In the loop: how Halo defined a new decade of first-person shooters

MJI Silver badge

Re: Pretty much the only FPS I've played

Lots of games have a story, some excellent, some silly, some pointless.

But I like a good story in a game.

MJI Silver badge

Re: FPS

Yet I can for third person, no problem with Uncharted and so on, but FPS - I just can't do it.

Howver I do like Move supported FPSs - now they are best of both worlds

MJI Silver badge

Controls

Well the multiplayer I normally use has good controls, controller in each hand, point and shoot with right, control the character left. So I can move similar to a traditional controller, but aiming, I have to place the cross hairs over the other person, and pull the trigger. No aim assist, no springing to centre, just hold it stable and shoot them!

Artificial sway is silly and gets on my nerves.

FPS

I missed the early console FPSs as I didn't know much about them. And I didn't think about getting one until the children were old enough for a PS2, my game on that was GT4.

I have played Valve and Id ones on the PC.

I have never played a Halo game, I was going to get a PC one but Game didn't know what to recommend. I think it is the only Xbox exclusive I would be bothered about playing, but not spending a fortune for one series when I have a huge backlog anyway.

You are right it did define the Microsoft console.

From playing other FPS on console I will say I prefer mouse for aiming over a stick, I bought one of the Halo killers for PS2 recently and the controls were not good, the recent PS3 HD version is a lot better. But FPS are usually mouse territory, but keyboard is clunky.

Search engines all failing

OR rather than AND - that really annoys me.

I run greasemonkey scripts to keep private with google. I also use yahoo and a couple of the older search engines. I don't use the German tin plate toy search engine.

But search engines in general are not as good as they used to be.

Re: Far Cry/ Crysis

They are pretty similar by all accounts, apart from the "Can it play Crysis" I don't think there is much special about it. I have the game, but no real fun.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Fallout

I am playing Fallout 3 at the moment,

It may be First person (switchable to 3rd) but FPS no, it isn't.

MJI Silver badge

I've played 4 of those

Wolf3D was fun back when it was current.

Crysis is the most recent I have played of that list and it is OK, a bit so so I think. I have has far more fun with other FPS games, in fact I would put Crysis qhite low for fun.

Currently I am playing the original Half Life on the PC. And a converted to PS3 with trophies PS2 game. As well as my normal multiplayer game.

Re: and 1/100th of the size/quality.

Well boys would want something more interesting when on a long trip, or early evening when the TV is in use, or I am on the PS3. Or on holiday before bed.

Five minute games, they do not interest me either, I want to either sit in front of the TV, or a PC, not a touch screen phone.

Last portable game I played myself was Killzone Liberation, quite fun, 5 minutes or so a level, not a long time, same device was a godsend when I was in hospital last year with Motorstorm Arctic Edge.

My mobile is OK as a camera, but I would not fancy playing a game on it, even though it is a touchscreen smart phone.

Our Game has a Vita on display

And it sells them too - met a few customers while browsing

MJI Silver badge

Re: Perhaps Christmas will help

3DS doesn't interest them now, they are nearly 13 and rarely touch anything Nintendo now (DS and Wiii)

They have tried Wipeout, UC:GA, and a few others in Game.

They would rather play LBP than SMB

MJI Silver badge

Re: Game for Christmas

Well we already have listed to get the following

Uncharted Golden Abyss

Gravity Rush

LBP Vita

AC III Liberation

Little Deviants

(That B&W game)

Unit 13

That is enough to get for now

MJI Silver badge

Games

OK, my favourite games series include Uncharted, where is the phone Uncharted game?

Where is the phone Killzone game? Little Big Planet game?

I would rather play a game with a Nathan Drake or a Sack Boy in it.

Re: World beating

Same aerial same transmitter.

Analogue was not as great as people thought, what is broadcast is NOT what is transferred around in the studios,

Digital definately looked better, much better colour, resolution was similar.

MJI Silver badge

Re: World beating

If digital is worse why was digital TV better at picture than analogue.

I did the head to head quite a few years ago. TV was widescreen and IDTV.

BBC1 on 1 was clear, detailed, looked like a DVD.

BBC1 on 91 was noisy, not widescreen, even with edge enhancement lowered it looked poorer.

Definately not as good now as when it was first introduced, when they still used bit rates at DVD level.

Re: Vaccum maker?

Call a Dyson a Hoover and James will hunt you down, he HATES that term.

MJI Silver badge

Re: re: Have I stumbled into the "Which" forums?

No but we do want clean carpets and clothes you know!

MJI Silver badge

Re: Washing machines

It was the drum bearing, went up a LOT so they stopped making them.

But since they cost a lot people do not like to throw them away.

Ours is getting F13 but the water still gets hot, then spin is OK.

I think we will be taking up the M-I-L offer of a new washing machine, but what do we get?

