5 Nigerian gangs dominate Craigslist buyer scams

Tom 35 Silver badge

Re: an easy solution...

It can take weeks before the bank decides to take back the money.

Work from home scams in Canada have had people cash cheques and wire the money to the scammer (less 20% for your time).

If it's a fake company cheque with all the correct account info it can take the company a week or two to object to the charge and the bank to come after you for the money.

Don't forget video. It didn't take too long for the DRM on music to go away, and I think they had an offer to upgrade any DRM music you had bought, but Video content is still DRMed to your iTunes / Apple device (and it's the same crap anyplace else to be fair).

I'm sure they don't have to take down the site, it's all part of the fake manufactured shortage, gota have it on the first day, line up now dog and pony show they do every year.

Just had a look out the window here, no lineup on the street. Has not been a lineup here for the last few apple hype days I think people just order online.

Almost all of it is going after the low hanging fruit of non-google app sources full of apps of dubious origin that have to be side loaded.

The biggest problem with the google app store is most of the apps are just crappy or don't even work.

Re: Search Results that Contain new Search Engines are crap

If you searched for a manual or driver Google used to send you to fake search sites that always had what you searched for even if you just make it up, but would just send you to ad filled pages that claimed the the thing you wanted was just one more click away.

That and the shopping comparison sites with 20 different domains all linked to the same crap data.

Bing used to be better for that type of search, but it got much worse, and google got better.

It has some use. If you try to swipe it on a terminal that supports chip it will tell you to insert the chip. So if anyone skims the mag strip they will only be able to use it on a terminal without chip support.

Tom 35 Silver badge

"suspension of disbelief finally broke that a lizard could transfer oxygen back out of its blood and into its lungs in order to then breathe that oxygen into a human."

That's exactly what can happen. If you fill your lungs with oxygen free gas (like helium at a party) the oxygen in blood will defuse from your blood back into your lungs, and you pass out in seconds. There is no active transfer going on in the lungs, it's just diffusion from higher concentration to lower.

US Copyright Office rules that monkeys CAN'T claim copyright over their selfies

Tom 35 Silver badge

Re: Too Late Now

Even if (a big if) this applied to automatically triggered photos, the National Geographic article would still be copyright and add value over just a bunch of photos.

I remember a story (think it was National Geographic) about a chimp that was taught to use a polaroid camera. The actual low quality photos (that would be public domain) were a very small part of the story.

It's still not luck

" They are all "lucky accidents". A wildlife photographer once told hme he's lucky if he gets one good action shot out of 50."

If you give the same camera to Joe on the street you would need luck to get one good shot in 1,000. It's not luck, it's just hard.

Luck can be involved, I have a photo with bird feet at the top, and cat paws at the bottom. It was just a bird when I started to press the shutter, but I still pressed the shutter not the cat.
