Homeland Sec., RIAA Torrent lists published
Best torrent search engine ever.
Oh Look! the work laser printer is on the list.....
What a fantastic site, I was able to search for some items and see what sites they were available on, It would seem the thing to do is to put the name of the torrent site in the file name.
What a great rescource for downloaders.
Picked this up from the site as well, I love the presumtion of guilty until proved innocent
"Well, you may have narrowly escaped our crawlers this time but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been so innocent. You could just be very good at covering your tracks...for now. However, it looks like we’ve picked up some activity from your friends or family. Maybe it’s time to give them a stern talking to about the importance of legally downloading their music and movies and how Lady Gaga is starving and how George Clooney won’t get proper royalties because of pirates like them!!! Oh, the HORROR!!!"
I wouldn't shoot a policeman and then shit in his helmet either.
If I could have used multiple icon I would have used, WTF, FAIL, Joke Alert, Troll, Jolly roger and No shit Sherlock.
The cure for US job woes: More immigrants
They are changing the H1B program (sort of)
Merkin senator Charles Schumer is putting a bill before the senate and would offer up to 10,000 working visas per year to Irish citizens to work in the United States, the visas will be called E3 visas and are similar to the ones already given to Australians and will allow people to work in merkin-land if they can find a sponsoring employer, however, unlike the H1B visas time worked in merkin-land on an E3 does not count towards getting a green card or citizenship = come and work for us and if you cause any problems or look for pay rises you can fuck off home.
Icon = under the thumb.
Goat Jam & Matt
Once again, much to my surprise, I find myself agreeing with Goat Jam's somewhat OTT post!!!!!! He/she is close, but no cigar.....
I feel that a better description of what is wrong with merkin education, have a read of Charles Pierce's book "Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free"
To quote from the blurb on Amazon:-
The three Great Premises of Idiot America:
· Any theory is valid if it sells books, soaks up ratings, or otherwise moves units
· Anything can be true if someone says it loudly enough
· Fact is that which enough people believe. Truth is determined by how fervently they believe it
With his trademark wit and insight, veteran journalist Charles Pierce delivers a gut-wrenching, side-splitting lament about the glorification of ignorance in the United States.
Pierce asks how a country founded on intellectual curiosity has somehow deteriorated into a nation of simpletons more apt to vote for an American Idol contestant than a presidential candidate. But his thunderous denunciation is also a secret call to action, as he hopes that somehow, being intelligent will stop being a stigma, and that pinheads will once again be pitied, not celebrated. Erudite and razor-sharp, Idiot America is at once an invigorating history lesson, a cutting cultural critique, and a bullish appeal to our smarter selves.

$40m may sound a lot but remember google also want to give $33m to NASA to give Hangar One a makeover so that they have somewhere nice to stash their fleet of eight private jets!

No doubt the donation to the charitable fund will be made in whatever country has the highest tax, any chance it will be made from one of the international tax havens that google operate from.
Just because I'm a cynical old git doesn’t mean that there isn’t some financial advantage to google in doing this.

'Allo 'allo, wotz been going on 'ere then?
So a “software development student” manages to crack facebork security put in place by a whole team of “security experts”
What was the "highly sensitive intellectual property"? Details of a flawed security application?? And to crown it all facebork only found the activity by accident!!!!
“At Facebork nothing is more important to us than the security and integrity of our site, and we take any attempt to compromise our security network incredibly seriously. We work closely with law enforcement agencies and the police to ensure that offenders are brought to justice”
It was lucky for facebork that Mangham was "of good character", I wonder what would be the outcome if somebody of dubious character did the same thing?
Methinks that facebork should report themselves to the plods for implementing poor security.

To be boldly buried where no one has been buried before
Portions of the cremated remains of Gene Roddenberry, Timothy Leary and 22 other people were put into orbit onboard a Pegasus rocket in 1997 which remained in orbit until 2002.
Some of Eugene Shoemaker remains were carried to the moon onboard the Lunar Prospector in 1998, so strictly speaking the only person buried in space is Eugene Shoemaker.