MJI Silver badge

Re: unwashably clogged

I am, but are you?

MJI Silver badge

Re: Borrowed time

Just had a letter from Dyson today, no more support from mid December, no spares from end of December and an offer of £50 off at Comet if you pay more than £450.

OK El Reg, can we have washing machine reviews please?

Oh and the M-I-L has offered to pay - again.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Is it just me

Don't think so.

I am disappointed at the espionage.

Had products from both happy with both except for the washing machine near EOL and disintegrating fridge freezer plastics

MJI Silver badge

Re: Will Apple be next in line?

I think he means the ballbarrow not the other chap!

Or if he does, learn you Dysons, James is the engineer, and Freeman is Gordons dad.

MJI Silver badge

Re: unwashably clogged

I removed the yellow plastic things filter, it was totally clogged and was not cleaning very well.

It does mean I have to clean the other filters more, but I will stick a new one in sometime.

Stripping the cyclone down every couple of years and airlining it clean helps a lot too.

Our other vacuum cleaner has a bag, never replaced, as it is rarely used dry.

Vax 4000 we use it 90% as a carpet washer, 9% drain unblocker, 1% I could not find the DC02. Also the only vacuum cleaner we have had which needed a holiday in a repair place (pump went).

Dyson products are interesting technically, he makes good use of engineering plastics.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Re - I used to think dyson was a prick...

But unlike you he made the connection and worked for a long time to make it work.

MJI Silver badge

Cyclones

A common concept, been used for Diesel loco air filters, JD saw it on wood saws.

James Dyson is VERY good at thinking of new uses for established ideas. The cyclone vacuum cleaner is so obvious once you see one, but he produced one first.

MJI Silver badge

Re: I can say

Well we would get our washing machine checked but how long before the drum bearing fails and it is scrap.

Never needed support for the vacuums, I just strip and clean occasionally and they keep going.

MJI Silver badge
Unhappy

Re: World beating

At first digital was much better, then they started slashing the bit rate.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Bah!

Ours is fine too, just needs a new foam filter base

So far I have had to strip and clean the cyclone once in all the time we had it, why we got it is funny.

My wife wanted a Dyson we had a DC02 (I think, now in garage, power head worn out, but fine for car), her mum bought a purple newer model, but it gave her back ache as the metal pipe was too short. So she bought something else and my wife grabbed the Dyson.

My wife then extended the metal pipe and it was fine.

We still use it.

3 Dyson products, support can be good, but as before the washing machine is on borrowed time.

I am disappointed with Bosch, they are good enough to do this them selves, why espionage?

MJI Silver badge

Re: I can't say

Our vacuum cleaner is not that new and works well (Dyson)

The CR01 or 02 is about 10 years old, and limps along.

The Fridge Freezer (Bosch) is about 14 years old but the door handles have gone brittle.

MJI Silver badge

Re: That sucks...

Don't know, but they employ a lot more people now

Pity they dropped out of the washing machine market

MJI Silver badge

Re: My wife's washing machine

Well it is, it was a present from her mum, for her, therefore it is her washing machine.

Like a lot of Japanese companies, seem to like working here quite a bit.

They also like working with UK companies.

DIY LPG

I followed COP II, I had it inspected afterwards. It passed.

I have seen very poor professional installs, including routing wiring next to exhaust components.

The you must have a professional install for LPG is rubbish, it is not that difficult, if you can do serious car maintenance you can do it.

Seven years on a DIY install still working, I am happy. I took my time and did it properly, no running wiring under the car, I took it through the insides, I managed to very carefully route the piping and tuck it out of the way.

I know of quite a few DIY installs and they are all a lot better sorted than a lot of professional installs.

A lot of professional installs do not even remove the inlet manifold to drill it, so any swarf that drops in goes in the engine.

Sorry with LPG I am getting it done properly, by me.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Manifold drilling

That was not difficult, took me about an hour.

Re: Are they environmentally friendly?

But they create very little in pollutants.

Don't know about scooters (wouldn't touch them) but my 4 stroke moped was pretty clean.

200mpg on a bad day is what I would call clean, pity it only did about 40

MJI Silver badge

Re: Elephant in the room

I use LPG.

It saves me about £150 a month

As to fitting I prefer DIY

Injection cars are easier the electrical systems piggyback

MJI Silver badge

Re: Are they environmentally friendly?

Very much so, my last one I had did 200mpg on a bad day back in the 70s

The 250cc bikes I used for years would do 60mpg being thrashed and 80mpg at 80mph.

MJI Silver badge

Re: What I find objectionable is

Yes but why do mopeds pay it?

MJI Silver badge

What I find objectionable is

Why these cars which clog the roads up and damage the road surface just like any other car pay no road tax.

I think it is obscene.

Yet a moped has to pay, bloody ridiculous.
