Re: No business case
These kinds of devices are usually in addition to existing material and the company will have to pay for pay for the Hardware ( refreshed each 3 or 4 years ), Licences, Maintenance and Training and Support ( annual - Recurring costs).
By the way support will never be pushed onto the user, it always falls through to the IT dept. ( Unless you work in a tech company)
As for the cost of the device, I would like to see just how many users are willing to stump up 700 USD/ EUR for a device for the workplace...
I really don't see any long term cost efficiency coming out of this.. I would be interested in reading your Business Case in order to establish where you are really saving money.
The European Parliament
I have been a few times for a variety of reasons, I can't think of any other occasions on which that I have ever met such a large set of numties in one place..
As for Sunde, I am absolutely convinced that he would do any worse, if nothing else Bittorrent is well thought out, resilient and capable of surviving through the worst storms.
I will give him my vote.
Our El Reg hack shares the same family name as one of those star wars characters, mmmmhhhhh, something smells fishy here.
Is your wifes maiden name Fischer by any chance ?
Swinging back to the dark side.
The 63 year old man was dressed as which character ? Don't let me guess Obi Wan....
Re : Next stop...
I wonder if he now knows if there really is "Life on mars" ? Did he ever get the change to meet "Lady Stardust" , was she really the "Prettiest Star", does he have any aspirations of joining the "Spiders from Mars" ?
He truly knows the meaning of going from "Station to Station", although he is probably glad that he didn't use a "V2-Scheider" to get there, whilst he was travelling "Across the Universe".
I am convinced that he would have made "Ziggy Stardust" proud and I hope that the paparzzi never got a pic of him "Loving the Alien".
Would this not the make the companies that are
sending out spam advertising even more responsable, in a twisted kind of way, for the available of possibly copyrighted content to all and sundry for "free".
Whereas today you have to make a personal decision to use torrents, tommorrow you would actually be encouraged to do so.
I belong to that unfortunate // fortunate ( strike as necessary) group known as the over forties. For some reason I just can't associate Jim , Spock , Bones or Scotty with these young whipper snappers, they are too young, too clean.
<--- This is how I feel when I see these young fresh faces....
No network = No Work
What kind of work is someone doing in a company that no longer requries shared drives or printing ?. Or will they also be issued with 32Gb USB 2.0 keys which they will use to transport documents.
I can understand standalone machines on a factory workshop but it is difficult to imagine in a government office.
One or the other
HTC was the daddy for quite some time, Samsung passed them by and it doesn't look like catch up is going to be easy.
I had a couple of HTC phones and I liked them, they had a good solid feel about them, subsequently though, like many others, I moved over to Samsung. I started of the the TAB, then the NOTE and I now also have the S3 mini. I don't even bother to look at HTCs now. I have no real reason not to want to use a HTC anymore but they seem just to have lost their appeal.
I imagine that Apple and Samsung will end up down the same road.
Ever since their father taught them to "peep" out of the bedroom window the brothers couldn't last a day without a little peep. Sounds like something Gary Larson would have written.
Being a peeping tom is kinda creepy but doing it in collaboration with your brother. is just plain weird.
Re: Competition on Desktop
MS never really seemed to bothered about gaining any personal information, they make and sell software first and foremost. Their requirement for success was simply that a user required software and that they would sell it too them. Generally speaking, the story ends there.. With your money MS builds more software, albeit the same software every year. MS are only really available on MS platforms ( OK I know that MS Office exists for the Mac)
MS don't worry me, they can only take my money, if I decide to give them any
Google's on the otherhand don't really have a product. They have a platform that allows them to sell advertising space/places. In order to be, and remain, successfull they require an ever increasing amount of information, personal or not, about you and your habits. This allows them to provide tempting stats for their clients.
With your information Google does whatever it pleases for as long as it pleases..........Now this is where things get interesting as we do not realy know exactly how much information or exactlly what information they hold/archive and/or how that information is really used. Future employers, court judges, the FBI might just have access to this information which might not be perfectly in context and more than possibly be used out of context.
