FCC Republicans slam brakes on net neutrality, but this wagon ain't slowing

Keven E.

The coin needs flipping

dormaj

We know you lost your chance to fix this... yet, I can guess what you wanted to type.

And the statement "Let’s leave the power where it belongs - with the American people." is about as disingenuous as it gets. Should have read "Let’s leave the power where it belongs - with the American people" because that is the real intent of Pai's message.

Please don't quote anything Rush Limbaugh says here. I'm not saying ignore him (cause he ain't gonna just go away) but some places should be sacred.

Re: The writing is on the wall!

"...greatest experiment in Capitalism ever."

Well, as long as you realize we are still experimenting with it. When it comes to people, society demands more support and civility than an individual's or collective's ability to capitalize on *something.

"Liberalism is a mental disorder!".

Please realize that "Liberalism" (apparently) means different things on the opposing sides of the pond.

"...technologists invent ever more life-enhancing applications..."

It makes me think of the Borg every time someone uses this *justification.

Keven E.

Not so big

"...with decidedly mixed results."

Too much chaos for data to be meaningful, but they'll keep trying to sell it as a predictability, of course. At least some things are predictable.

Just... compare who are "friends" and who makes money most of the time. How many or how long can winning streaks be? Or... is beyond the threshold of "WTF were you thinking? If you keep that up, everyone will find out the game is rigged". That information doesn't seem to need to be so big to extract that conclusion.

"For example, working on a 300 page Word document for 3 hrs, and then hitting "Save",..."

Even if I agree with the pending "OS in real-time" problem at hand... I'd have to say "haven't you've been there before?" and "If so, whyTF are you still keeping single documents even close to the 300 page range?"... and... "Three hours without hitting the save button?".

Have a pint and think about what *you have(n't) done.

Really, really non-partisan!

Re: Letting companies sue governments for lost profits

"If shareholders were able to be sued directly, there would be no advantage to a corporate structure and you'd probably see the majority of today's public companies taken private in short order."

Now that they have (legitmized (sort of)) a "vote" with their money with the passing of "Citizens United"(sic) make 'em all private and responsible across the board. They asked for it. Perhaps it'll serve to trim down to size that overly exposed and imposed gambling institution over there on Wall St. Maybe they'll actually issue jail time for future crooks. It should also create alot of jobs for all those lawyers out there with nothing better to do. Perhaps another 50x(?) Attorneys general + sub staff positions. Just what the libertarians want. <burp>

Greed does not need any more help... especially financial institutions that don't add *real value. Eventually everything and anything can be pointed to as a reason for failure... and what's to prevent claiming that since lack of growth is, in essence, a loss, it's a reason for a suit?

You EU'ns need to hold your ground, or you'll become a US State... without any representation. (Not that we don't already have a bunch of those)

BTW - The person who went through this post and down-voted everyone is a victim of the same kind of brainwashing that needs to be continually called out.

So when the software phones home to get an update and checks to see if this is a registered, working license, the update engine sent out alerts because this was the same group of 100 licenses from the same IP bank the got the same patch 257 times.

Re: SHIoTE

"Aside from that the ability to apparently decide in microscopic detail what your buying preferences are will result in the perfect advertising campaign aimed at you personally."

Advertising will be useless because everyone'll have enough information from the IoT to always have only the best *version available and everyone will know what that is and buy only that. The end of materialism as we know it. Only form will matter. Functionality will cease to function.

Obama makes net neutrality pledge in State of the Union

Keven E.

I've never met Obama

From his speech:

"Understand, you've got to earn it – you've got to keep your grades up and graduate on time."

It's what they do now...

I'm from Chicago, the west side.

Nobody said all teachers are great. (whatever that means)

From "No Child Left Behind" (not that I'm all impressed by this GOP inspired theory, which I consider similar to an accountant keeping an extra set of books just for the public)

"The act requires states to provide "highly qualified" teachers to all students. Each state sets its own standards for what counts as "highly qualified". Similarly, the act requires states to set "one high, challenging standard" for its students. Each state decides for itself what counts as "one high, challenging standard," but the curriculum standards must be applied to all students, rather than having different standards for students in different cities or other parts of the state."

Something tells me the rural Alabama standard is a bit different from city of LA..

45 states have already been give "Flexibility" waivers.

It's true. People are different. Everywhere.

Equality is in our constitution. In this case, it's specific to an access to education. Think of it as adding two years on to high school.

Keven E.

I've never met Obama

"The existing education system cannot graduate even minimally competent people from city schools while lying about the results and needs a complete over haul but he wants to break something that works for the sole reason of "equality"."

