Re: if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck...
@I am sorry, anyone who thinks Donald in anyway resembled a real duck has never encountered a real duck.
Yes but he could be a Higgs Boson Duck.

[Do not read ahead withough having read the first line in this comment. you have been warned]
Since the CERN announced that they found the Higgs Boson I always had the "uneducated" feeling that their annoncement was far too media orientated. Almost as if they were in a position whereby they had to make a discovery in order to justify the expense.
It's a bit like the Big Data thing that is going on, we have loads of data, we can see things happening, we just don't know how to explain them, yet. So let's give it a name....
Very few people truly understand what the Higgs Boson actually is, could be, I certainely don't and I presume that the very large majority of the planet don't either. So how can we truly be sure of what has or has not been found. Are they just giving the name to something new and as of yet unexplained or have they indeed found what they are looking for.. Who is truly in a position to be the judge ?
These Danish scientists are challenging the finding which is a good thing. Science does not always come up with the correct answer the first time....
Uneducated : Other than having read ICE-9 I have no further education physics, quantum mechanics etc knowledge whatsoever, just a passing interest in what is going on in the region in which I live. If things went wrong in the Cern I always imagine that it could be kinda nasty...for humanity....it's the ICE-9 effect....
>if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck...
The problem is that you would have to know exactly what a duck was before a definitive decision could be made and even then there are many kinds of ducks...
Donald looked, swam and quacked lick a duck but was in reality only a 2 dimensionsal animated character.
Harmony, Lets have a look at my initial comment :
"You can't really drain an economy, you can merely change the distribution of who takes which percentage, overall the entire sum remains a constant."
In the above statement do you see the word "Wealth", no neither do I , so please stop referring to my usage of Wealth, I did not mention anything about wealth..
Wealth and economy are 2 different subjects even though that they posses a relation.
If you reread the comment - you will see that I spoke about the "distribution of percentages". When dealing with percentages it is a given that the sum of all percentages will be 100%.
I think it is obvious from my initial statement that the "economy" ie 100% of that which is in circulation, can never be more than 100% of itself. All that ever changes is how that economy is distributed. For example : 20% of the economy is held by the people, 40% by business and the remaining, 40% by the banks ( purely hypothetical figures) , not that the sum is of all that is available is 100%.
Tommorow this distribution of percentages might change, i.e. 43% to the people, 37% to business and the remaining 20% to the banks. Still this represents the same initial 100% percent of the economy..
All that has changed between the two scenarios of the "distribution of percentages". If the economy, at the given time, was worth 54 Trillion dollars in both scenarios this amount would not have changed.. Hence the usage of the word "constant".
>You said that only distribution of share in the economy changes, but that the entire sum of it is fixed. That is wrong.
I think that is quite obvious that we are talking about a fixed point in time and not over a period.
Obviously over a period the economy will change.
Did you actually see something in the comment that stated "that wealth is a fixed constant". I think not, please read again and try to understand rather than remain up high in the tree....
If you have a 1000$ to distribute there are many ways in which you can distribute it but you can not distribute more than the 1000$. Hence, the entire sum remains a constant. Therefore money spent on a car cannot also be spent of software. What I don't spend on software is availabe for other purchases. I am sure that you get the picture.
I don't recall having mentioned anything about the accumulate total since the beginings of time, inflation rates, stock markets adjustements or variable interest rates in my original comment. The lack of these variables removes the insipid thought of "stupid idea of wealth as a constant "
Most of the monkeys in the tree would have understood this, they were successful enough to climb down from the tree.
I read through the article thinking to myself, how much I would love to go to work like this. it's techy, it's fast, you get to travel (lol), you change locations each day but come back to base in the evening ( I presume).
Yes, definately looks interesting,a little bit unique and would certainely make a welcome change from my daily BAU office environment...
>Tim Cook bravely came out last week, sparking a a furious reaction from dickhead homophobes the world over.
If someone doesn't agree with the Homosexual lifestyle can please explain why that would qualify that person as a "dickhead homophobe"....
A lot of people don't agree with a lot of things in life but I don't understand why that should automatically qualify then as "dickhead <insert whatever you don't care for here> phobes".
Think yourself fortunate that you live in a place where contrary views are still possible.
By the way, what do you call homosexuals that really don't like all this media attention. Those that were quite happy to live quietly without all the media fuss. Are they "Dickhead Homophobes" too..
Yes, this kind of article really does piss me off, by it's attitude of "holier than though" more so than it's actual content.
