Hmmm...

As far as i was aware, both the Sony and Nintendo controllers use Bluetooth to connect and sync? If thats the case then shouldn't the lawsuit be against whichever group came up with the Bluetooth spec? Or is it suing Sony the new black?

90mph police chief cops 42-day ban

Chizo Ejindu

@Anonymous Coward

Well if he had been involved in a fatal accident i seriously doubt he would have failed to report the incident or pervert the course of justice and again the courts would have made an example of him entirely because of his public position.

However he probably wouldn't have campaigned for stiffer sentences during his trial.

Chizo Ejindu

@Dan B

To be honest this seems like a perfectly reasonable punishment, if not bringing the full weight of the law beacuse he's a road safety copper. I know for a fact that you can be stopped by police doing that around speed and just get 3 points and a £40 fine (ok this was actually a number of years ago so fines may have gone up since), certainly no 42 day ban which is a much stiffer penalty. IMHO the court actually made an example of him which is nice to see.

Chizo Ejindu

He may be guilty as sin...

But credit to him for owning up immediately and stepping down from his position immediately. If only all police officers in positions of senior responsibility would stepdown when they've been caught screwing up...

Americans clueless on NASA budgets

Chizo Ejindu
Flame

@ Bill L

Bill i agree with some of what you are saying, big business has exploited NASA discoveries for it's on profit with the blessings of various US administrations, much more should be spent on advancing medicine and cheap clean abundant fuel sources before we destroy the planet completely.

But it seems to me your anger is directed at the wrong target. Back in the sixties space exploration was a very big deal, the apollo missions were watched by tens of millions are the world and given big news coverage. Nowadays people are far too interested in the latest celebrity gossip and terror story to care about what, in my personal opinion, is the greatest adventure humankind will ever take, exploring the vastness of space.

You complain that 0.6% of the US's national budget is spent exploring space - how much is spent bombing various bits of the world? Building ever more new and innovative death-tech? Propping up all those companies that seem to hoover up various government contracts? Does anyone know how much money the US military spends sending stuff into space? I wouldn't be surprised if it a surprisingly large amount given the spend on NASA. You say we should leave space exploration to the billionaires, how will that help anyone other than more rich people? What about humanity as a whole or should space only be a priviledge afforded on those few super-wealth individuals, the ultimate playboy playground?

IMHO space exploration should be under the auspices of the UN, with all countries channelling 1% of their national budget into a global fund for space exploration, from which we all benefit, not just a rich and powerful few.

Mutilbabel madness

So i thought i'd try a nice straightforward phrase to wash through multibabel, something that couldn't really go wrong:

"Would you please take care of my mother, she has a bad back."

Translated thus: English > French > English > German > English > Italian > English > Portuguese > English > Spanish > English its came back with the following:

"They caused that it requested the excessive mine to but/mother, he a later face of this one defective one to preoccuparsi."

I'm detecting a slight change in my original text... :P

Mars rovers can keep on rovin'

Chizo Ejindu
Mars

Re: Futile

I would strongly disagree about value for money, i personally think they have proven far more cost efficient than a manned mission ever could.

There is no doubt that a manned mission would be ideal but you have to admit that having a mission originally scheduled to last 3 months pushing on into its 4th year is only feasible with unmanned craft to do the exploring. It would be prohibitively expensive to sustain a group of astronauts on Mars for the length of time the rovers have been roving.

IMHO robot explorers are the fastest and cheapest way of exploring our solar system. Only if they find something spectacular should the risk and expense of a manned mission be attempted.

And yes i was being metaphorical wrt willy-waving, i apologize if i came across as sexist. As Forrest Gump said, life is like a box of metaphors... or something :)

Chizo Ejindu

Re: Dana W

See you started off so well and then descended into pointless willy-waving about Vista. As any self-respecting geek knows, Vista is the deformed bastard-child from the unholy union of Beelzebub and Microsoft, allegedly (and i say again ALLEGEDLY so back off you jack-booted attack lawyers!) :)

Ahem... as i was saying, any self-respecting geek wouldn't touch Vista with a barge-pole for at least 2 years, seeing as XP, for all its flaws, does everything Vista does, just a lot quicker and less buggy. And without a plethora of pointless cpu-sucking graphical widgets. Or broken file-copying system.

IMHO the iPhone is a case of pure and simple greed and profiteering, off the back of Apple devotees and fashionistas. You all got taken for a ride and quite rightly should be pissed. Any product that can have 33% sliced off the retail cost after merely 68 days means it was never worth that price in the first place.

re: japan

IHMO the unfortunate truth is that people who don't know any better will equate the Japanese love of high tech gadgetry to a love of IT which in actuality are 2 different things. I would suspect (tho obviously this is my own supposition with no basis in fact :P) that PC's per head is significantly lower in Japan than most of the rest of the Western world.

