Radio Society to Ofcom: Hear See you in court

Simon Batley
WTF?

This is not about 'Amateur Radio'

Why or why does everyone go on about Amateur Radio. This has little if anything to do with Amateur radio. This is all about devices which appear to be illegal/non complaint jamming the reception of commercial short wave radio stations and as I have experieinced and heard from others, affecting broadband speeds - especially those of us in more rurual locations with overhead wires.

Don't know about you lot - but when my broadband speed was hit by 20% speed reduction by a PLT user causing suspected intermods in the copper telephone wires as well as getting nose all across the short wave bands - I got Ofcom in to deal with it pretty sharpish and they did...... thank God.

It appears we need a body like the RSGB to force Ofcom to realise what its right and left hand are doing....

Why all this mention of Amateur Radio

I am not sure why there is all this mention of Amateur radio? I complained to Ofcom about PLA interference jamming AM broadcast station reception and possibly affecting my ADSL connect speed - nothing at all to do with Amateur Radio. In response to my complaints Ofcom arranged to have 4 PLA devices removed or ceased within .5 mile radius of my home and

a) I can again listen to my regular shortwave AM programs.

b) My ADSL sync speed improved - although this was never officially linked to the removal of the PLAs- it might have just been a freaky coincidence..........

I am happy now, but I don't know what happened to the removed PLAs, ie whether people got their money back etc

Ofcom might ask you to stop using this if you cause interference

Please be aware that if in using such a PLA device you cause harmful interference to HF radio Ofcom may require you to stop using the equipment unless you can demonstrate you can stop the interference. This has happened to three addresses within a .3 mile radius of me in Suffolk in the last month.

.

Obviously if you do not cause interference from your domestic wiring from using the device then you have nothing to worry about.. but make sure you can get your money back just in case you do - also you might not know you are causing issues - unless you are a HF radio user of course - for many months - so make sure you return window is longer than 28 days, just in case.
