did you read the same article ? It is not mentioned that the researcher was trying to force the company into using his services ?

nowhere is mentioned that Acidgen was setting a date. "Once a patch was released" is not the same as saying that I will release the bug and exploit code at a set date.

Did you ever visit Japan ? I guess not. I live here now for 7 years. The only way to describe Japan is a industrialized developing country.
Every time some one starts spouting this "technologically advanced" I have a one reply.
single glazing. Most buildings have single glazing and no insulation. That is what stops every discussion. Yes there are technologically wonders here but everyday life is on the standards of what life in the 50's must have been in Europe.
another good one: No central heating. If you really believe that Japan is that highly developed you have fallen for the Japan PR. Look up at how well the Hayabusa space probe went and then they still call it a success because that is what you have to do in Japan. Everything is a success and nothing ever fails.

The problem is not that difficult to understand
1 we use nuclear power and keep a certain level of living
2 we only use carbon based fuels and run out of fuel sooner than later, polluting the world in the process
3 we start using candles again and accept sex as the only entertainment after sundown.

They promised and update at 18:30 (Japan time) but it is now almost 21:00 and I could still not get the numbers.
then you would not be being a new TV whenever something news comes out and thus you would not create economic value and stop being patriotic because everybody knows you have to consume as much as you can to help the economy recover.
What you suggest is way to logical and practical and money saving to ever happen.
Not really what will happen is that everybody who uses their pc for facebook, email and web will go to mobile devices, probably. These people are now using PC's with way too much power.
I also look forward to this time. Maybe just maybe the amount of spam will decline if everybody who does not know what windows update is, is moved to a non windows platform.
People who need to develop stuff as in write code, edit anything more complex than a facebook profile like documents, spreadsheets, music, movies, pictures, websites, code they will still need a decent PC/laptop.
I have been on the lookout for a small laptop that could replace all the PC's that I have here but did not find anything yet that would satisfy me and I don't think I am overly demanding.
HDMI output with abitlity to playback HD content, not too noisy while playing said content and the ability to edit documents and as the last impossible hurdle run everything on Ubuntu without charging me an arm and a leg.

I think it is ridiculous how some hack on Zuckerberg. Ok he is is probably not the most social adapted person.
On the other hand he build his company from scratch (or stole it from friends) and actually did something. I wonder how many of his outspoken enemies have a successful business.
To make myself clear: I don't like facebook nor google and the invasive behaviour these companies show in selling personal data to their customers.

man that is the reason why I tell people to go OO. If you get frustrated enough about some thing at least you have the possibility to fix it yourself. Granted you have to be a pretty good / amazing programmer but in MS software you can't even think about finding a solution yourself.

The government protects businesses. The reasoning is that if businesses prosper their employees also prosper. Sadly that is no longer the truth here.
Japanese businesses also have found the way to maximize profit is to minimize costs. This translates in nobody getting hired as a real employee but only as temporary workers. I know friends who have been a temporary worker at the same company for the last 5 years. Being a temp does not oblige the business to pay for health insurance nor pay raises, nor bonuses.
Now that the economy is hurting bad in Japan too consumers don't buy and manufacturers are blaming consumers for the failing market. Of course nobody buys anything anymore they don't have the money since paychecks have been cut.
Large businesses record monster profits but the population is becoming poorer. I can see Otellini liking this since he is in the large business part.
I know a family where the father had the same problem.
the solution is very easy.
You install a main switch in a locked box.
on that switch are the non essential power lines. (TV, Radio, Computer, games console, stereo, mood lights) You come home and find everything switched on, the next day before leaving: unlock the main switch box. turn it of. enjoy your day at work knowing they can not waste energy.
Normally after 3 days everybody gets the message.
What most people do not understand is that all these hybrid / electric / eco cars are aimed at a Japanese traffic situation.
Traveling 50 km takes 1 hour using the highway.
Traveling 75 km (Kitakyushu city to Fukuoka city) takes about 2.5 - 3 hours by normal road.
In Japan every 500 m you ll have a traffic light and they are not synchronized. Well not at the legal speed anyway. If you speed you might make it through 3 or 4 traffic lights instead of 1 or 2.
More than half of the time you are standing still in Japan the moment you enter someplace with buildings. There is a good reason why DVD players, TV's and all the rest of the distractions keep working while you drive in Japan.
