University of Cambridge to decommission its homegrown email service Hermes in favour of Microsoft Exchange Online

Thumb Up

No surprise

UIS have to deal with two things, first a mess of extremely dated in house applications written in all sorts of languages, nice web front ends often hide the chaos below the surface. Secondly, it's two departments brought together and half the staff hiss at the other as they pass in corridors. I see this less about how good Hermes may or may not have been and more a move to mainstream IT support models. You can have as many Perl scripts as you like, but UIS is trying to deliver a service and be a service provider when many think it's their own fiefdom.

Re: Quality unchanged

This comment is spot on, if the policy helps to reduce in any small way the vile diatribe of homophobic, racist, sexist and mostly downright disgusting comments that quite often appear currently on YouTube by making people identifiable, then that is all good in my book. Human nature it seems allows people to quite happily say one thing to a complete stranger when hidden by a cloak of anonymity that they would not dream of saying if they met that stranger in person.

Google's Nexus 5: Best smartphone bang for your buck. There, we said it

My 48 hours of use random thoughts.

Mine arrived Monday even though Google said it would not ship until the 8th. Replacing a Samsung S2 that has proved itself well over the 2.5 years I've owned it.

- Call quality is good, better than S2

- Signal / Wifi strength appears the same

- Battery life surpasses the S2 by a wide margin, not scientically tested but certainly by quite a few hours

- Lack of Samsung bloat is so refreshing, really liking the vanilla Android experience

- Colours are not as vivid as the S2 but the crispness of the screen more than makes up for that

- It's ridiculously quick!

I considered a Samsung S4, because of the replaceable battery and memory card slot that I thought I valued. When I thought about how often I changed the battery over, and that the card in the slot had been corrupted and rendered useless on at least two occasions and therefore hasn't been used in over a year those must haves seemed quite costly ones. The purchase cost of the S4 just does not add up for the what is on offer. Some have said that the Nexus 5 is cheap and tacky, holding it my hand now with a friends S4 and coming from an S2 I can only assume the commentator has a very different perception of what feels cheap and tacky than I do.

After saying all of the above there is one simple killer feature that I have missed off mobiles for years, the notification LED is back...

4G anyone?

VM: So, are you going to buy our new 4G service?

Cust: No, I'm fine on 3G

VM: {fiddle-fiddle-tweak} So are you sure you don't want 4G?

Cust: Hmm, 3G seems a bit slower these days, but it's good enough

VM: {more-tweaking} You sure?

Cust: Wow it's slow on 3G these days, but still OK

VM: {clunk-fiddle-kludge} Absolutely sure?

Cust: What the... this 3G is useless! How much did you say 4G was?

Twitter discovers MMS for photo tweeting

Whoa there if you are on Three...

Unlike O2, who count an MMS as 4 SMS messages out of your allowance, Three charge you £0.25 for a MMS message. As I recently found out after jumping ships from O2 to Three and getting £5 worth of charges.

My perfect cup of canteen tea

According to my friend Charlie the story goes like this:

Bag + Cup

Cup tilted at alarming angle and inserted into oversized hot water dispenser unit (with undersized dispenser tray)

Note water temperature at a maximum of 83 degrees. Some say, sub optimal, I say you’ll be lucky

Push and hold water button

Assuming approximately 30ml per second flow rate, count to 10.

Realise flow rate is slightly higher today as water isn’t running uphill and Anglia Water have another pump on

Watch water pour over the top of cup and dribble down the counter top.

Mop up = Brewing Time

Prod mechanical cow to dispense anywhere from 5-50ml of milk

Spend approximately 1 minute fishing around with a half melted and weak stemmed plastic spoon attempting to extract tea bag.

Add sugar, x2 sachets of fair-trade brown sugar, realising that x1 sachet equates to one third to one half a tea spoon

Stir feverishly with the remnants of the melted spoon.

Decamp to the office and enjoy. Ahh.

Oval Sticker fine?

Not true, Euro style number plates with the country code on the left have been legal since 2001 in all of the European Community member states and therefore tandem oval stickers are not required. I would ask for your money back if you got fined!

Google Voice invites callers

Rafael Moslin
Stop

And that's bad because?!

What a peculiar statement to make, "The European habit of forcing the calling party pay for the call...", far as it seems to me that is how it should be, if someone initiates a call then that person is the one that is using the infrastructure and therefore should pay. Surely in the US landline owners do not have to pay for miss-dials and spam or other unwanted calls?!
