Secret spaceplane...
...my arse! Look at the pic again, quite obvious the entire thing is housed in a Lego shell...

Clearly, the patent isn't in the 'hey look, we tilted a screen!' bit. *Look* at the diagram, it's a concept of having a monitor at arms length, or a tablet at your fingertips - ie it's doesn't just tilt back, it drops forward and down as it does so. It's a 'so-simple-it's-obvious' development as the Reg says, but it's the key to making a desktop touch-friendly. I haven't seen any other screens that do this.
My missus gets frustrated just by OSX. She's a typical user in that she doesn't like change. I tried introducing Ubuntu 6.10 one time and nearly got lynched! :-) But... she says her iphone is easy to use, and only gets frustated by the 'too small' screen. So... for lightweight home use, web browsing, photos etc, what do you think would get least resistance if I wanted to introduce a new device to our home? All this article tells me is that if I buy one, it will be able to do stuff I'm interested in as well.
Elsie made a lot of good points, and people slating the ipad are barking up the wrong tree. Check out the rumoured resolution of the Samsung Galaxy tablet - sounds like other manufacturers are finding out that making these 'crap, useless toys' isn't that easy after all. Who knew?!
I'm an iPhone user. I'm out of contract but in light of dodgy antennas and iAds, thought I would check out Android. Surf on over to htc.com, to be confronted by a gazillion similar-looking phones with enticing but completely uninformative names - Wildfire, Desire, Incredible. Some have 'Sense'. No idea what that means. Most are big on social networking (I'm not), but I can't for the life of me tell which one is for me. I hear people going on about the 'Evo', but I can't see that on the UK site. I make a mental note of one that simply looks nice enough (very scientific), and Google it. Apparently it's aimed at the lower end of the market, and teenagers. Stuff that. I want ease of use, powerful, diverse apps, a good display, a good media player, web browser etc etc. Guess what? If I go back over to Apple, I can tell at a glance which phone is going to do that best for me. With a bumper, granted, but hey, I use a cover anyway.
So I'm back where I started.
Ignore the conclusions and reality won't go away, but it might be completely different to the conclusions.
Put another way, I know that the flying spaghetti monster will descend upon the UK next week, and use his noodly appendages to kill the global warming zealots. I won't share my reasons for this prediction, but your ignoring it won't make reality go away...
Someone needs to grow a pair in dealing with these idiots. Submarine? Great, assuming you're prepared to torpedo the f***ers! Just listening? WTF?
Clearly, some shipping companies are getting the idea, judging by the report of pirates being repelled by an armed security team.
Icon, obviously.
I watched the budget updates and my laymans view was that it appeared pretty fair and reasonable. Glad to see that a more in-depth analysis has come to the same conclusions. Ok, so the author probably has his own biases rooted in the ASI, but all the arguments against the budget so far have come from foaming-at-the-mouth idiots like Harriet Harman and a load of morons that were out protesting yesterday before anything had even been announced.
As an aside, the price rises due to VAT should be the same levels as the price reductions that we saw when Brown made that pointless temporary change. Would anyone like to bet how much *more* retailers will manage to add onto prices?!
Congratulations to the lobbyists indeed.
As for targeted pricing that determines if I would be willing to pay a higher price - go for it, because as soon as I get a sniff of you using such a thing, you'll never see my money again, regardless of the price.
Or, to put it another way, that sounds like a lovely scheme for driving away the more affluent customers from your business. Way to go.
"The sounds will be required to present not only location information to those who hear them, but also provide feedback on the vehicle's speed and rate of acceleration"
I know, why not make it go brmmm, brmmm?! You know, with revs and everything?!
There, provided your consultancy for you - can I haz 1 million pounds now plz?
As for customisable sounds not being allowed - I'll give it 72 hours for a software hack to be devised once a few mischievous types have a crack at it.
Have you tried recorded delivery? At least that way you can legally offload the responsibility for the docs onto them.
It's maddening when they insist that you're responsible if something doesn't make it through the mail. However, there was some case that I read about recently where the magistrate declared that this wasn't enforceable.
I suppose a strongly worded solicitors letter is another option - perhaps to the complaints dept or whatever.
"...providing the developer with a better revenue share model could go a long way toward promotion of that particular distribution channel and thus growth of market share for a technology.”
Um, yeah, because the current model has really stifled growth and market share for Apple, hasn't it?
Maybe this would help the non-Apple app stores, but then your use of 'Apple' in the headline would be pointless, wouldn't it?!
Sounds like they were enjoying themselves from the sound of this.
I recently had a visit from 2 well-mannered GMP officers, accompanied by an arrest warrant served by the met. Who are 200 miles away. For a suspect with a different middle name to mine. And a different birthday. And a different physical description. etc etc. They were polite and showed some common sense when confronted with the fact that I clearly wasn't the wanted man, but I'm not sure that the same could be said for their Met counterparts.
Yes, and you also read the register, which probably means that the uber-dumbphone angle of this review isn't aimed at you. This would be aimed at the likes of my Gran, who I can assure you doesn't surf the net, snowboard etc. So, don't be offended by what is a very valid angle - most of the people reading the reg will regularly get asked by relatives about all things related to technology.
Sounds like some of the commenters here seem to have only read the Reg's take on this - have all of you actually read the open letter? It makes far more sense than I had expected.
Here's one of the most salient points - flash objects use mouseover/rollover a lot, but that entire concept doesn't exist on a touchscreen, so necessitating a port or conversion to be idevice compatible anyway - so if you need to rewrite it, why not in html5? No-one's saying it has to be an app, that it has to be through the app store, or that it has to make money for Apple.
The first commenter says that it should be his choice whether to implement a particular feature or not - that's precisely correct, it should be. Job's point is that if Apple has to wait for Adobe to implement support for Apple features (which, let's be fair, Adobe doesn't have a good track record on), it isn't your choice, it's Adobes.
Apple's point about Adobe being interested in cross-platform apps, not Apple apps, leaves Apple in a no-win predicament for the trolls on the reg - his point was that any innovative features unique to one platform (Apple or otherwise) won't be taken up until ALL (or at least the majority) of the supported platforms have that feature. So, if Apple enforces this rule in the interests of innovation, you lot cry out at evil Apple, but if Apple don't enforce this rule, a lot of the device-level innovation never sees the light of day, and you lot will cry out that Apple make crap with no innovation. Which is it people?
"Now how’s that for a kick in the pants: we need Microsoft around to make sure the market has some competition. My word how times have changed..."
Good grief, kick in the pants indeed.
To other commenters who point out that Microsoft is not in the business of consumer devices, I think the point is that they would like to be - but they've not really succeeded. Only the Xbox is really a success device-wise.
If we give it a few years, will MS will a has-been dinosaur like Sun, maybe?
