UNIX greybeards threaten Debian fork over systemd plan

Destroy All Monsters Silver badge

Re: Such hatred

Believe me, when you're trying to figure out why your service isn't starting, systemd looks mighty nice, and upstart is pretty cute too.

To paraphrase a saying from OO programming...

People had a serious problem with properly managing service startups under the increasingly creaky SysV approach.

They thought systemd would be a nice idea.

Now they had two problems.

Re: The meek will inherit the earth

No panic before elections, remember?

OTOH, I hear this:

If President Obama is serious about tackling Ebola, he should look to individual intiative, as Ron Paul has advised. He writes in his weekly column, “Firestone Tire and Rubber Company has successfully contained the spread of Ebola among 80,000 people living in Harbel, the Liberian town housing employees of Firestone’s Liberian plant and their families. In March, after the wife of a Firestone employee developed Ebola symptoms, Firestone constructed its own treatment center and implemented a program of quarantine and treatment. Firestone has successfully kept the Ebola virus from spreading among its employees. As of this writing, there are only three Ebola patients at Firestone’s treatment facility ... Firestone’s success in containing Ebola shows that, far from justifying new state action, the Ebola crises demonstrates that individuals acting in the free market can do a better job of containing Ebola than can governments.”

Re: No propulsion?

LOLNO

With all that comes from Jimbopedia:

Solar Wind:

"The wind exerts a pressure at 1 AU typically in the range of 1–6 nPa, although it can readily vary outside that range."

Light Pressure:

perfect absorbance: F = 4.54 μPa

perfect reflectance: F = 9.08 μPa (normal to surface)

That's three order of magnitude difference, advantage light sail.

Anyway you need a special kind of sail (actually: a set of wires) for the solar wind: Electric solar wind sail

Destroy All Monsters Silver badge

Re: No propulsion?

On the other hand, I don't think the sail is supposed to interact with the solar wind. Except in the negative sense, you don't want it to pick up nasty charges.

Destroy All Monsters Silver badge
Windows

Re: No propulsion?

If you are designing it right, you can orient the sail to get an orientable thrust vector, for the rest you can design your orbits correctly or do chaotic-based orbit transfers for maximum coolness.

Solar sailing has been in the "planning stages" since the mid-70s at least, with nice images by Vincent DiFate or whomever; there were even plans to have a comet-rendezvous mission use this .... now it's 2014 and it's still marked "cancelled". NASA ... just another gummint outfit.

Happiness economics is bollocks. Oh, UK.gov just adopted it? Er ...

Destroy All Monsters Silver badge
Mushroom

Happiness maximization is such a stupid two-pence-guru idea...

... that anyone who consider it should be happy-slapped with a bat at least twice per hour for at least five months. With a jawbreaker water-soaked pillow.

Seriously, it's something out Brave New World, I can see Ford cynically talk about great happiness for the higher castes while we bomb colored people in foreign lands that might interfere with our right to allocate the oil under their feet, because, you know, happy people are not wont to question the leadership or their edicts very much. Then everyone takes a tablet of Soma, has a mindless sex orgy with whomever is at hand (no AIDS please, we are happy), then goes home contented. THE END!!

Yeah, how is happiness maximization going to bring the capital infrastructure that brings you through the winter, saves you from (fear!) EBOLA or gives you adequate medical care? It won't. Be happy, die crappy.

Moreover, the idea that the government is in charge of maximizing anything, be it happiness or GDP (which it currently tries to nuke hard), is right up the alley of that intellectual shitter Krugman, who isn't exactly against have a war to "up the GDP" (and of course destroy everything of worth except the number). That he now whores out with happiness is a new low.
