Which actor should play Steve in upcoming biopic?

LuMan
Joke

Jobbing Actors Required

Well, seeing as this is a Hollywood flick, historical accuracy will be somewhere in the car park (or 'parking lot', as our cousins over the pond would say) so, with this in mind, I think Jackie Chan should play the young Jobs, striving to make a name in a strange land after being stolen from a Triad-controlled Chinese workhouse, and then Ving Rhames to play an older Jobs who takes on the might of Nasty Rival Company (with a despotic, evil, bastard of a boss - played by a Brit, probably) through the use of guile, sex appeal and bloody big guns and explosions.

The plot will write itself, of course.

Loved it!

An excellently written and put-together article. The Reg bosses should be proud of you. One of the best articles I've read on this e-tome for a long time.

WRT Mr Jobs - the discussions in the workplace, pub, breakfast table or anywhere will continue to portray a man deserved of both like and dislike. We've seen in these forums how he has been lambasted and revered in equal measure (and you can make your own mind up as to whether he deserved it or not).

My tuppenyworth: The world needs people like Jobs. They may not always be liked, but they give us fuel for debate while, more importantly, moving us forward. I liked the man. He will be missed.

SotC is nothing short of beautiful. Even on the PS2 it looks fantastic. I remember playing the demo when it first came out on an OPS Magazine coverdisc and stopping dead when I first saw your initial colossus. Cries of 'How the bloody hell are you going to kill THAT?' echoed around the room, along with plenty of 'whoa' and 'woo!' sounds when you get Aggro within stomping range.

Hoo-bloody-ray!

At last, a pad manufacturer/supplier/whatever with a sensible attitude to what folk might actually want. Simply make your choice - root it and void your warranty, or don't and keep it. Most of us are adult enough to make our own decisions. Not to mention that, at that price, you could buy one to hack and one for keeps.

It's also worth noting that not all hacks are bad. Some even enhance the operation of the original firmware and OS.

Good going, Amazon. Let's hope others follow suit.

I remember many a late night stuffing disk after disk into my Amiga (until I got that massive 20mb hdd). This game was (and still is) the best adventure game ever made. Better than Day Of The Tentacle, better than Simon The Sorcerer and better than Flight Of The Amazon Queen.

My pal got the iPhone version with updated visuals, but he still reverted to the original graphics 'cos they're soooo much better. If you find the right SCUMMvm you can pretty much play this (and others) on any device. Sheer heaven.

PC games to outsell console software in 2014

LuMan
Stop

@ph0b0s

I'm sure I don't need to point out that the root of this discussion comes from a graphics card manufacturer and the crux of the article (towards the end, at least) was a comparison of how much more powerful Nvidia's cards are compared to the capabilities of PS3 and Xbox360. So, it seems fairly obvious that the point I'd make would be that you can buy a whole console for the price of a decent graphics card. Not such a dumb comment in context.

WRT to my supposition that the only advantage PCs have is graphics; no idea where you got that from. I certainly didn't allude to it. I'm not so naive as to not know that multiplayer gaming on PCs is far superior (lower latency, more services, more concurrent online gamers).

But I stand by my point that graphics do not a great game make. Just look at Angry Birds!

LuMan

Extrapolation - or something

Hmm.. Looks like the graphs show quite clearly what Nvidia want to tell us. But the numbers are purely speculative (unless Nvidia have a time machine).

It's true that graphics processing on PCs is superior, but good graphics do not a great game make. Plus the fact that you can't buy a decent gaming PC for the price of a console. Also, add in the fact that the pre-owned market is huge for consoles. Christ, our local Blockbuster has more floorspace given up to pre-owned console games than movie sales (not rentals, obv).

WRT Skyrim (and others), after the initial 'ooh' and 'aah' of your opening gameplay you become more involved in story, character development and, oh yeah, gameplay. Graphic capability will start to wane in importance. It looks to be something special (over 300 hours of gameplay) and it's this gameplay that sells games. Not prettiness.

Aesthetics

Am I alone in thinking that this looks a little ugly? Apple seem to spend a long time on making their stuff look pretty (definitely form over function), so who's going to want to shove it, end-wise, into a black lump of plastic? Even the 'cheap-as-chips' Kensington jobbies we have at work add a bit of style to the less-than-attractive Lenovo StinkPads we use, so I'm sure designers can come up with something better than this.

Hmm.. I used my wife's mobile phone upgrade to get a shiny Xperia Play and think it's brilliant. As any fule gamah noes, there's only so much you can do with on-screen controls and proper, hardware buttons are a must for any serious gamer. I'll be getting a Vita because (as has been mentioned in earlier comments) the games lend themselves to a more immersive and rewarding experience. So, Xperia for sneaking a quick bash on Asphalt on my lunch break at work, and the Vita for getting a proper fix while the wife hogs the telly. Win-win.

WRT not being able to aim vertically, there's no need. Even in Doom. The engine only requires you to aim in the horizontal direction of the baddie as the vertical component is non-existent in Wolfenstein and forced in Doom. Now, Hexen on the other hand...

Sounds like a good invention. Buy a newspaper made of the stuff, read it, then get it updated the next day. A bit like a Kindle, but without the electrical gubbins.

Dixons Retail boss pockets £1m in face of consumer meltdown

Not surprising at all.

This isn't the first time this has happened - particularly at Dixons (or DSG, or DSGi, or whatever they call themselves this week). I remember being made redundant from DSG nearly a decade ago, not because the company posted a loss (it didn't), but because it didn't make as much as the 'analysts' suggested it would. Cue: shouty shareholders and the CE decides to dump a load of staff.... and then awards himself a cash bonus which would have kept a couple of us employed for another ten years.

It's politics. The board exists to keep the shareholders happy and the rich-club rich. The workers? Just a means to an end and disposable. Sad. Very sad.
