Re: How many times do we have to say this

Wrong - Apple negotiated a visit to see the Alto system in operation at Xerox's premises in exchange for stock. Apple did NOT exchange stock in return for being permitted to copy the Alto OS.

Check your facts dude, sure you may or may not have been alive in 1979 but there's enough historical evidence that contradicts Apple's spin for even a young'un to be able to make an educated and informed analysis of what happened back then!

As for the rest of those who jumped on me, since when has stating factual history been considered trolling? Are we so far removed from reality that we must regurgitate modern spin instead of telling the truth?

Tzael
Childcatcher

Xerox know a thing or two about being copied...

Since Apple got away with copying Xerox' innovative graphical user interface back in the very late 70s and early 80s then it seems only fair that Apple should be willing to share their 'innovations' with other companies. Oh wait, that's right, iOS isn't exactly anything new in terms of its GUI...

Re: The WoW killer ?

I'm not a fan of WoW, but I do understand the gameplay qualities that Blizzard have capitalised upon to draw in a large playerbase who are susceptible to gambling addiction.

What got me interested in this article was the quote stating "amid bold claims it would attract more players than World of Warcraft"... I'd love to know where such a quote was sourced from, as it is fair to say that Bioware have _never_ made such a claim. Maybe hopeful fans have made such a claim, but certainly not Bioware.

Energy crisis over - for 250 years?

Re: Gasland

Gasland gives ample reason to prevent fracking from taking place, especially in the UK which is so small compared to the USA. The evidence against fracking existed prior to the publication of the Gasland documentary, thankfully the documentary has helped spread awareness of the irreversible damage that occurs through application of that process.

I'm not comfortable with the idea of our energy reserves being 'secure' for the next 250 years, gives the impression of being able to sit on our arses and ignore the need for cleaner energy supplies in the meanwhile.

Delete from Facebook - I don't think so!

"There's a popular concept that you can't delete information on the internet," said Allan.

"Facebook is very clear about how you can do that. It's confined to our own service. We're very explicit in our terms to say 'Hey, if you publish information to everyone on Facebook, you're publishing to the whole internet'.

So how come despite deleting my employment and education history over a year ago, Facebook's friend finding feature still offers links to find friends located at those schools and businesses?

Plus my latest irritation, the favourite sports and sport celebrities - added one of each over a month ago by clicking the 'Like' button on those two pages. Have removed the 'Like' status but absolutely no way to delete those pages from my favourites.

Re: dumb

Cheers for getting in quickly to point this out. First the phones weren't bricked; removal of the power source (i.e. the battery) was enough to reset the problem and make the phones useful again. Secondly, many of us with the Samsung Omnia 7 were able to apply the update without a problem.

Articles that make general statements should be held accountable for their innacuracies or attempts to 'spin' the truth. Reality is vast majority of Omnia 7 users haven't had a problem with the update, and Microsoft merely took the precaution of withdrawing the update so that these reports could be investigated properly and the actual cause determined.

Government should extend agile development for IT

Tzael

Agile vs pre-planning

Agile development practices are just as much of a lock-in as pre-planned specifications. It's about picking the right approach for each project.

Private businesses love the agile development philosophy because it blurs the finish line for project delivery, and allows for on-going billing of time to clients. Agile development has positive attributes for handling highly dynamic projects so it definitely has a place in some scenarios. Just not all scenarios.

The wave of privatisation

This video gives a good overview of what is being done to the NHS right now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNiruX2gZDc

Reading this article on The Register makes it clearer how the government is ensuring that private businesses will have permission to access and use our medical data without fear of prosecution. On the one hand that means private companies being able to deliver a suitable medical service to us, on the other hand why do we need to hand over the NHS to private businesses - what can they do that we as a country can't? Either the NHS survives on similar budgets in which case stick with a public NHS, or private businesses increase costs thereby ensuring higher taxes or additional outgoings on medical insurance. Do you really want an accountant deciding if you qualify for treatment?

Re: Zune?

First: Zune facilitates the synchronisation for WP7 devices, much in the same way that iTunes works for iPhone users. While not essential for using the phone, Zune will ensure that a complete backup of your phone's data is taken prior to an update being applied, and will allow you to roll back to a previous version should any problems arise.

Second: Zune only goes searching your entire computer for audio if you tell it to. It will _offer_ to check your "My Music" folder but you can opt to decline if you like.

Third: You don't want to Zune? Well tough titties! You know that little user guide (aka instruction manual) that came with your phone? Well have a look-see, Zune is more than just a piece of software to accompany media players. It provides many useful features for managing your phone, features which are completely independent of audio playback.

I hear what you're saying Kevin, and I understand, however I believe your concerns are ill-founded based upon my own direct experience of using the Zune software in conjunction with the phone. There had to be _some_ software component, at least PC users get a much better name for that software than "Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac" :)

Microsoft explains Windows 7 Phone phantom data cockup

Tzael

Re: Got to assume

I make use of the Facebook integration quite a bit with my Omnia 7, can truthfully say that data usage since October when I got my phone has been quite low (less than 30 megabytes per month with no escalation over time).

