Android passes iPhone in mobile ad race

nsld
Paris Hilton

Its about the OS not the hardware

Your confusing the hardware choice with the OS used.

If you add up the OS figures you can clearly see that the Android OS is clearly more heavily used than the Apple OS.

Remember, an iPhone is a device, but Android is an OS.

Google battles Derby cops over access to Street View data

nsld

not completely correct.

The public listing of google inc for cartography with the ICO lists that they collect images of people in public places and that the exemption for law enforcement is included so if plod wanted a picture of the person they can have it on request.

A car is not a person and the registration is personally identifiable information so the exemption in terms of the ICO registration doesnt apply to the picture of the vehicle registration. Hence the need for the court order.

You also have to consider that this is what a defence lawyer would call a fishing expedition, there is no evidence of any illegal activity in the image.

Microsoft 'maintenance' blocks Hotmail

nsld
Badgers

Did you actuallty read what I posted?

Or is it just the classic sysadmin knee jerk job saving reaction?

Lumping any and all web based provisions under one banner is nothing short of basic ignorance really.

A SaaS provider can only prosper as a business if data security and integrity is its number one core value.

If you think that what hotmail offers is the same as a subscriber based Software as a Service platform you really need to get out more.

Hotmail is free and not MS core business so customers can suck up a 4 day outage, if Hotmail was MS core business do you think you would see the same?

"Onsite data storage does indeed have its pitfalls, but they are well known, and solutions are widely available. And remote management tools make it easy for suppliers to IT-illiterate market sectors to keep them running for them."

So the IT illiterate are going to pay for secondary and tertiary backup and failover, fire retardation, generators plus an outsourced IT company to keep the server running. Lets hope those IT illiterate companies have enough turnover for all that otherwise they are screwed!

For a lot of companies it comes down to economics as well, pay us $70 per month to get more than above or pay what for the above in your world?

nsld

The lining on your cloud is proportional to what you pay for it,

Everything web seems to get bundled under "the cloud" as if its one mega server sitting somewhere, the reality is you get what you pay for when it comes to the issues of security that you raise.

You buy into a SaaS platform which is the primary business of a provider its got to both work and be secure for that company to survive.

On the flipside, a free or near free service like Hotmail which is not exactly Microsofts core business is not going to be operated in the same manner.

It also comes down to scale, you need a lot of infrastructure to run these "free" services so are the providers likely to use the best kit and methods? Whereas a company dependent on SaaS clients paying subs isnt going to last if it doesnt.

Onsite data storage has its pitfalls as well, I work for a company that used to sell installed software and went cloudy in 2005, our market place (fitness, yoga, pilates) are not renowned for IT skills and pre 2005 the data loss and other issues associated with local data storage was a real problem. Since we went SaaS this has made a huge difference as clients cannot lose data and they can break computers or have them stolen and simply go back online with a new box and its all ok.

Disconsolate Spanish smokers driven out into blizzard

nsld

The only problem with your figures is that they dont add up

You have taken a far too simplistic look at the cost of smoking to the NHS and the net contribution of smokers to the pot.

If we assume that from a packet of 20 at £5 per pack £4 is tax and multiply that by 365 the typical smoker pays about £1460 a year in tax.

In medical terms you have a term called the golden hour when someone suffers a heart attack, that golden hour costs the NHS £60,000 to treat one heart attack, the after care is even greater. You would have to smoke 20 a day for 41 years to pay for the first hour of your treatment!

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease costs a fortune and you can live for years in a semi disabled state on oxygen all the time costing the benefits system and the NHS with no net contribution. Have a heart attack and survive and your even less economically viable.

Lung cancer survival rates arent great either so that analogy isnt too strong either.

All in all smokers cost more than they generate in both tangible and intangible costs to society.

nsld
FAIL

enjoy you say?

I was in Kaprun in November and really didnt like the smoke filled bars, as a result we actually drank less out and spent less money as a result.

I was shocked at just how much difference the smoking ban has made, in my youth it was accepted that you would come home smelling of smoke.