I can sympathize with you, my wife is an avid gardener. BUT that is exactly the point I was getting at, if you can garauntee that everything will always be perfect you are removing half of the challenge..
There are obviously some plants, vegetables, fruits etc that are not suited to our climate, it's nature's way of adding variety, and hence are almsot impossible to grow correctly. Obviously with some electronic gadgetry things can be made to grow with a higher success though.. ( bit like pesticides really, I know there is a positive side but there is also a very negative side).
Something is in contradiction here. The idea of green fingered gaiens bowing down before the cult of the IOT......
What's next, adding a webcam and recieving alerts when it rains, is too sunny, a dangerous looking slug is in proximity.....
By adding technology and we removing the possibilty of failure the garden becomes a factory rather than a playground.
Whether you want it or not, there is not going to be any fappenings in VM residences from now on... You guys have no idea how lucky you are, it was horrible and I mean downright nasty...
Give VM some Facebook likes or Twitter tweeties for having them save you from the montrosity.
Quote from one of the greatest cinema monologues of all time ( well nearly, my excuses Mr Brando).
"I’ve seen horror, horror that you’ve seen. But you have no right to call me a fappener. You have a right to fap me. You have a right to do that, but you have no right to judge me. It’s impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means."
They have been doing it for years..
I read a short book about, what was at the time, one of Britains largest LSD factories which was located somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Wales.. I do not know if you know it but the bust itself was called Operation Julie, it's worth a quick read if you can get your hands on a copy...
Factory as in "operation" not as in building, as it was located in a small welsh cottage. LSD does not require a very large establishment to create huge quantities.. I think that a one litre bottle in the drinking water system is easilly enough to knock out the population of London, possibly more, for a couple of hours.
Yes, even taking it to the level of being the Super Root or whatever the top level Admin is thereby becoming the host of hosts... Which would then have the potential of created the worlds largest honeypot, provide an amazing piggybank full of Bitcoins and the equivalant of a top of the range Dyson SuperHoover for collecting user details...
Next time I want to invest in some Sativa, Indica or Ruderalis I'm going down the pub...
Is it TOR that is broken or have they managed to gain access to a database that holds all the names and address of the various parties ?
Or there is a super snitch, or the NSA have simply shared details of what they managed to gleen from the exit nodes that they pwned...
In any event some deep thought will probably now go into building a deeper, darker web...
The criminals, cough, businessman/politicians, cough, stand to lose too much if the TOR et al are not brought back into production...
I wonder how much this operation cost in relation to the catch
Wouldn't it far more cost effective and in the public's interest to de-penalize cannabis and de-criminalize Class A Drugs
The tax revenu from the cannabis alone would easily amount to several hundred times the magnitude of this small catch. This money could then be used to treat/support the serious addicts and there would still be some left over to pay for other public services. It would also free up police time in order for them to catch the truly serious criminals.
On the contrary the current Cannabis Lords and Class A top level distributors are living the life of Flynn whilst remaining beyond the reach of the law... No-one collects any taxes, the police are running around playing whack-a-mole and junkies continue to make life miserable for themselves and their families.....
[Or is it because some of them are actually in public positions, ie own private jets or have diplomatic immunity.....which would thereby cause some public outcry....]
I gave the article a quick read and from what I undertood the problem that worries them most is that the data is encrypted/decrypted, ie controlled, by a third party, in this case RIM. The servers/switches/routers are located in other countres and they are unsure about what actually happens behind the scenes.
The fact that they, the French companies, do not have control of the entire End to End process puts doubts into their heads about the security, which is completely understandable.
They have not actually demonstrated any problems or possible hacks, they simply do not have 100% faith and therefore prefer not to use BBs. As mentioned in the article they have their own methods of which they control one end to the other.
The same is true of any security process which uses a third party. If you do not control the entire process you can never garauntee the security.
>I can only presume that this is a marketing stunt.
After having a quick shufti through their other stuff, it is actually marketing. This is actually what these guys do, they make small films, and from the looks of some of them "extreme" is actually the leitmotif... Not porn extreme, just OTT extreme.
Some of them are quite well done.. especially the DroneBone one, there is a bit of something for everyone if you look closely.
On the Drone Boning videos the people are in unusual places, difficult to get to, or highly unlikely for a quick bit of nookie, and yet there are never any clothes, bags, jackets or anything else lying around. Everything is simply too perfect.
I can only presume that this is a marketing stunt.
>But does the name really matter
The names not only matter, sometime they are the product....
Try telling the Yoof that "Emporio Armani" jeans are not better than Lois ( even thought the denim is the same).
