Natwest, RBS: When will bank glitch be fixed? Probably not today

Wot? no rollback?

We have to spell out the rollback procedure for a proposed system change in order for the change to be authorised. Even our plumber left our old ball valve in his van, so when the new one he'd fitted started whistling like a steam train he could put the old one back until he'd found a better replacement.

Basic stuff.

Traffic-light plague sweeps UK: Safety culture strangles Blighty

I knew they were up to something...

Over a 5-year period, the number of traffic lights on my 4-mile commute doubled, from 11 to 22. Several roundabouts were flattened and replaced with lights, and numerous pelicans popped up. Instead of arriving within a minute of my ETA, I could be held up for more than 5 minutes, depending of how many reds I caught. That may not sound much, but it's a long time to be standing around doing nothing when the weather's foul.

Money well spent, I say...

... because they took obscure beasties with tricky latin names and made them a whole lot more sexy, with names like the Skeetle, the Pixie gowns and Witches’ whiskers lichens and the queen's Executioner beetle.

UFO over Cambridge

Up in the sky, a triangular object. The other year, top secret South African attack helicopters flew into Cambridge for modifications. The local paper kindly printed photos of them for us.

Maybe this is another secret mod job caught in the act.

Sorry to disappoint you... I visited a company that makes ANPR systems, they had arabic plates in their lobby. Mud, arabic lettering, reflective paint - all tested regularly and well within their cameras' capability.

Government waves cutlass at IT budget

The trouble with public sector funding...

...is that they put in different pockets. Even in a small public sector company I worked at, they played one department's budget off against another as if they were separate incomes. As Mr Hobbs stated above, outsourcing has costs associated with it. For private companies, those costs are someone else's problem, so it still makes business sense even when the quality of the work is shoddy (2 out of 3 IT projects I have seen outsourced needed extensive rewriting). So while the Department of Heath trumpet savings in IT, the DSS scratch their heads at the influx of jobless IT workers. This is wrong thinking, it all comes out of one pocket, the pocket of Mr Taxpayer.

The next record...

...surely, it must follow, the UK record for the pat with the widest splat?