Its a shame, the skiing was great but I wouldnt go back for the nightlife.

ICO waves stick at climate boffins over FoI compliance

nsld
Alert

The problem is two fold.

The first issue is that the climate is indeed changing, but not in a way that merits the taxation attributable to "global warming" when its clear the average global temperature is faliing.

We had global warming to bring us out of an ice age, perhaps we are heading back that way, the problem is they cant tax us on the planet getting cooler so its better to hide this away and massage the figures and results for the public as a whole.

The second issue is scientific arrogance, much the same as when the Labour governments "research" on DNA retention turned out to nothing but a sham and fabrication, the hope was the wider public wouldnt notice and the researchers involved would get away with it. When governments fund research and scientists make up results the public will lose what little faith they have.

I dont get this bit

I can see why he didnt want to get prosecuted and its a stretch to say that subscribing to a website encourages others to distribute as its a chicken/egg argument as to what came first. but its pretty clear from the evidence collected that there where grounds for reasonable suspicion that he had subscribed to some dubious stuff.

I did find this point interesting (Its paragraph 38)

"There was only one issue of fact relating to the specific transactions ascribed to the appellant on which Dr Sharples and Mr Bates disagreed. Dr Sharples told us that, while it was possible for an Internet user to disguise his IP address, it was not possible for him to assume the IP address allocated to someone else, and specifically Freeserve. In other words, if the Landslide computer recorded that it had been accessed from a Freeserve proxy server, it had been."

I might be misreading this but if you can disguise your IP address, whats to stop you disguising it as one that comes from a Freeserve proxy?

Over to the proper tech heads to explain that one.

I also wonder at the courts view that webmasters wouldnt engage in fraud, I suspect that Visa/Mastercard would disagree with that.

You would be shocked

How many have barely any contingency planning for failures and are loaded with single points of failure.

The rule should be triplicate for everything but that costs money and the "it wont fail cos its good kit" mentality never takes into account the idiot unplugging the wrong cable or other organic interventions like road repairs taking out connectivity.

Any SaaS offering worth it salt should have immediate failover along with secondary and tertiary offsite backup as well so the issue these guys had would take a chain of events to achieve as opposed to one event or one kit failure.

nsld

eh?

If I read the story correctly they had a data centre issue so its not the software per se thats the problem its the DR and associated systems that have collapsed.

Doesnt bode well for the customers if the provider's current DR is that poor when they go over to a web platform.

Well as they announced we can roam between t mobile and orange from the 5th of October dont you think they ought to make a start given thats 5 days away?

So whats the excuse for the appalling network performance if its not trying to bring them together?

nsld
Paris Hilton

You are kidding!

Orange customers are already experiencing massive disruption as they try and merge the two networks.

Days with intermittent data backhaul (full HSDPA signal but no traffic), calls that wont connect, total loss of data services in major areas.

I used to be an ardent promoter of Orange but over the last few months its been shocking and the overall attitude of customer service has varied from exceptional to excruciating, especially when the network falls over.

If you want compensation for no service you have to call in but when the network dies you cant get through to register.

If you ask for reasons why there has been an outage (including the recent three day one) they will deny it happened!

Its not a case of it may get worse, its already bad and can only get worse as they do merge fully.

Extreme porn law on the ropes

nsld

The deeper issue

is who gave the plod the tip off with regard to child porn?

My bet is that he has been involved in child custody/access stuff in the family courts and someone decided the best way to not allow him access was to make the allegation.

He needs to make a complaint to the police that the initial allegation was malicious and if he was engaged in family court proceedings then the making of the malicious allegation becomes an offence of witness intimidation as well.

As for the issue over not seeing his daughter, thats a standard bail condition and very hard to overturn, hence why its used to such good effect by women who make false criminal allegations.

As for the CPS, bunch of incompetents as was his defence lawyer for the guilty plea as well.

Is that a lot of our customers use Apple computers, iPhones etc and have been total fans until now but the ariel, proximity and other issues have really made them unhappy and many have returned them and gone back to the 3gS
