I do recognise aspects of myself in those descriptions; a JOAT edging towards Algorithmicist. I was called a bit twister at one interview, then rejected, even after he said I gave the best definition of an expert system he had heard. I was very upset. Hey! What are you doing in my corner? Are you messing with my computer????? What are you doing? WTF? Get out! OUT! NOW! OUT!!!!! sulk...pout...weep...my...precioussssssessss...

Re: There's your problem...
Let me boil it down to its essence: Assholes are Assholes.
All other factors are purely coincidental and merely provide excuses for being an asshole should the Asshole feel they need them, though Assholes seldom do. They just are. Just being an asshole is generally good enough for an asshole.
Re: There's your problem...
I had a girl friend for a while who was a Seventh Day Adventist, or brought up that way as a child and still called herself as such, and she had no problem with a pagan/heathen/hippy/agnostic/atheist like me and rather liked my long girly hair. In fact she was a lovely woman and far better than I deserved, and in no way an asshole. Assholes come in all flavours including non religious types, and not all religious types are assholes. Some commentards are assholes too.

Isn't the option you're looking for called "The DVD/Blu-Ray"? It seems to fit all your criteria. Buy once, watch whenever? Yep. So buy the DVD, rip it to your disk, and sell on the DVD, or give it to your granny. She'll love you forever.
Otherwise just stay as you are and come to terms with the fact that you and the world don't match or mesh in any significant way. That's what I did. If only big companies catered more to the edges of the bell curve instead of concentrating on the lucrative centre.

RE: "Firefox has that count-down-to-install for installing plugins/extentions"
I think that's a security thing rather than a helpful thing, otherwise they wouldn't bother doing it. It's so that anything with less cognitive ability than a human is less likely to install something behind the users back. A definition which fits several acquaintances.

Google Spanner in the NewSQL works?
Re: SQLITE3
It may be awesome, and I use it often, but an embedded local database engine is not really the same level of technology as a distributed database server. The Jet4 database engine is pretty good too, despite its age, and better at multi user use than SQLite, or was last time I looked, but they are minnows compared to Spanner.

Re: More income that he won't pay Tax on???
@big john "Buffet is a lefty, didn't you know that? He certainly does not represent conservatism in the slightest. So whatever charges HE levels against the right are just partisan bullshite."
I can do syllogisms too. Big John is a Righty. He absolutely does not represent the Left in any way whatsoever. Therefore what ever charges he levels against the Left, or against Buffet, are just partisan bullshit.
You can see the fallacy in your argument, can't you?

RE: "I believe the left is really starting to scare people with their extreme overreaction."
I know, all those scary leftist snowflakes, melting into a limpid puddle at a moments notice, making all right thinking folk lift their frocks in horror of wetness and kitty hats floating off in the water.
Re: For once, I am hoping this is fake news... it's quite silly, actually.
RE: "because Russia- and China-based banks basically own his soul."
Based on Trumps rhetoric I'd guess mostly Russian based banks own his soul. Perhaps China banks own one of his tiny hands.
But, much as I enjoy trashing the way he looks, a part of me cringes that I'm indulging in using a persons appearance to maul him, when what he does and who he chooses to help him do it are much better targets and, what he does has much worse effects on real people than his appearance does.
The Republican moves to wind back health care to where it was before Obama tried his best to improve it are much more deadly than his hair style and language.
To return to appearance for a moment though: Trumps Brain, Bannon, looks like a drunk, and a mean, bitter, far right drunk who has failed in so many things is a dangerous man to have so close to the levers of power and influence. The far right must be wetting themselves to have one of their own in such a position. I feel the danger lies in Bannon hiding behind Trumps distractions and idiocies, plotting who the hell knows what is far more dangerous than Trumps Twitter wars. I suspect Bannon has no more respect for Trump than do the rest of us here laughing at Trumps hair style, but is using the Twitterous one for his own ends.

RE "Four? Who's the fourth? Dubya, Barrack, The Donald, ?"
You could count Kerry as the fourth President who never was since Dubya probably didn't actually win. President in an alternative reality, perhaps, just a single molecule aside from this one.

Oh, I do hope you aren't banned. Another background mechanism of El Reg. Have an upvote if it helps any. I'd hate to see the back of our own Yosemite Sam with his blazing rhetoric and his angry eyes.
Favored Swift hits the charts: Now in top 10 programming languages
VB is the COBOL for the generation after Generation COBOL. There are planet sized masses of VB code out there, all just working, all doing very important work, all needing maintaining.
If search engines are the tool used to measure popularity then I predict VB/VB.NET will rise in popularity as time passes as there will be fewer people capable of using them efficiently and more people who need to ask "WTF does this do?" or "H(ow)TF do I do this?" as they attempt to maintain or re-program old code.
Re: methodology?
RE: "or if your language of choice has built in help (eg R) then you won't be hitting search engines as often reducing its popularity."
Oh, come on...most people don't RTFM. You can stick TFM up their nose and they still ignore it and ask someone on a web site how to do X or Y, and hope someone will write some code for them too so they don't have to bother understanding enough to be able to write their own. BAH!
And anyway, TFMs usually border on the useless since they merely regurgitate the same info as given by intellisense systems, which comprise merely of syntax and bare comments without any real explanation of WHY this is like this or HOW this is intended to be used. BAH!++