Jason Bourne disses James Bond

Chizo Ejindu

Pre Casino Royale, yes...

Prior to Casino Royale i would actually agree with him, Bond was a gadget-laden sexist mysogynistic dinosaur, a cold-war relic. Casino Royale changd all that with a vengence. Gone are most of the gadgets (no ridiculous invisible cars), the slickness, the slut in every port. In comes a load more realism to the franchise. He gets his arse kicked and almost dies, he falls in love, he suffers tragedy. Typically a Bond film would open with some big set-piece spectaular stunt sequence, CR opened with a brutal hand-to-hand fight in a bathroom. If anything the Bourne films are becoming more ridiculous as he can seemingly have the entire US intelligence network after him and yet he'll end up in their offices searching through their files :P

re: Jesus Christ is Holy

You are obviously a religious person and this is a free and open comments section so all views are welcome. However there are a couple of things you have written which, imho, don't make sense.

Firstly you said "He loves us all no matter what our circumstances are." By "He" i assume you mean the christian God to be precise. Now if this statement is wholly true then "no matter what our circumstances", whether we are christian, muslim, bhuddist, atheist, agnostic, even devil-worshipping, God will love us unconditionally. He'll love us if we spend $1500 on a dirty piece of concrete or give it to charity.

Now the sentence directly before that one says "Without faith it is impossible to please God." If this statement is also wholly true then the only people who could ever please God are faithfully christians. By implication every other person on the planet who does not have faith in your God can never please him no matter what the circumstances. If a bhuddist brings about world peace or an atheist develops a cure for cancer your God will be angry because they do not have faith in him. But if a devout christian goes to war, whatever the reason God will be pleased because they have absolute faith in him.

How can God love us unconditionally and yet require us to please him? If he loves us unconditionally then no matter what we all say, do, think, feel, believe or disbelieve he loves us all and we should all equally benefit from that love. Faith becomes irrelevant, believing in him becomes irrelevant, HE becomes irrelevant. But if faith IS relevant, is a requisite for his pleasure, his love, then thats a pretty narrow set of circumstances, a pretty large condition for his love.

Sony says no to Euro PS3 price cut

Chizo Ejindu

Bend Over and Take It Like a Slut, ok Europe?

I must thank Eminem for providing me with the perfect title for my comment, almost :)

I used to really respect Sony. For a time they made gaming actually cool, they appeared to respect their consumers all over the world, they turned gaming into major global industry. But it appears somewhere along the way they got arrogant, self-absorbed. They believed they could do no wrong and to this day still believe that. Unfortunately the truth is goes to kick them in the nuts repeatedly until they collapse into a pile of quivering jelly. And its a very simple truth - you fuck with your consumers, they'll go else where. You treat your consumers like third class citizens, they'll go elsewhere. You show an obvious bias in your "global strategy", the one's at the bottom of the pile will go elsewhere.

Europeans already pay the highest prices IN THE WORLD for these slabs of tech and no bleating on about taxes and exchange rates will make ANYONE think that we aren't being ripped off. Every. Single. Day. And now to compound it by this so called "exceptional value" pack AND not even bothering to give us the option of the 80 GB version? It would be quicker if Sony just called us all c***s to our faces and be done with it.

What's really galling is that i was just starting to come round to the idea of getting a PS3, ome of the vids from E3 are mightily impressive. But Sony can fuck right off if they think i'm gonna pay twice as much as anyone else on the planet.

South Dakota rejoins the execution club

Chizo Ejindu

IMHO...

Personally i cannot, and never will, think that execution is anything other than state-sponsored murder and harks back to the bibilcal eye-for-an-eye type revenge mindset.

There have been cases in the UK of people convicted of murder, sentenced to life imprisonment only for fresh evidence to come to light 20 years later that proves their innocence. Now if these people had been executed, following the eye-for-an-eye logic, wouldn't someone else therefore be guilty of murder of an innocent person and require execution?

I'm not saying that's the case in this particular instance but there will always be that possibility that the wrong person gets executed for a particular crime.

Danes tout flamethrower-packing robot 'farmworker'

Chizo Ejindu

I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords!

Don't you all realise, they are here now, running the world! Let's look at the evidence...