P2P veterans sue the Cloud ... for copying their stuff
I for one…
...do not see any irony in that.
I do see some irony in the fact that the copyright mafiaa would sue napster/kazaa et al. for breach of copyright and then use similat technology themselves without having to pay any royalties for using it.
Of course the *MOST* ironic thing that could have happened is for the copyright mafiaa to have said to napster/kazaa et al. “Hey! That a great bit of technology you have there, can we buy it from you so we can use it as a delivery medium for the music we want to sell”

FOI request turns up Carrier IQ surprise
Occam's Razor
This particular use of Occam's Razor is somewhat misplaced, the principle of Occam's Razor is that "simpler explanations, all other things being equal, are generally better than more complex explanations".
If you agree in principal with the idea of Occam's Razor then you should also be open to some form of logical reasoning and the evaluation of previous track record to determine which theory is more likely, so while the simplest explanation is that Carrier IQ is under investigation, a more pragmatic analysis of what is happening would seem to imply that the FBI are using the data either for a genuine criminal investigation or for some nefarious purpose.
Given the amount of paranoia and the inward looking mentality of a significant portion of merkin-land, and the constant stream of goebbels like propaganda about the so-called War on Terror, aka ‘amerika under attack’ being used as an excuse to erode civil liberties, such as the Bush’s authorising of NSA warrantless wiretapping, abuse of the patriot act, the National Security Entry/Exit Registration System (NSEERS), the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA), the Real ID Act, the Military Commissions Act, and the no-fly list, and hand control to vested interests, my money is on the last option.
Anyway, I’ll leave the last words to obama:-

@Anadish Kumar Pal, spot the troll
I thought that "Look for DCE research in Sweden, if you want to see the shape of the things to come" would be a fairly unique string to search for on the interwebs, it is. It looks like you have posted nearly exactly the same comment on over 30 more-technical forums than elReg since 21st Nov 2011
Given the number of negative comments you have received on other forums I would have thought you would have refined/developed your original post to include a little bit more information than your first post.

Mythbusters cannonball ‘myth-fires’
Any relation to Horatio?
Alameda County Sheriff's Department spokesman J.D. Nelson said:
"It missed the target and took kind of an oddball bounce, It was almost like skipping a rock on a lake. Instead of burying it into the hill it just went skyward."
But he's not the first Nelson to realise that a cannon ball will do more damage if it 'bounces' first.

Well if $DEITY did design it he couldn’t have been 500 million years ago because some followers of $DEITY believe that the earth was created only 6,000 years ago over a six-day period.
Which explains why it is extinct, obviously 6,000 year old aussi’s hunted it to extinction, probably no doubt mounted on dinosaurs with saddles – see the Creation “Museum” near Petersburg, Kentucky

New Turing petition calls for criminal pardon
barbaric, yes.
The organo-therapy did literally ‘boggle’ his mind, organo-therapy which is just large doses of the female hormone estrogen intended to reduce sex drive, had severe negative effects on Turing, he became impotent, his breasts grew larger and the treatment caused depression and a feeling of despair.
I suspect that Turing’s "crime" was not that he was a homosexual, but that he showed no remorse for his "crimes".
the "it's the law excuse"
A variation of the Nuremberg defence. An excuse to abdicate all rational thought processes to somebody else’s prejudices, is it because it is also in a 2,400 year old book of myths and legends?
Just because something 'is the law" doesn’t mean it is right, how many oppressive regimes around the world have abused human rights because '"it's the law"...

Mozambique menaced by flesh-eating bananas
Obligatory phallic reference
You don’t normally find spiders in bunches of bananas and I’d think the reason is because bananas are transported in a unripened state and are ripened by exposing then to xylene gas, and considering spiders have such poor respiratory systems, probably kills them.
And now the real reason for making a post

Anonymous launches OpRobinHood against banks
The chairperson (fixed it for you) of your bank views small shareholders at an AGM the way you would view a lump of dog shit on the sole of your shoe, how do I get rid of it without having to touch it.
You could get 5,000 people at an company’s X AGM, all of them critical of a companies directors, but when it comes to a shareholder vote, the number of voting shares held by the 5,000 are totally insignificant when compared the voting shares held by other companies (where some of the directors of company X are also directors).
So when the vote for the remuneration package for the directors of company X takes place the 5,000 vote against the package but all the OTHER companies vote for it, company X then issue a press release saying that the shareholders have confidence in the directors of company X.
As part of this incestuous relationship, the directors of company X then return the favour to the other companies at their AGMs.
Anybody who thinks that being a shareholder in a company somehow gives you a say in how a company is run us delusional, well not unless you own at least 30% of the company.