Pence v Clinton: Both used private email for work, one hacked, one accused of hypocrisy
Re: @Version 1.0 ... Friday night in the bar
Firstly: I am fully prepared to accept that the current Pence/phone scandal is NOT the billy club that will bring the bastard down. And no one, I suspect, thinks it is. Rather it is a fly switch which will irritate and distract Pence and all around him and perhaps provoke anger as it is continually flicked in his face. This is good. These are the tactics the Republicans in general and Trump in particular employed with Clinton and it is right and proper that they themselves suffer the same irritation. The Republicans cannot blame the Democrats for doing what they themselves did during the campaign and during Obama's presidency. Well, they can, but they would be blatant hypocrites. Being Blatant is what the Republicans have always been masters of, while the Democrats have struggled. Now it's time the Republicans discover what it feels like to be on the receiving end. They are still masters of the art though while the Democrats are not, so it may not hurt fatally but, baby steps. Until the real weapons are unearthed.
Secondly: There will be no court case against Clinton, because a court case against Clinton cannot proceed if it does not also proceed against all the other politicians doing similar things, including many Republicans. IIRC it was a departing Republican who advised her to set up her own mail servers; Colin Powell.
The article was only poorly written because you disagree with its contents. It no more mirrors the tripe in the MSM (Main Stream Media) than Trumps rhetoric mirrors the tripe of the FRM (Far Right Media); IMHO even more tripier than that of the MSM.
For the best tripe of all see the countless comment boards to be found anywhere on the internet, such as this one.
@Ian Michael Gumby
You're putting in some hours today, Mr. Gumby. Are Big John and Bombastic Bob having a day off and you're official cover for them? You're doing a sterling job. I called them the Abbot and Costello of the far right; now I see you're the Three Stooges instead.
I'm afraid the Republicans are merely reaping the fruits of what they themselves sowed when Obama came to power. They set themselves up for it when they chose a candidate who presents more targets than a target factory whose roof and walls have blown off, and I am pleased to see the democrats are taking full advantage of the opportunities offered rather than being reasonable as the Republicans keep demanding they be. I hope Al Franken doesn't muzzle himself too much.
I also see that trump is attempting ease from his woes by claiming tapping of his personal phones by Obama; A nice example of diversionary tactic, making a claim without evidence to buoy up his own support.

@bombastic bob
>"Well, _I_ voted for the guy, I'm happy he's there, and it's fun to watch the media+Demo-Rat MELTDOWN in progress"
Ah, Bombastic Bob and Big John, the Abbot and Costello of the far right. It looks more like its the current administration that's in melt down, rather than the left. Trump would be in better shape if he didn't keep giving his opponents so much ammunition to use against him. Cant wait to see him in jail alongside Hilary because of their use of private email servers and other equipment.
Re: The Deep State Strikes Back
@ AC "Oh yeah back on topic Darth Cheeto and posse might not want to use insecure comm equipment or his tax returns and tax haven records might actually get released. Probably more scared of that than the Russian dossier."
You're not paying attention. The issue is that they ARE using insecure equipment, and private email servers which were supposed to be a heinous sin, rather than the state issued phones which are likely to have some semblance of security installed, even if their contents are more readily available to the agencies.
Re: The Deep State Strikes Back
Ah, the deep state conspiracy rises again. Either Big John is a long term conspiracy theorist or he is a frequenter of various extreme right wing outlets where the phrase has had some resurgence over the past couple of weeks. Or both. Perhaps its the Illuminati, those Lords of the deep state active since the time of George Washington whose picture does not, in fact, adorn the dollar bill but Adam Weishaupt's who, as all silver headed folk know is one of the founding fathers of the bavarian illuminati. Or perhaps its the lost empire of Atlantis surging from the depths to swamp the would be president with fake news and innuendo. Whoever the deep state is, its being said, people are saying, I don't know, the secret services are claiming that Trump will die in prison. I don't entirely discount the idea of the deep state but I do doubt the organised nature of such a creation. If there is a deep state then it is the underlying meta mind, the zeitgeist, the unconscious id, of the power structures that underpin the country and as such is a force to be reckoned with even if it doesn't really know what its doing in an overall sense. Bits of it here and there are sparking with malice and intent but it isn't really aimed to any particular goal other than the maintenance of its own animus.
My own bit of the countries meta mind is sparking with fascination at all this theatre of the absurd which I cannot but think will end in grand guignol; a theatre of an entirely different kind. Amazing to think I am present at such a wonderful moment in history.
Just remember the eye in the pyramid is watching you and desist from naughtiness.

On my windows 7 machine it never went over 55% peak (or there-a-bouts) with noscript fully on with the page. There was a bit of draggy reaction at the gallery but nothing too bad.

And now, students of people, behold a classic example of someone on the internet refusing to budge and defending their position no matter what evidence is presented or whatever contrary positions they themselves present in different posts. If the exchange goes on much longer it will surely become hyperbolic and angry, and one hopes to defuse the angry bomb...I'm feeling conciliatory today...
Re: Oh woe is me
> "Rounded tabs waste space"
I cannot for the life of me figure out how space is being wasted. Only the current tab is rounded and any extra space used comes from those surrounding it, and its a miniscule amount of space anyway, and I cannot see any net loss.
> "Things I use are hidden"
Well, hard to comment since we dont know what those "Things" are, but most everything is still there with a simple key press including the much loved/hated menus. And if space is of such value, ref. rounded tabs, then surely its better to tuck things out of sight?
> "It looks stupid"
Entirely subjective and not worth wasting effort commenting on, beyond this, since I'm entirely neutral on the current UI.

Grumpy Trump trumped, now he's got the hump: Muslim ban beaten back by appeals court
Re: Right wing hypocrisy.
RE: "perhaps they should have banned travellers from countries whose citizens have actually attacked the USA "
Yes. They should stop US citizens who leave the Fatherland from returning home. That might cut down on some of the bloodshed, in a statistically insignificant way.
