be in a much worse state where all non profitable endeavors would have been canceled. You know stuff like Health, Unemployment benefits and all other unimportant things like that.
Google is far too powerful and far reaching. Just read some of their Terms of Use carefully... It is time that some Governments look into it.
Since the US patent system refuses to recognise the rest of the world patents, maybe it is time for the rest of the world to stand up to the USA and tell them to kiss their confederate butts and refuse to accept any US patents. The world's politicians are just too happy to bend over backwards for the US. Maybe a show of balls and a collective extended major finger is needed at this stage.
Lets not care about what the US or MS want, lets just use FAT or extFAT, maybe reverse engineer it and make the necessary 20% modification/improvement to avoid law suits. MS owes it to the world to use FAT and exFAT for free. They have ripped off just about all of "their" ideas from others.
So MS is obligated to allow other browser on their OS, in the EU having to distribute their OS without IE, but Google can go ahead and force you to use Chrome (which is crap). No way will I buy any device running Google OS.
I can wait another 20 seconds to boot my netbook in a version of Linux that lets me do what I want with the software of my choice, without surrendering my data and my first born to Google...
Google is overtaking MS as the biggest mongrel in the computer world.
Good analogy. Indeed it is like having a Roller delivered with a tear in the roof. It is also a good analogy because Rollers are expensive and are not that good. There are many cheaper and better engineered cars that offer better comfort, handling, power, economy, but do not have the badge...
When you see the number of sites dedicated to windows, Linux and Mac themes or GUI customisation, many of them with adware and other unwanted programs attached, I think it is a good idea to have M$ providing a few wallpapers.
How many of us already have changed the colour and added our own backgrounds?
I just don't think that M$ is opening the GUI skinning enough. As far as I am concerned, the theme is always Aero. What is provided in those themepacks is nothing but the lipstick to be put on the proverbial pig.
Now as long as nothing from sponsors is forced onto me, why not. Hopefully sponsored themes will be of quality. If you like having a car as your wallpaper, you don't have to get the image from the net and infringe copyrights in the process.
M$ admitting copying from Mac, what a big deal. KDE copying Mac as well, and Gnome copying windows, and Mac copying KDE. Ford copies Toyota who copies Mercedes etc etc etc
Look and feel is always going to be copied to a certain extent. Which is good. If a design works, why not use it.
The worrying thing here is the claim that the Vista core is stable... Same as the San Andreas Fault being geologically stable...
The Karmic Koala is nice, not without its issues, Intel chipsets amongst others. But Ubuntu 9.10 has not made any steps towards resolving the real Linux issue, which is not really a Linus issue. There are not enough workplace ready apps for Linux. Developers make money in the M$ platform and are not porting to Linux. What a shame.
Also, unless apps are installed from the repository, not all install properly, without tinkering and googling. Get all teh Linux flavours to standardise on file location and a single installer. That would go a very long way to eatup M$ market...
If there were as many apps for Mac that there are for Windows, then Mac would be a choice. But unfortunately, Mac is too limited and frankly I don't know why people spent top $ for an OS that can't run half the world apps, regardless how good the OS is.
Linux has a long way to go to satisfy both the ease of use and compatibility with apps.
For those who complain that the Brits are getting a bad deal... Yes the deal is not as good as for the US, but what about the rest of the world... M$hafted again.
Microsoft is not looking at thing intelligently again. By continuously trying to offer deals for some and excluding others, M$ is upsetting the vast majority of the planet. Family packs for some, Student discounts for others (or same) etc. Many will use pirated software, even in the enterprise, like it is common practice in China and India.
Since M$ has the biggest share of the market place, it should be easier for them to make the cheapest OS.... Once it is cheap enough, China and India will be looking at purchasing instead of pirating.... Big customer base.
Why do car manufacturers must make an ecologically friendly car that packs the punch of a sport's car.
Who needs to get to 100km/h in 5 seconds? Who needs to release 350 bhp to the road in a car? Who needs to reach 155mp/h.
I say make all cars smaller, lighter, less powerful. Impose a maximum power to weight ratio. This and the technology shown by BMW will have a real impact on the environment...
As expressed in this forum, when M$ does not retain backwards compatibility they are a bunch of money hungry bastards (which may be true), when Mac does it, it is great. Hard to understand. By the time the snow leopard upgraders have paid for the update itself, and then upgrade all the apps that don't work any more, they will have parted with more cash than the Window 7 upgraders.
Please develop the GUI, find better ways of using the desktop real estate, faster ways of scrolling etc.
Unfortunately, this is not the Linux problem. Make it easy to use. Make installers that work, make uninstallers that work, agree on a standard, get the manufacturer to release drivers for TUX straight away. Those who still pretend that any flavour of Linux just works has not tried to run it on the latest hardware or install software that is not in the repository.
Unfortunately, it is still M$ in front, then Mac and then Linux (despite its superiority as an OS).
At home I run Ubuntu because I love tinkering. At work, its the old M$.
If you are going to stay with Windows XP because of the 3 missed opportunities, then there is something wrong. These opportunities do not exist in XP. Files extensions are hidden, unhide them, it is very easy. Multitouch, M$ will probably release a "tablet" version as they have done previously. Taskbar and system tray. Look into it further as they are ways of customising.
If these little annoyances are the reason not to upgrade, then no OS will do. Linuxes have plenty of annoynaces that are worst than that, OSX has its share of problems too.
Could W7 be better, of course (so is everything else). Is it better than XP, it is a big YES from me.