Google are not quite so easy to avoid. Google Search, Android, Google Play, Streetview, Maps, Chrome are just pretexts for gathering information, that's why they are "free" . Google have their own platforms and exist in almost all mainstream platforms. They have become just a little to omnipresent.
It's far easier to escape from MS than it is to escape form Google.....
Common sense !!
Should we also teach young children to be more androgynous ? Should we have more women on building sites ? Are there too many men in the army ?.
Some jobs will always have a natural tendancy to attract more men than women and vice-versa.
Equality is not always about equal quantity. Women have exactly the same possibility of moving into the tech sector, there are no barriers whatsover for them to begin a career. As mentioned there is almost 20% of women within the industry.
I hate these kinds of articles they smell more of PC than of common sense.
Re: Short term doesn't count
If there is one thing that I definately agree on it is the fact the we need to find solutions and then find a means of putting the solutions into action.
I believe that one of the major problems is due to the fact that we in the West have a very large share of the worlds wealth and we do not want to relinquish the luxuries that come with it. Although judging by the way things are going we are going to lose it anyway, and probably in the short to mid term..
Re: Short term doesn't count
I agree with what you are saying but I wonder if there are not better exercises that could possibly achieve a little more than a very shallow insight into other lifestyles.
Some extrapolation : Anyone that lives on £1 per day has a lot more to worry about that just eating, they also have to think about clothing, heating, sleeping, bills, fighting of the banks and debt collectors, lack of capacity to integrate into society etc etc etc etc ..... The list is so very long , will Lester also face all of these other "challenges".
I would suggest that it would be a far better exercise to give the people that do live that way a voice, a means of expression and that we sit down and "listen" to what they have to say. this would give a far better understanding of what it means.
In my most humble of opinions, it is not possible to pretend to be poor, it does not give a true reflection of what being poor really means.
I remember a photographic exercise that I was doing as a personal hobby in London a few years ago, I would take photos of the tramps and then sit down with them for a while listening to their stories. It was very revealing and their world was completely different from what I had previously imagined it would be.
I could have pretended to be a tramp for a week but it would never have taken me anywhere near the reality of what it truly means to be homeless.
Short term doesn't count
As much as I admire the general idea I feel that it is important to realise that 5 days hardships means nothing when you know that at the end of the period you can go back to living normally.
If you were to perform the same thing without knowing when it would stop that would be an entirely different matter.
In general those who have little, generally, can never see an end to their problem and it takes courage to create an appropriate exit.
Thumbs up for wanting to do something.
Thumbs down because it will end up just being a poor media stunt.
Google is a delivery service
Google have built a very powerfull "Advertising Delivery Service". Google does not create advertising they merely provide the support on which the advertising can be displayed, accessed, linked. They have built the engines , the databases, the data centers, etc that give advertisers the means to display their goodies on the InterWeb thingy.
They are most definately a tech company.
I won't comment on facebook or Twitter as advertising was an afterthought on both.
Pirates and prostitues
Must be two of the oldest trades in the world. I can't imagine either of them stopping in the near future.
Tell a prostitute that she can no longer stand on a street corner and she will move to the next street. Tell her that she is no longer welcome in town and she will move to the next town. ad infinitum.
I don't see Pirate Bay worrying any more than the prostitutes.
The seedy side of life is appealing to many, many people, It can never really be eradicated or stopped, it merely evolves with the rest of the population..
Search Engine Listing
These damned websites should also be forced lower down the web listing. It is becoming a PITA to get to the free pages, at least here in France it is. For example , you often have to click to the second page of results in Google in order to find the telephone number for your Doctors Cabinet for free....... ( replace Doctor with plumber, Electrician or any other common but vital service).
Google can be a bastard for this kind of thing.
67 Billion Reasons
It is easy to understand why one could easilly make such a faux pas when 67 Billion little devils push you into the trap. I doubt that he disrespects the Koreans I presume that is just his normal behaviour he must be walking about in a permanent high..
Now if someone would provide me with even half of his bank account I would be happy to do some testing to see whether or not I fall into the same pot.