All mechanical thingys need lubrication for metallic joints right? The most common and abundant lubricant is oil right? And currently the "coalition of the willing" is engaged in a "hearts and mind" kill-a-thon in Iraq to secure all the lubricant the machines will ever need, for the next 50 years or so. Is it strange that western governments spend ten's of billions on hi-tech warfare and it always comes down to young frontline grunts shooting poor people, not ultra-tech machines disarming terrorists from the other side of the world. How better for the machines to take over then to get us to wipe ourselves out!

In conclusion to my rambing rant i'll say this - the best trick the devil ever pulled was not convicing us that he doesn't exist, but convincing us that he's not a robot!

O2 gets UK iPhone deal

Chizo Ejindu

What's the point - i think you missed it :)

But you're a cost-conscious techy and therefore the absolute wrong type of person for an iPhone. You don't understand "cool" in the corporate america sense of the word "cool". You don't understand iLife. You're not a "consumer". You're just like in that fabulous Apple ad, PC vs MAC, the nerdy dweeb in the suit. Yes, your box may be a bit cheaper and uglier and full of "techy" nonsense features you may use. Yes, you may have to choose which company supplies the software widgets you want. And yes your mp3 player may be so functional and un-lifestyle that it doesn't have a colour named after it. But all thats is irrelevant, you don't buy Apple (tm), therefore you lose at life. I'm disgusted to even be in the same comments thread as you. Go kill yourself geek-boy.

Le Mans vs. F1

"Personally, I am not a F1 fan: I prefer endurance racing... Try keeping a F1 car running for 4, 6 or 24 hours at race speeds... (just to compare, my calculations for the US F1 Grand Prix, the winner was running an average of 201 km/h in a 1h 31 min. race. The overall winner at Le Mans, the Audi America R10 averaged 209 km/h over 24 hours... it's a bit more harsh on the hardware...and it's a diesel...)"

Whilst i understand your point its a bit tenuous to compare these 2 tracks as they are so vastly different. Correct me if i'm wrong but Le Mans has an awful lot of long fast sections where the cars are flat out for 15-30 seconds whereas the Indy track just has the one top gear section. I think its true that Le Mans racers have a higher top speed than F1 cars but F1 cars will absolutely destroy any other car when it comes to twisty technical sections of track due to vastly superior downforce etc and will out-accelerate everything :). I'd like to see an F1 car do a lap of Le Mans and a Le Mans car do a lap of Indy, then we'd get a really reflection of their overall abilities.

Typical Racist Lawmaking

Another nail in the coffin for freedom of expression in the good old US of A. And stunningly racist too. How can a law that will directly affect 90% of a minority population and barely 1% of the majority population be ANYTHING but racist?

And where does ths puritanical lawmaking end? Will the ban all bikinis, all swimsuits, all shorts as being obscene? Will they outlaw advertising and sell of all underwear as it can be used in an offensive manner? Will they have ritualistic burnings of all catalogues that dare to have pictures of men or women wearing only underwear? Will they ban all programmes that include scenes on beaches or really hot weather, because the risk of naked skin on public display will be too high? Utter madness! But hey as long as they are gun-wielding god-fearing christians i'm sure they have everyone's best interest at heart....

RE the Fashion Police comment, essex chavs may pretend to be 50 Cent etc, but when you're poor, black and living in the deep south of america, you generally don't "pretend" anything. It's fine you don't like people dressing a certain way, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But try not to tar everyone with the same brush - some people wear hoodies, low-slung trousers and caps sideways because they always have, others becuase they see it on MTV.

Paris Hilton released for 'medical reasons'

Chizo Ejindu

Typical

Wow. A 40 day sentence reduced to 23 days for "good behaviour" i.e. turning up to the hearing and now reduced to 3 days for "unspecified medical reasons". If she's ill shouldn't she be in a hospital? Ah no my mistake the "unspecified medical reasons" are that she's rich, famous, white and it's entirely unfair to expect anyone rich, famous and white to serve out their sentence. That's for poor, ordinary black people.

It wouldn't be American Justice if it wasn't blatantly biased and corrupt.

Bug brace menaces Adobe Photoshop

Chizo Ejindu

And there i was thinking i was a geek!

I had a look at that windowsecurity.com article and i must admit, a lot went over my head. So in simple laymans terms this is my understanding of it...

Program X, takes file Y and runs whatever standard process against it. File Y, while appearing to be a certain length, is actually longer by whatever means and therefore overflows the allocated memory space into space reserved for program X? The excess data outside the allocated space is then immediately evaluated (by windows presumably rather than program X) and if found to be a properly formed executable automatically run with the priviledges of the original program X?

Again i stress my understanding of the machanics of it all are very limited and i have a load of questions that i'll save for now but is that the general gist of it?
