According to attrition.org/misc/keywords.html, these are some of the phrases that the NSA like to snoop on. I'm not sure why Leitrim (a county in Ireland), Elvis, 15kg quiche or Bubba the Love Sponge would be of interest to the NSA, but there's no accounting for peoples curiosity.

Selective Fact Finder

You've also left out the Selective Fact Finder, one of the worst I've ever worked with.

"Hi Von Krakenfart, have you completed X yet?" where X = Selective Fact Finder's latest brain fart

" Eh No, it's coded but we haven' released it yet as we've had to roll out several critical service packs to all the servers" We were also trying to fix a bug in code Selective Fact Finder wrote 20 years ago that didn't handle century leap years correctly but you don't dare highlight Selective Fact Finder failings.

Selective Fact Finder then goes to the managers meeting and wants to know what the IT people are doing because project X hasn't been finished.

And HR used to wonder why staff turnover in IT was so high.

Mine's the one with the updated CV in the pocket.

"Sorry Neanderthals, you can't use those lissoirs, iBone megacorp have a design patent on lissoirs with rounded corners".

This in turn lead to the extinction[1] of Neanderthal man people.

[1] In reality the Neanderthals did not die out completely, and there is evidence that Neanderthal and 'modren' humans inter-bred, about 4% of modern human mitochondrial DNA seems to come from Neanderthals. In fact, it's possible to see some Neanderthal traits in modern humans; e.g, low forehead, prominent eye-brow ridge, broad nose, occipital bun/ridge, and in the USofA, membership of the republican party.

Re: Not learning from history?

"So, is it because becoming a politician makes people stupid and arrogant, or is it only stupid and arrogant people who want to become politicians?"

No, what you call stupidity is not actually stupidity, it’s a characteristic of sociopaths, a type of arrogance, a belief that they are right, and when it’s wrong its somebody else’s fault. Personally I think a very high proportion of politicians are sociopaths.

Here are some of the most common characteristics of a sociopath:

• Conventional appearance, dark suit & nice tie.

• Glib, superficially charming, often highly verbal

• Promiscuous sexual behaviour

• Manipulative and cunning

• High sense of entitlement (have the moat cleaned at taxpayers expense)

• Lacks a sense of moral responsibility or moral conscience

• Shallow emotions

• Callousness, lack of empathy

• Lying without remorse, shame or guilt.

• Interested only in their personal needs or desires, without concern for the effects of their behaviours on others.

How are they going to balance the intelligent, mentally stable people they'd need for a mission like this

Well, that would not be necessary Mr. President. It could easily be accomplished with a computer. And a computer could be set and programmed to accept factors from youth, health, sexual fertility, intelligence, and a cross section of necessary skills. Of course it would be absolutely vital that our top government and military men be included to foster and impart the required principles of leadership and tradition. Slams down left fist. Right arm rises in stiff Nazi salute. Arrrrr! Restrains right arm with left. Naturally, they would breed prodigiously, eh? There would be much time, and little to do. Vandalise a telco, and embarrass the telco for having shit security which embarrasses the executives who outsourced IT security to their brother-in-laws company, every customer of the telco is affected by increased charges and fees as the telco spends more money on advertising and lobbying politicians for greater punishment for people who expose weaknesses in the telco's security.

Meanwhile in order to incentivise staff to work harder the telco imposes a 10% pay cut of staff and outsources half of their jobs to a third world country while executives get more share options for reducing operating costs.

Scale is very important in crime.

[1] We abandoned a plan to virtualise our servers when it emerged that moving oracle from the dual core servers to the quad-core virtual servers would have doubled the licencing costs for no advantage even though oracle was going to be configured to run on on a single cpu. A side effect of that is that it has extended the life of the big blue box.

Apple share-price-off-a-cliff: Told you that would happen

Field Marshal Von Krakenfart
FAIL

Re: Don't blame Apple for the price drop

The reason the stock price is dropping is not because aapl is not making money hand over fist. It's because there's no more innovation*. In the meantime, others have not only caught up, but left aapl in the dust.

Certainly crApple have become victims of their own success, for years crApple have innovated, but how far can you constantly create a new product because, as mickeysoft have also found out, there is a threshold above which the incremental improvement in a product line is outweighed by the cost of acquiring the latest shiny thing. The iPhoney was a good logical development of earlier productsinvention, the iPhoney 2 & 3 probably represent significant improvements over the earlier versions, but lest face it, once you have your 8 megapixel pixel camera 64 GB media player internet browser (oh yeah, it makes phone calls as well), where do go from there?

Large amounts of cash are also a bad thing for a company that develops and improves previous products innovates. Unless you are a cash rich company like Coca-Cola, where innovation consists of bottling london tap water and adding some poisonous chemicals, excessive cash is a liability.

Cash or cash equivalent securities are a safe commodity, unless you have it on deposit in a Cypriot bank (add French, Spanish and Italian bank to that list), but safe also means low rate of return on investment. Speculators Investors don't like low rates of return.

An excess of cash over that required for working capital represents unused capital (see above), it should be invested to create even more profit or distributed to shareholders = greed not satisfied, and speculators investors don't like that either.

Paradoxically, and I can't remember the finical ratios to use (rate of return and some others), too much cash also increases the cost of capital ratio for a company.

And the is also the psychological effect of too much cash on a company, It increases risk by creating overly confident management.

Yes, it's crApples fault the share price has dropped, but it will reach a equilibrium point where all these factors will balance out, then crApple will "invent" a new iFad, stock price goes up, market get saturated, excess cash, stock price drops, more bad news because speculators Investors don't like yo-yo stocks unless they are shorting the stock in the market creating more price instability and so the cycle keeps repeating.

Agreed, OS version does not matter unless there is a fundamental flaw in it.

I had to do a double take on the article, crApple's head marketer is Phil Schiller... AKA Phil the Shill, FFS you couldn't make up a name like that unless you were writing the latest Hugh Grant lightweight comedy. But I digress.

Phil the Shill said "You have to love and use them" phones presumably and not the iSheep who buy them, No Phil, you use your phone and because it provides the functionality you need and you love it because of that functionality. You may think that there is no difference between , but there is and what Phil the Shill seems to be saying is that crApple owners are more interested in owning the latest shinny things.

OK, this is a Orlowski story but I can still see the merit of the points in the story.

So WTF is going on, on one hand tory lord Darth Vader-Mandelson wants to change the law on copyright that would make it an offence to download copyright material and give extra rights to the copyright mafiaa to "protect" rights holders, and constantly "extends" the time limits for copyright holders,

On the other hand they try and sneak changes into copyright law that will screw over the small copyright holders rights.

Oh! hang on, I think I may have answered my own question. Always follow the money trail, and ask yourself who's paying for the lobbyists benefiting from this change to copyright law.
