Intel will flush Xeon line with six-core Dunny

@ Ken Hagan

Er, if you know of a way to increase performance that doesn't come under the three broad headings you've just mentioned, do tell....

How about hanging a large FPGA off the side of the processor and handing off tasks to it that can be more efficiently done in hardware.

Oz teen elephant pregnancy sparks protests

Paris Hilton

@ Chaviphant

I think the real horror for the busy-bodies is that Taronga park zoo is in Mosman - this is one of the wealthier (if not the wealthiest) Suburbs of Sydney and It is felt that not only having a nine year old pregnant - but daring to publicize the Fact has bought down the tone of the hole (deliberate typo) suburb and is just not the done thing.

If the zoo had been further west - say at Mt Druitt (a surprisingly flat place) or maybe Dubbo no-one would have commented (except the odd current affairs program - but who watches them anyway)

Paris - Because she is wealthy and brings down the tone.....

Human rights group pleads for condemned Saudi 'witch'

Richard Freeman
Paris Hilton

@ The Saudis already have the GW clan in their pockets

and a decent witch burning is just the thing to help them promote their 'war on terror', or whatever they call it now.

Shame of it is the Saudis preferred method of witch termination is probably a beheading.

Ironically the burning of witches (usually Female) in england largely started because of a reluctance on the part of the authorities to shed the blood of a woman.

Paris - Because none of it makes any sense.....

Cops hunt charred power cable thief

Richard Freeman
Pirate

@I'm baffled as to how they could have survived this

People who tangle with High Voltages often (as in more often than you might expect) survive.

Over about 500V the electricity punctures your skin (which provides Electrical insulation) then most of the current arcs across the soft tissue under the skin to the nearest Handiest earth (or other Current Return path) as a result of this not much current ends up heading deeper into the body to fibrillate your heart.

Of course the arcing current causes considerable localised heating and serious Burns - it is not unusual to lose a limb or two and Death from tangling with High voltages is usually the result of the serious burns the Victim suffers and may take some time - it is not unheard of for people to take a minute or two.

If you wish to commit suicide climbing a high voltage power pole is one of the worst ways to try

Thumb Up

@ Mark

"But then you're basing your opinion upon a report published on a website. If you were a member of the jury, you may find that there is a great deal more evidence than is presented here..."

Mark -That is precisely the point that I am making (well trying to make).

Whilst a large number of people here are screaming that Steven Price deserves the death penalty and that this is an obvious open and shut case - there could easily be other Factors that may make this case less obvious.

While I would accept that on the evidence presented here alone there MAY be a case for imprisonment I cannot accept (merely on the evidence presented in this article) that there is a clear cut case here that justifies execution (as many are claiming).

Richard Freeman
Coat

Clear Cut case? Maybe not....

To everyone who thinks this is a clear-cut and obvious case let me just run through a few thoughts - Note that I do not necessarily think that Steven Price is innocent or guilty but based on the 'Facts' as presented in this Article alone, I believe that there are still other possibilities available.

1) Steven Price admitted to guilt - this is possibly one of the most compelling arguments in favor of his Guilt, however as other folk have pointed out mentally ill people admit to guilt for crimes they have not committed quite often - and if nothing else Steven Price does not seem to be.... well lets say.... mentally stable....

Also if the crime was committed by one of the other people there, like say his Girlfriend/Partner then I would also have to consider the possibility that he may be 'In love' (whatever that means ;-) and is trying to protect her.

2) Steven Price posed with the body.... After the attack - there is no suggestion in this article that the Pictures were taken while the attack was taking place in which case this only provides evidence that Steven Price was involved after the death, it also indicates that there was at least one other person present at the time.

3) DNA etc evidence on the "knife the screw driver and the mobile phone" (Carpet, Bag etc) again this only links the accused to the disposal of these items which only 'proves' that he was involved in the disposal of the body - which has already been established.

4) Witness evidence from Karen and Irene Duncan. lets see now this sounds a bit harder to refute but they are sisters and may be prepared to lie to protect each other - Also they are fairly obviously involved in the murder and it is not outside the bounds of possibility that they are lying to protect themselves and or each other. Think about it a: "'frenzied and sustained knife assault' amounting to at least 80 separate blows." is no means feat and would be likely to be fairly tiring if carried out by a single person - it is possible that two people (two sisters perhaps?) or maybe even three people participated in the attack.

If I was on the Jury would I convict on the strength of all this evidence?

Yes I think the evidence does sound like it could be considered 'Beyond reasonable doubt.' and I probably would convict.

However would I also consider the evidence to be certain enough to sentence Steven Price to death? I think not as despite the obvious nature of this case there are other possible explanations for the 'evidence' given in this Article.

I may caused enough stirring for the moment I think I will get my coat and stand back out of the wind of public opinion for a bit.

USB 'compact cassette' promises 1980s nostalgia, home taping

Joke

I can just see how this happened.....

Scene: meeting of Senior management at Firebox.com.

attending are Senior manager 1 (SM1) Senior manager 2 (SM2) and senior manager 3 (SM3)

SM1 I got a great deal from the Chinese on 6,000,000 64M USB memory sticks. however none of our customers seem interested in them and we cannot sell them for love nor money.

SM2 this reminds me of when I bought up 6,000,000 Blank cassettes in 1994 because they were going cheap at the time - I think we still have them out the back of the warehouse.

