O2 extends iPhone 4 return-for-refund window

Buy out of your contract

I'm wondering, I seem to recall O2 also offered you the chance to buy yourself out of your existing contract to get an iPhone 4 early. As part of that, you agreed to give up your 14-day cooling off period. Wonder how this affects them, but frankly I reckon if you were foolish enough to stump up that money....

Hmm, would Lucas take the opportunity to further dry-hump his franchise into money spinning ridicule? I'm frankly amazed he hasn't re-re-re-mastered it for blu-ray yet - 3D seems like just the sort of thing he'd do, with all the characters played by Ewoks (apologies to South Park)

Steve Jobs denies Judas Phone antenna problems

Annihilator
Jobs Horns

Admitted, but denied

Well, to paraphrase him, he's saying there isn't a real problem. Or actually, there is, but it's the same as other phones. And it's so much of a non-issue, we're giving away a rubber case to fix the problem that doesn't exist.. Or a refund that you'd be entitled to (in the UK) regardless of what Lord Steve deems appropriate, and a vague answer on what happens if you've bought via AT&T/O2 etc

His claim that problem is due to not enough cases to fit the new design, shurely we'd have seen the same effect with the original iPhone and the 3G?

One question though - what changes after 30th September that a free case is no longer required?...

Yes, it's part of the Fraud Act 2006. Given how recent the law is, I really think a defence of "I didn't know" is quite a good one. Using me as the yardstick, I didn't know.

Interestingly, I can't find any evidence of it being illegal in "real" auctions, which @pete 2 alludes to. I find that very very odd indeed.

Weirdest law

As I recall, his defence was that he didn't realise shill bidding was illegal. I'll be honest, I didn't know this until reading this case.

Seems a rather crazy law to me. Granted it's not very nice (and I'm sure has happened to me), but you choose to keep bidding up to the artificially high price...

3D TV: Avatar or Ishtar?

Annihilator

Good call

It's also trying to force the 3-D effect only via binocular cues. Completely misses the monocular cues, which is one of the reasons for the headaches. One example of monocular cues is depth perception via your focus shifting (accommodation).

Frankly, I think the "3D" efforts in cinemas are fucking awful.

Annihilator
Thumb Down

"Do punters really want it?"

In a word - "no". Frankly I think the 3D solution (though as pointed out already, it's stereoscopic, not 3D) is appalling. The problem I've got is that I can't get on board with what is effectively dressing up to watch my TV and without the special glasses the image is useless.

Cinema can just about get away with it, but in my own home, the TV does NOT command my full attention at all times.

Bring in proper 3D without any glasses and we'll talk. Until then, it's a gimmick and can die a slow painful death for all I care.

Thoughts

My thoughts:

* The iPhone 4 is definitely more susceptible to attenuation as demonstrated by Anantech - crippling so, I don't think so

* Attenuation does indeed happen on every phone. On testing today, I've discovered that my old Sony Ericsson w800i experiences a drop of 20dB from being on the desk to picking up and holding "naturally", 25dB with a "death grip"

* The bars are demonstrably skewed the wrong way - a 20dB drop would have a devastating effect on this

Despite this coming across as defending Apple, I do believe that it is incredible that they've gone from denying all problems with it, to saying "ooh it's software" while not acknowledging that the aerial design is not the best idea they've ever had. It is rather insulting to say the least - but it's also PR spin.

Apple denies iPhone 4 antenna glitch, blames inaccurate signal bars

Annihilator

@Eponymous Howard

Hey. I'm not saying I don't agree with Apple, I'm saying quite a few loons will claim it's bollox - see this forum for details ;-)

Annihilator
Boffin

Or specifically

They're saying that a signal drop of 10-20dB (which can be considered "normal") can be unfairly represented as a 2-bar drop in signal, which is not a true assessment of the situation.

Annihilator

Variance

Perhaps, but I've just tried this in a number of phones and the worse example I can find is a Sony Ericsson w800i (TechMode activated by *585*0000#) which shows a 20dB loss from "no grip" to "grip" - identical to the iPhone4's loss and without the same media hoo-haa. In fact this was generally a brilliant phone.

Equally, have tried it on an iPhone 3G (FW 3.1.3) which shows a 13dB loss using the Field Test menu, much "worse" than the 3GS apparently is.

I think it's fair to say that attenuation can vary by as much as 20dB in *any* phone, depending on conditions, user etc.
