Toronto city is investigating pumping cold water from the bottom of Lake Ontario to use in cooling office towers. Problem with that and this scheme is the turnover in deep lakes is not very fast. It is quite possible that in 20 years all T.O or the Swiss will have is warm lakes.

Whereas if the rover trundled across some named substance of no particular or important location one does not say it trundled across the substance, but rather across substance or some substance.

To wit: the martians managed, when no one was looking, to place oil in the rover's way to make it's tyres slippery.

NASA spokesperson would say: "The rover trundled across oil and now it's tyres are very slippery", or perhaps "The rover trundled across some oil and now it's tyres are very slippery".

Spokesperson would not say "The rover trundled across the oil and now it's tyres are very slippery", as that implies NASA knows where the oil is. Further one might then ask NASA if this is the Black Oil of X Files fame and if so when will it arrive here? NASA, and indeed the entire USA gov't, are deeply commited to denying the existence of black oil.

My Windows sysadmin friends tell me that with every new release of Windows, of Exchange, of SQL Server their Powershell scripts break because the new release exports new & different COM/COM+/DCOM interfaces.

If UNIX (Linux, *BSD, what have you) broke BASH scripts with every major kernel release, well, I suppose you would see a lot of hate leveled at *NIX. But such breakage in *NIX-land has not happened...

Microsoft new Windows release strategy:

1. Rename all the APIs and SDKs.

2. Rename all the control panels.

3. On the server end: everything that was a control panel is now a plugin: everything that was a plugin is now a control panel.

4. Make all the management windows fill a percentage of area of screen area in proportion to recieved bribes from the various LCD panel makers.

Yes M$ makes a decent app server OS. But it insists on re-obscuring & re-obfuscating reliable old stuff that Windows has done well for 20 years on every new release. Why? I can only conclude, after 20 years in the biz, that M$ believes it's bread is buttered by a constant stream of new sysadmins and old ones that must pay for the MS cert piece of paper.

Whereas once you know NFS or POSIX threads, well, you know NFS or POSIX threads. People who've been around a while know a snow job when they see it. MS does a snow job every release - it gets tired and obvious after a while and that pisses people off. That's not hate, brother, that's anger. There's a difference.

It's worth knowing that KDE3.5 is still available for OpenSuSE thru 12.1, and supported by same.

I don't know if KDE 3.5 had API instability that you describe: I never coded GUIs using KDE. However 3.5 is at least functional and it predates all the semantic desktop crap infecting KDE4.x.

The amounts are not staggering, given the willingness of the USA to pay for stealth bombers, aircraft carriers, and so on. A Saturn V is not nearly as complex as a Spirit bomber, the pricetag for a Saturn V would be much smaller than for a Spirit.
