stupid windows 10

I upgraded a fresh install of Windows 7 to Windows 10 on the weekend. I made the blatently stupid mistake of having an ethernet cable plugged in whilst doing the upgrade. Apparently the windows installer thinks this means I don't want to use wireless...EVER! That's right, I can no longer turn on my wireless!. The correct driver for the wireless is installed, I've tried most the solutions I found on the internet without luck. The correct solution, it seems, is to roll back to Windows 7, and do the upgrade again but without the ethernet cable attached. Did I mention I bought a brand new SSD to put Windows 10 on?

Canadians taking to spying on their spies

Trevor is way over inflating how much the average Canadian cares about the election and the issues surrounding it. The reality is that barely 50 percent of eligible voters will even bother to show up at the polls. These "hotbeds" of political discussion Trevor makes reference to are likely nothing more than already disenchanted, semi-radical types who hate absolutely anything to do with Steven Harper and the conservatives. But he is right about one thing, the NDP look poised to form their first national government ever, largely at the expense of the Liberals. As long as they don't start spouting radical leftist nonsense and Mulcair keeps his “Angry Tom” persona under wraps, They stand a very good chance of winning.

P.S. I hate Bill C-51 as well.

Oracle waves fist, claims even new Android devices infringe its Java copyrights

Johnny Canuck

It seems to me

... that, given androids growth, and the judgement that it does infringe, then Oracle might br better off NOT trying to limit its uptake or ban current stocks. Maybe they'd get an extra 1 billion infringements to claim against.

Bill Hicks: 25 years on from the cult comedian's big break

Johnny Canuck

Honestly, I don't recall ever seeing him. When you consider that the "Just for laughs" Montreal comedy festival is on 2 or 3 times a day, you'd think that couldn't be. Even when they do "best of..." stuff he's not there. I watched the first video and found him mildly amusing by today's standards. That said, comedy is a very subjective thing. After all, some people just love fart jokes and slapstick.

I was considering a Raspberry Pi for the job of hammering torrent users on my network, but this looks way better. I administer a wireless network in a large rooming house (90 users). Presently I use a cheap computer to monitor network traffic for torrents and redirect that traffic and any subsequent traffic to 127.0.0.1., forcing the offender to come to the office to get de-listed from my ban-hammer. Its for our protection as we are a small internet provider.

Regarding youth in general, well, the more things change...

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”

Mortal Kombat: Brawler gaming's quintessential gorefest

Johnny Canuck

I remember the first time I saw Mortal Kombat in the arcade. I was walking through with a friend and just happened to glance over at a crowd around one of the games just as Sub Zero pulled the spine out of his opponent. The image was so shocking (for the time) that for some reason I burst out laughing. Then I watched, mesmerized, for a good 45 minutes as the players performed fatality after fatality. How they got so good so fast is beyond me. Anybody ever hear of planting expert players in an arcade to drum up interest in a game?

People who are poor and have been so for some time develop tastes and habits that are a result of their situation - basically its all they've ever known. Hey, America. Canada's watchdog just slapped net neutrality rules on wireless internet

Johnny Canuck

OT I know but the AC who posted 4 hours ago about our "mission" in the Middle East is partially mistaken. We have 2 missions in the area. One is to bomb ISIS targets from the air in support of Iraqi troops - everybody know about this one and its going as advertised. The other is to train and advise Kurdish troops. The second one is the cause of the controversy because our people came under fire from ISIS and returned fire - engaging in combat. The mission is to "train and advise" and by defending themselves, some people see that as an escalation of that mission without proper debate in Parliament.

A general's tale of the US's Gulf War follies and Glyn Johns' life in music

Johnny Canuck

please...

The western powers gelded themselves when they invented and prosecuted the Nazis' for war crimes. I have no love for Nazis or any fascist regime, but by being so eager to prosecute and punish their enemies for the made up crime of "war crimes" we have essentially taken away our ability to win a war. By not punishing the entire population of our enemies we have essentially given them safe haven. Our enemies do not distiguish between civilian and military targets - to them both are equally valid. Yet under our "enlightened" "rules of engagement" we must put our soldiers in imminent peril before they can actually shoot at the enemy!

This is all the result of politicians (lawyers and businessmen) trying to engage an enemy without sustaining any negative publicity. They see the miltary as a monlith, not individual soldiers with families and children. They are unable to engage with the soldiers - the military is just a tool.

TLDR: You can't win a war unless you kill so many of your enemy that they fear for their very survival as a family/community. When you invent laws that stop you from doing that, you will nevr "win".

Water???? Ice????

Appears to be mostly rock and dust. This completely blows away the theory that comets are mostly ice and that said comets deposited mega-tons of water when they (allegedly) impacted the Earth. Seems like more study is needed and this latest data will help somewhat with our own origins.

"TROLL" It has been the scientific CONSENSUS that comets deposited all our earthly water and now that seems less likely.

Johnny Canuck

I haven't played with this tablet in about six months, but I may have a rooted, malware infested 7 inch tablet, or I may have the most secure android tablet I've ever seen. I don't know because I've been unable to get root. If I install root utilities it seems to go well, but every rootchecker says I don't have root. Flashing the flash memory with a newer OS simply doesn't work. I've installed a new ROM on a couple android tabs and everything went well, but this one refuses to cooperate. If I didn't already own an ipad and another android tab, then I'd forget about it. But damn, I should be able to crack it.

What do you mean, I have to POST a PHYSICAL CHEQUE to get my gun licence?

Johnny Canuck

Here in Canada, with 90% of the land area being wild amd hosting a variety of predators capable of killing a human (black bears, brown bears (grizzlies), wolves, coyotes, rattle snakes, sasquatch, we have no problem issuing licenses for long guns. Hand guns are basically illegal in Canada so only the criminals own them. The fact that Canadians own legal rifles/shotguns has not deterred the RCMP fromn trying to confiscate them, even using a flood as a pretense to break into peoples homes and steal their weapons. Governments SHOULD fear the populace rising up - voting doesn't seem to be keeping them in check.

cheap shit

Having spent a good deal of time being utterly poor (divorce, if you must know), I can testify to the futility of buying cheap. Instead of buying decent shoes for $100.00, that last a couple of years, I bought cheap $30.00 dollar shoes that failed after a couple months.

Also. cheap computer crap is just that - cheap! And it will fail soon after buying it.

I have used my knowledge of the cheapness/failure ratio to convince my bosses (2 brothers) to forget about the cheapest price.

You sell better shit to your clients, and they will give you repeat business.

Of course, even though this is fairly obvious, it continues to escape the noitice of the idiots who actually run things.
