Re: Paula Scher is the Principal at Pentagram

Sam Moreau is the writer of the blog from which the information in this article was taken, so he has been given 'credit', as he ought to be according to established standards.

If you look carefully at the article, the word 'blogged' is in a mid-blue font. You may have thought that this was a crude attempt at the use of graphic design aspects by the author. It is not, it is an indication of technical functionality. If you click the blue word, you will be taken to the blog which is the source of the article.

In Sam Moreau's blog, Paula Scher is given full credit for the design. So, unlike you, I am sure that she actually did the design. Also, a link is provided to Pentagram (using the magic blue word technique) in case anybody wants to read more about Pentagram.

Personally, I'd be more interested in the team that designed the cardboard box that the computer ships in, because they really are interesting and very useful.

My solution.....

... is to use a Virgin Money prepaid credit card. You load it up by bank transfer (a simple telephone call for me) or via the Virgin Money website. I never have more than £150 on it. I use it for all internet tranactions and for Googly payments (such as Android Market). If the card gets lost/stolen/compromised, I can't lose more than the balance on the card and if I report the loss/theft quickly enough then the card gets cancelled and becomes useless. to anyone.

(For some reason, it won't work on those petrol pumps that take credit cards as noted in the Ts&Cs)

re. latex gloves and touch screens

After about 0.5 seconds of thought, I was sure you were wrong about cap-sense touch screens not working with latex gloves. I've just tried operating the screen of my HTC Android phone while wearing latex gloves - it works fine, and it has a screen protector on it as well.

UK gov rejects call to posthumously pardon Alan Turing

frank ly Silver badge

A Pardon...

..(in the UK) removes the penalty but does not remove the record of the conviction. You are confusing the conviction and the penalty. It's too late to pardon a man who has served the sentence and died. To remove the criminal conviction, a retrial is required. A pardon can only be given to someone who has been convicted (by definition).

However, sometimes a pardon is given because it's quicker and cheaper than a retrial.

The only use I can think of for a posthumous pardon is to make descendants feel better about their ancestors (as was done in pardoning soldiers convicted of cowardice while actually most probably suffering from shell shock). This didn't stop the execution of those soldiers of course.

It is a fact that Alan Turing broke a law that was in force at the time and so he was treated as people at that time were. I believe his conviction should stand and be worn as a badge of shame by our society. Also, details of his treatment at the hands of the government should be required teaching in schools.

re. 'Home screen horror'

Apart from the wallpaper, that home screen doesn't look too bad. I do like the clock, with alarm indicator, though the day text could be bigger. Does anyone know of a good looking analogue clock with day/date (one that doesn't need internet access or permission to send SMS messages, etc)? I ask because I can't use the HTC analogue clock when I use Launcher Pro on my Incredible.

Kelihos botnet BACK FROM THE DEAD

frank ly Silver badge
Facepalm

It could get tricky

I might be running a 'botnet' that has perfectly legitimate and essential uses (such as monitoring and controlling medical equipment for home care patients) and uses similar techniques to the spam code. If my application code is a commercial secret (of course it is), then how do Microsoft know that a specialised patch to stop the spam botnet wouldn't disrupt my application and screw up many people in a bad way?

(Before anyone says it, I know it should be running on a specialised Linux appliance.)

re. spatula

Being from the UK and in my mid-fifties, I think of scientific and medical careers when I see the word 'spatula'. Could it be that the US usage of the word to mean 'food mixing implement' is causing some misunderstanding? (RIM is a Canadian company so perhaps a Canadian commentard could let us know the usual interpretation there.)

AirDroid

frank ly Silver badge

Nice

I've just installed and used it and it looks very good and since it seems to be a phone-based web server then I can control my Incredible, Wildfire and Vega simultaneously in three different tabs (because I can).

One mildly annoying thing was that I could rearrange the buttons by dragging them, but they returned to their original locations when one of them was pressed, so I won't do it again.

I tried to connect over the WiFi hotspot with mobile data running but this doesn't work (because of Android I think). It would be nice if this did work so you could connect your phone and laptop while away from home.

The AirDroid task manager showed that GTO, GoogleDocs and Dropbox were running on my phone even though the Android Running Services list did not show them. After killing them in Airdroid, they did not show again until I started then stopped them on the phone. Maybe somebody can shed some light on this?