SM3 hmmm whipped cream...... love.... unsellable memory sticks.... Cassettes..... money....

I have an idea!

how about we &^@# and *(@(Y@$( and )@#*^%%^.

SM1 and SM2 (together) thats disgusting!

SM2 but you have given me an even better idea! only without the whipped cream this time.....

and so another brilliant marketing scheme was born.....

Dublin designer branches out with 'tree' PC

Paris Hilton

The Idea sounds familiar....

There was an early PC - I forget who made it - Burroughs ? - someone like that anyway

Made in the late 80's early 90s it was a row of boxes that plugged together - CPU, RAM, Disk drive etc.... 8086 based maybe even up to 80286. It looked a lot better than the Ugly thing in the picture at the top of the article.

even the one here looks a lot neater:

http://reviews.cnet.com/4531-10921_7-6629617.html

As for 'future proof' PCs anyone remember the passive ISA bus machines where the CPU was on a plug in card so the CPU and RAM could be easily upgraded? - they didnt last long after PCI came out....

Ukrainian eBay scam turns Down Syndrome man into cash machine

Is it just me or ?

Let me get this straight someone (well two peole actually) purchased a car over Ebay (ok this bit is fine) then they sent a cheque or direct deposit off without actually seeing the car in the flesh as it were?

this sounds strange to me - a couple of suggestions here though:

Do not spend anymore on Ebay than you are prepared to lose and/or for any large purchases use a cashiers Cheque and pick the item up yourself (cashiers cheques can often be stopped and anyway if you pick the item up you do not have to hand the cheque over until you have seen the item)

African human-powered lighting plan announced

Mars

I picked up one of thise things from the hardware store last week

OK it is an ugly looking torch but it has three LEDs and uses an 80mAH NIMH battery and claims about 30 Minutes for a 1 minute wind.

it cost $15 in Australia (which probably makes it about 0:02 from the factory door in china) and seems to work OK of course the light output after 1/2 an hour is getting low but still usable if I had access to a light meter I could do a proper test on it.

Texan boffin fixin' to make cheaper fuel cells

Richard Freeman
Boffin

@Acme Fixer

I disagree, the maths was incorrect - as stated,

O.K, so was the value of platinum - It was valued in the article at $26 per gram and as per my working this works out at $1000-$2000 (this is why I showed my working)

85.675 *0.5*46 = $1970.53

85.675*0.8*46 = $3152.84

The fact that the value of platinum was incorrect in the article does not miraculously make the maths correct and the result being correct is merely co-incidence - the article is still in error - how can you say the maths is correct???

Richard Freeman
Coat

Hang on is this Maths correct?

I must be missing something here:

Platinum $26/G

0.5-0.8G per KW

(not from the Article) 1HP = 745.7W

this makes a 115 HP fuel cell close to 85.675Kw

85.675 *0.5*26 = $1,114.82

85.675*0.8*26 = $1,783.71

either I am missing something or there is a serious rounding error in the Article as I make the amount of Platinum required to be in the order of $1,000 to $2,000 (going by the figures in the Article) I am missing $1,000.

re 500kW is no mean feat

Radars are usually pulsed so the 500Kw quoted is for a very brief period of time and is by no means continuous.

Secondly a microwave transmitter will often use a directional antenna with what is usually referred to as gain - this means that because the antenna is directional with a very low spread, the signal is in the case of say '20dB gain' (not unusually high for a microwave antenna) 100 times more powerful than if the antenna was not directional so the 500KW figure may also take this into account also.

so the Foxbat may have a radar capable of producing 5KW pulses (although modern radars can easily produce pulses much higher than this) into an antenna with 20dB gain which could be claimed at a 500KW output

- looking around the internet although no firm figures or details are given there are suggestions that the Smerch-A or Foxfire was indeed capable of 500KW pulses as claimed by wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mig-25

and

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/single/2222604.html

of course this pulse is for a very brief period of time - well under 1mS probably for mere micro Seconds as a longer pulse would of course blind the radar to returning signals - a very short high power pulse in the order of 10's of kilowatts (if not 100's of kilowatts) is very achievable and has been since WWII.

While I do not know if the short duration of the pulses would be sufficient to kill Rabbits it would certainly be likely to sterilise them (and anyone standing in front of the plane) and wreak havoc to electronic equipment in the area

Lucky Country ????

Oh yes Sydney is about to descend into even more chaos than usual - How Lucky we are.

We have had Blackhawks thundering up Pitt St on anti- terrorist exercises then turning around and thundering down the other way again.

At the moment we have some other helicopter (looks like a police logo on it) Flying around Circular quay and up Pitt st doing goodness knows what.

I am sure we are in more danger from these Helicopters (and so called anti-Terror exercises) than from Terrorists - of course if I was a Terrorist I would not muck about with explosives and stuff I would string a few steel cables between buildings down Pitt st and just wait for one of the Helicopters to run into them or if you wanted to be a bit more sophisticated and still have something go bang throw the cables across when ...... Oh hang on don't want those Terrorist nut-cases to get any ideas.....

Power Generation in NZ

"the more so as the whey distilleries use quite a lot of hot steam, presumably generated by burning fossil fuel as in other biofuel plants worldwide."

Not necessarily so:

Of 41 billion kWh of electricity generated in NZ in 2003, 58% was hydro, 24.5% gas, 7.6% coal, 6.7% geothermal, 2% wind and 1.3% biomass.