I'm careful with apps though. Each app shows the information and features it needs to access when viewed in the apps marketplace, if an app piques my curiosity but requires access to my location, my identity or my phone's identity despite obviously not requiring it then I won't install the app. A lot of the free games do this, thankfully the Xbox Live games don't require access to personal or phone identities.

I'm tempted to point the finger at mobile operator apps. I uninstalled the Orange apps on day one, partly because their first iterations refused to work over wifi (wanted to use mobile data connection instead). Whatever the cause at least it's been identified and Microsoft have stated that they're working with the third party in question to resolve the matter.

Will Windows on ARM sink Windows Phone 7?

Re: The .NET framework should help here, unless they're stupid

Thanks for bringing up an important point that is often overlooked. Microsoft's .NET is definitely the solution to the perceived problem outlined in this article. Not just .NET (whoops, for a moment that said .NEWT), but XNA and Silverlight too. These are APIs available across the board, and regardless of the core operating system any applications developed for Windows Phone 7 will port with great ease to the main Windows platform.

Microsoft's strategy over the last decade or so has led them to a point where developers can target common APIs available on the majority of Microsoft platforms without worrying about the underlying kernel or hardware abstraction layer. That's good in my opinion.

Otellini sees a future where the aging x86 architecture can be the heart of mobile phones, and at the rate technology shrinks and power requirements are reduced that is entirely feasible. It's very plausible that one day phones will run full-blown Windows but with a specialised UI based on .NET. In the meanwhile WinCE and its latest incarnation WP7 will be just fine for the mobile market.

Spot on GeorgeTuk. The same people who do not understand the need to copyright work and protect an individual's creativity are probably going to be storming in here and downvoting anything that slightly hints at being pro-copyright. They just don't get it.

If I could suggest one improvement to copyright it would be additional protection and advantages for individual creative artists, instead of protection for the publishers who pocket over 90% of the profit.

Re: I Recommend You Read

Nice try, firstly the section describing quoted strings (3.2.4) pertains to subject, header and body content, not email addresses. Secondly the quotation marks are used to encapsulate special characters such as backslash and others that will interfere with header structure. You telling me that email addresses can contain backslashes (as described in the quoted strings section) now?

You couldn't come up with a valid and widespread implementation of SMTP server that supports spaces in email addresses, you haven't been able to specifically quote a section of RFC5322 that backs up your claim, and you haven't provided a valid example of an active email address that contains a space.

Anti-MS troll, please step away from the bullshit! Mind you, with the smell of all that BS I now understand why you're hiding behind the AC moniker :P

Tzael

Re: 135,000 were given away though...

There was a claim made that eventually all Microsoft employees would be given a WP7 device. Go speak to Microsoft employees, you'll get a very different picture about the number of employees who have actually received a WP7 device for themselves.

Oh and it wasn't 135,000 that was claimed to be given away, it wasn't even the 89,000 that was associated with the original press reports of the claim. The 89,000 was based upon number of employees, where'd you pluck 135,000 from?

Tzael

Re: Hate To Point Out The STANDARDS

I recommend you go read sections 3.4 and 3.4.1 of RFC5322. According to the very specification you have cited email addresses should not contain spaces.

If you're determined to push forward your claim, care to point out a) an existing email address that contains a space; and b) a widely deployed SMTP server solution that actively supports spaces in email addresses.

Anti-MS troll, meet reality.

Tzael

Re: Just a few things to sort out

Hate to point out the obvious but email addresses can't contain spaces. When you enter your Exchange login details on a WP7 device you are prompted for your email address, password, and if no Exchange domain is automatically discovered on the local network then it will also prompt you for the domain name.

Maybe your IT manager is trying to type in their Active Directory username (i.e. domain\username) despite the text box on the phone specifically asking for an email address?

Anyhow thanks for giving me a chuckle, I honestly don't know why your IT manager could get it so badly wrong given what's written on the phone's screen during the process of adding an Exchange account - maybe you should get him a guest part in the BOFH chronicles? ;-)

Re: Not a failure?

Expensive? Nope, can pick up a WP7 phone as part of a £25pm contract. Expensive is a £35pm contract and having to pay for the phone on top. How much did your iPhone cost you, please include the cost of the contract as well as the cost of the phone itself ;-)

Incompatible with Microsoft enterprise software? Perfect synchronisation with Outlook and Sharepoint for starters, with seamless Exchange integration. Apps can communicate directly with instances of MS SQL Server. What other Microsoft enterprise software do you feel the vast majority of consumers need their phone to interact with?

If you need to ask what Microsoft's unique selling point is then maybe it's worth you going to your local mobile phone store and testing out a WP7 device? You're not going to do that though are you? Well for what it's worth the 2 unique selling points of WP7 (imo) are the seamlesss desktop integration and the availability of Zune Pass, an "as much as you can eat" style of music service. I understand not all regions have the Zune Pass option so as a back-up selling point it has to be the "in-got what I need-out" usage of the phone.
