Silicon nanowires: The Next Big Thing™ in chip design

Re: depleted...

Nooo, first you've got to submit your jargon plan to the confusion board who ratify it against the the discombobulation strategy and sign it off to the committee for cross-field screw-up.

Only then can you define the words that allow you to proceed within your discrete speciality.

After all, we all love our shibbolethic neologisms don't we?

Re: Potentially history repeating

Yep, I think they need to go Android and expand on it with BBM etc.

Or just not build a tablet. The whole idea seems misconceived.

What Apple were really good at with the iPhone was not wasting money on me-too devices until they could do something better than the incumbent. That seemed to work.

That sounds OK. Back to file manager days maybe. As long as it sticks with managed-by-window instead of manage-by-app I'll be happy.

Apple CEO: 'Amazon Fire didn't dent our sales'

In my house

There is one PC, 3 iPads, 1 iPhone, 1 Windows Phone, a Kindle 4 and a Wii.

That's just 2 adults and 2 children of 7 & 5.

I'm not sure what point I'm making other than there's going to be an awful lot of mixed households out there and these things seem to be creating their own niche.

Terry Pratchett computer sniper-scope: Spec-ops mini version

Andy Farley

As I understand it

the primary purpose of the 2 man team is psychological.

a) you get to split the responsibility – he told me to shoot/I only said to shoot I didn’t pull the trigger

b) you don’t want to let you mate down

c) you don’t want to be shown up

d) the sniper knows no-one is sneaking up on him while he's on-scope so is less twitchy

which all means the sniper is more likely to pull the trigger on the target and less likely to go home and do the same to themselves.

So I can see how it would make sense in terms of increased lethality but I don't think it makes for smaller sniper teams.

Fragged, fragged and thrice fragged! 20 years of id Software’s Doom

Andy Farley
Thumb Up

Ah yes.

When level design meant more than an attractive single route the player could go down with cutscenes at the end. Managing your ammo, bypassing a health pack when you're at 95% because you'd waste 15% of it and you wanted it available to go back to – all these things make for a better game, regardless of how many bells and whistles the graphics engine distracts you with.

Talking about corridors my favourite level was in a Doom add-on. You teleported in to a long corridor with the out-teleport at the other end. There were loads of really tough daemons facing away from you and a shed-load of explosive barrels lining it.

Eureka moment – leg it down the corridor then turn and shoot a far barrel with the pistol. All the daemons start to turn round. Watch the chain reaction as the barrels blew race down the corridor taking them out – step backwards on to the teleport just before the shock wave reaches you...brilliant.

New plastic telescope ammo machine gun is light as a rifle

Andy Farley

AIUI

The brass ammo significantly cools the MG due to it taking a large proportion of the heat away. I doubt the new ammo creates significantly less heat, therefore the barrel and mechanism must be made of higher heat tolerance materials.

So I imagine it's expensive. You'd also show up like a beacon under IR.

Not to say I don't think this is the way to go but a) why jump when they're still making improvements eg caseless and b) it's not without its own drawbacks.

"Shaped charges in particular use chemical explosives to convert a metal lining, often copper, into a focused jet of plasma which propagates at hypersonic speeds and does the actual penetrating of the armour."

Nope. No plasma. The copper liners are pushed past their elastic limit and deform at very high speed but they don't turn to plasma.

Ballmer disses Android as cheap and complex

Andy Farley

Well...

I like the W7P interface.

Ballmer needs to be pushed out the door though. The guy is an embarrassment. As a CEO you need to foster an environment of innovation - I can't imagine him doing that.

Imagine having an idea and going to Steve Jobs (*ahem* previous to him dying), You'd think it through and if you thought it was cool you'd go and show it. He might like it, he might not. But you'd still feel good for asking.

Imagine going to Ballmer. You just wouldn't.

I bet his office smells.