Clearly not breaking something that "works" (good enough).

"Equality" is a pretty good "sole reason", as sole reasons go.

******

"Maybe the continued media glorification of the hip hop THUG life will result in some nice crackhouse jobs for these new "graduates"."

Thinly veiled would be an understatement.

Go Canada: Now ILLEGAL to auto-update software without 'consent'

Keven E.

Documenting change

Doesn't the term *upgrade (sort of) imply adding features... specifically with software? To me it's something beyond a patch collection. One expects it to do the same functions faster or more efficiently, perhaps more security hardened, but expanding functionality is part of an *upgrade, which is a new purchase... which generally includes a new licensing agreement negotiated for each new purchase.

Not that people don't go from Brandx.5 to Brandx.6 because they just want to feel/say they have the newest, and that they never do anything new with it, but.

**********

It sounds like each piece of software now needs to first make available for us a program which will provide us with documentation of the consent we give to install it, and separate documentation for every installation of any and all new/additional programs/features in the future. That oughta provide a coupla two-tree coders a gig for a while...

*********

And... what about the profitability of those telecommunications service providers, the lack of which certainly presents an identifiable threat to the availability (at all) of its network. Did Canada sign onto the TTIP?

Keven E.

Bug repair

In the original license agreement section 34, paragraph 3, line 7, it states that you knowingly install this software with "bugs", which you agree we will fix for you (when we get around to it, of course). By "fix" we mean insert code that copies all of your contact information and database and drops off a copy by phoning home, the location of which we reserve the future right to change by "fixing a previously unknown bug".

Identity crisis

...every individual around the world to have ONE and ONLY ONE id on the internets, ...

It's not too much to record, but perhaps track. It's not like the internet is *naturally anonomizing. "Close enough" here is easy enough to (eventually) figure out by correlation of all that data/history that's being collected.

It sounds surprisingly similar <ahem> to the spawn of satan's push for "big data". So when the government does it in the guize of security, it sucks, but when corporations do it to try to sell you a set of tires for that car you just bought... well... ok, that sucks too.

... and all actions will be through a government sponsored proxy...

I have little doubt that this isn't already (basically) happening.... there are no reasonables to think otherwise. (have you ever done a tracert without some hop along the way not telling you *who it is?) Maybe not for idea control (whatever), but what's the functional difference between a copier/slurper and a log on a proxy other than the intent to announce itself?

Electronics "x-ray" table

Aren't there sophisticated enough "scanning" devices to see what electrical currents (even minute amounts) are active, so, therefore, booting a device all the way *electrically engages the hard drive, the video card, the motherboard, the nic/wifi interface, the screen... sufficiently exposing the % of the innards of a machine and all of the physical masses and pathways as electricity flows through it?

US watchdog boss pencils in net neutrality February showdown – report

"Surely someone somewhere would have seized this opportunity a while back if it actually existed."

It truly does still exist, as "Condo associations" make deals with one company over another for wiring a building. There are only 2 co's available per neighborhood, per municipal "share the wealth" agreements, and you become a "one" or "the other" (of those two only) building. Some buildings won't let you mount dishes. There are 76 units in my building... I'll guess the cable company has one big pipe and one overtaxed router to serve allus. I'd bet most school dorms have the same offerings (limits).

Relax and enjoy the ride

Carrying a time piece strapped around your wrist so you so you can satisfy a need to know exactly what/where you and your relationship with it is at any given moment(sic) is really a borderline "unhealthy" obsession... not like whatever society you participate in hasn't trained you to think otherwise. Some people actually maintain a stockholm syndrome with *time.

Having fun yet?

Keven E.

I keep forgetting...

... people have an ocd-like obsession with time.

"As for people wearing watches, yes that's still the majority of people." A quick survey around the office here (even if a limited sample on this day) show out of 20 only 4 are wearing (or do wear) wrist watches. Ages range from 25 to 65. Ages of the 4 wearing them are 28, 49, 55, 65.

Laziness

"...how successful an ad campaign was; why a DBMS is running slowly; and even when did an ATM break down?"

No. Not "big" problems at all. All three are the solution looking for a problem to justify its existence. The first is/should be (defined) built into the campaign itself (oldest story in the capitalists book). The second is running *slowly (compared to whatever) because of the size of the useless data you are subjecting systems to... and the third is, well, a self defining pile of bullpuckets. Your ATM's suck (by design) if they aren't faster than and are relying on your average disgruntled user who ran out of pocket cash and will take the time to tweet about it.
