Bing is the most heavily poisoned search engine, study says

Ole Juul

Salesmen

“Search engine poisoning can be very dangerous for internet users, as they trust the search engine they’re using to filter out malicious links, and in this case it seems to be Bing which is letting internet users down,” said Fraser Howard, principal virus researcher, Sophos.

I don't think people trust a search engine to filter out malicious links. For one thing many, perhaps most, people can't tell the difference between a search engine and a browser. For another, this guy is trying to sell something, so his "filtering" is suspect as well.

What's in the box

I can see trouble when selling a device that may not in itself even have a copyright, but every chip inside carries separate, and multiple, copyrights. Sell one box and you could be charged with multiple infractions.

Old Thinkpads never die

I'm a bit of a vintage buff and just got a 750c (1993) and found that I could actually run a wireless PCMCIA card under MS-DOS and use telnet and FTP to administer other computers around the place. These things never die.

Europe UNDER ATTACK in simulated cyber security test

Ole Juul

Re: Surely...

These simulations are necessary in order for someone to get the credit for coming up with the idea.

The tests are flawed, the best DoS attack is going to involve someone inside helping, or as the first two posters point out, power tools in the data center.

I don't think they want to get too realistic in case they uncover any weaknesses. That would cause too much trouble and possibly endanger the the job security of the person who came up with the idea.

Dotcom: "We are building a massive global network. All non-US hosters will be able to connect servers & bandwidth."

Non-US hosters? Hmm, this could have an interesting international flavour. With "filesharing" turning into the new radio, this could also be game-changing. I don't know what we will see exactly, but I feel we are close to a critical point regarding this new internet medium.

Party politics have no real connections with municipal politics where I live. Does this guy's affiliation with the Pirate Party actually have any meaning in Switzerland? Re: These articles make a flawed assumption

Then there is the little matter of line speeds. if my cloud is in the UK then I guess i'd get about 100kbits/sec access. This is hardly usable now is it. I wish the people who put forward this rubbish actually got out into the real world once in a while.

I too get about 100kbits/second transfer rate here. This is roughly in the range of what I expect from a floppy drive. SATA 2.0 is 3 Gbit/s. It would appear likely that the writer of this article does not have a hard drive.

Korean boffins discover secret to quick-charge batteries

Ole Juul

Re: Fast discharge as well?

Maybe something in between a battery and a supercapacitor? That would indeed give possibilities as a "secondary battery" either in full electric or hybrid systems. This may turn out the be really interesting.

One might call it a "buffer" battery, to put it in IT terms. I like the idea of being able to have power bursts available while the main battery can be designed with other desirable qualities in mind.

Hong Kong has fastest broadband on the planet

Ole Juul

Interpretation please

Much of USA is using dialup (about 10%), yet the map says 1% under 250Kbps. Much of Canada is on wireless where hundreds of people share an IP, so those numbers are not indicative of users. Does this State of the Internet report, in fact, have any real meaning? Just asking.

Re: Bad data

What knowledge? I'm simply basing my comment on what I see regular people using. What you are referring to is no doubt correct in most work environments. Just because you and I use computers all day, doesn't mean that most people do. My point is that many more people have computers at home than at work, and all those computers in people's homes are not updated frequently and from what I can see are quite old by IT standards. A large (probably the largest) proportion of people don't work in an office or otherwise use computers at work. I suggest that MS is only "measuring" office or business computers.

Ole Juul

Bad data

Redmond says . . . that 50 per cent of desktop PCs worldwide now run Windows 7.

Just looking around my neighbourhood, most non-professional users are indeed using some form of MS-Windows. However, some use XP, most are still on Vista, and a couple bought computers recently which are running Win7. Whatever Microsoft does well, gathering realistic information isn't one of them.

Wired broadband adoption dips as wireless flies

Ole Juul

Re: Australia figures misleading

People want it, they just can't get it.

The same here in Canada, although perhaps for other reasons. In any case it is wrong to assume that people don't want to buy something just because it isn't offered. That isn't statistics. It's not even bad statistics.

Ole Juul

Wireless or mobile?

The OECD is frustratingly vague about just what constitutes a wireless service.

The word wireless is generally not used exclusively to refer to mobile, though perhaps that is what they wish to do but won't admit it.

Here in Canada we have an increase in wireless service simply because the areas where it is impractical to install wired service are the ones which are being serviced last in the big push to get everyone on the internet. Like someone said above, "everyone I know has wired". So now we're filling in the areas where we can only use wireless - which is most of rural Canada.

Ole Juul

Re: its a load

Its nice to see Judges starting to wise up to all this crap and seeing an IP address doesn't identify a person directly, on DHCP which most connections are for home users, an IP could be used by 1 person at one time an hour later its being used by another . . .

It's worse than that. In rural settings like where I live the IP doesn't change (despite DHCP) and there are literally hundreds of people are on the same IP because of NAT being used for these rural wireless networks. Whoever came up with the notion that an IP related to even a specific house was obviously a huge fan of computer fiction.

Lowery: The blue-collar musician at the eye of the copyright storm

Ole Juul

Why all the crying about popular and downright commercial music?

I don't download "pirated" music, partly for ethical reasons, but mostly because it is generally not even remotely interesting stuff. Much of it strongly offends me by its sheer derivative gall. We're typically talking about musicians who think that rehearsing is practising. Dance steps, image, and "sounds like" efforts are not worth anything more than branding and marketing hype to my ear and pocket book. If I was interested in that kind of stuff, I'd probably watch TV. Really talented players are certainly hard to find in "download land" and I don't want to put my money there or support that kind of thing in general. I've had better luck in concert halls and at private recitals. I'm not saying popular music is wrong or useless but I personally prefer to do without, and the assumption that it has value to everybody is just plain wrong.

Global warming: It's GOOD for the environment

Ole Juul
FAIL

Re: This really is a horrible bit of journalism

It's downright ignorant, in fact.

Without knowing the effect of a small increase in temperature on the mycoflora (no, not "micro", in case there are any non-scientists here) there is no knowing how the vascular plants will grow. There are also many other biological issues that cannot be ignored if there is going to be any validity to this study. To only talk about the plants which are big enough for a casual observer to see is irresponsible and disingenuous.

There may have been some educated comments buried among the scientifically childish talk here, but I am embarrassed at the sheer ignorance of most of them. Shame on "pub talk" commentards, and shame on the author too.

Activists unite, declare 'Internet Freedom'

Now, I wonder if these guys are prepared for a similar war, against every totalitarian-minded government on the planet?

It still makes sense to clarify what one stands for before deciding to engage or not.

Because they will stop at nothing to prevent such freedom.

That is indeed the reality. However, perhaps making that more obvious to more people will be helpful, particularly in countries where we are somewhat complacent.