Do your Lacoste poloshirts last any longer than those at half the price.
Trying telling Apple to rename their phone.
Anyways, you get the meaning, the name really is everything in some cases.
Please, do not call a phone a "FairPhone". That's just pandering to the PC/Ethical crowd and thereby strongly limiting the market. [ The PC/Ethical crowd are cheap, so not a good target market].
Call it something like The Blade, Excalibur, The Matrix Black, something with a little bit of punch.... The Yoof would love it. The insides will still be nice and ecologic but at least it won't be so embarrassing to pull out the phone in front of others.
They have developed an API that spammers can purchase a direct connection to.
They have statistics to show that the percentage of people that actually manage to get a job through LinkedIn is smaller than a very small thing....( To the theme tune of BlackAdder obviously)
That LinkedIn is actually a tax avoidance scheme funded by Amazon.
That LinkedIn is actually just another NSA/GCHQ phishing site.
None of the above, they just found it to be incredibly underwhelming and that it is a far better idea to just nip of down the road for a quick Guiness..
> Do people forget that many city dwellers also have a country residence.....
>pretty sure if I had one I would not any phone signal whilst I was there.
Our home is actually in the country but both myself and my wife have an appartment in town(s), we work in different cities. The internet/telephone is our lifeline during the week. My wife has lots of vacation so she is at home for half of the time.......
And as much as I love being at home, I really, really wouldn't like to lose my connection. Think about it, no internet or phone during the weekends or holidays.....it's not as easy as it sounds.
The ISPs love us as we have to pay 3 Internet connection bills + 2 mobile phone bills, and no we are not millionaires or high flyers but life is not easy without a connection... We have the cheapest subscriptions to all and we do not have television.
>Dropped calls between President Obama to Prime Minister David Cameron
Was this really a Vodaphone technical problem or was it NSA/GCHQ problem. Please don't let us believe that D Cameron and B Obama use "public" landlines to call each other.
And now to get back onto the main subject. Why did it take this klind of problem to bring things to the surface. Aren't the "bumpkins" allowed to have the same services as everyone else. Do people forget that many city dwellers also have a country residence.....
Could be a Steyr Mannlicher Luxus with the wooden sideplates, could be either the Halfstock or the Halfstock Magnum version.
Judging this based in the bolt handle shape, the way that the magasine is slightly visible from the side and also the positon/form of the sights.
No idea about the caliber, could be anything from a .243 up to a 9,3x62 or even a .375 H&H depending on the total length of that barrel. ( 600mm or 650mm)
[Quite a bit more expensive than the Webley, lol ]
I was surprised that the article was longer than 160 characters and did not include hashtag or the mention of a social networking medium. Why because it seemed liek the kind of thing a 14 year old might try. [Don't read that last remark as being negative, it was not intended to be].
The article was interesting developing into solutions, albeit not very solid ones, of daily tasks that for me at least are not obvious. Let's not talk about the risk of using this medium.....
I honestly can't imagine anyone running aroung like this for more than a week without screaming and shouting to be let then into the madhouse. Mobile working from a tiny office such as this would be akin to putting a Big Game Hunter into a barrel and asking him to chase the ants out of the corners.
I do not beleive that it would be sustainable, or not for me it wouldn't, unless of course you are selling some illicit substances.
For some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, I really don't believe that the Oculus rift will be a success.
Up until now it's full of fat promise but apart from 1 or 2 games what other purpose will it serve. The physical "side-effects", when used over much larger audience will start to surface after quite a short period, they state that they have ironed out the problems but what else could they say anyway. I imagine that several people will quickly become very claustrophobic if the experience is really as powerful as the various YT vids show.
Of course, I could be 100% wrong but in any event I will not be
betting investing in these with my cash.
I can only presume that this will absolutely force the user use to have a "MS Live account", which then gives MS the power to terminate that users access at their leisure.. It also give MS the key to everything that you do, create, recieve via that account....
This give a very unfuzzy feeling.
[I do not know if "unfuzzy" is a word but it sounds correct to me for the context]
"The arrangement covers ServiceFirst, NSW Health, NSW Fire and Rescue, [NSW] Police, Transport for NSW, Department of Trade and Investment, Department of Family and Community Services, Endeavour Energy and Energy Australia,"
XP = 12 years old ( ok with patches and SPs its not quite that old but you get the point)
Does this mean that they have probably not done an IT refresh for about 5 years.. It would be interesting to throw a bad tempered security auditor in amongst that lot and see what interesting results he could come up with.
Brings on the image of grubby Mike Hammer kind of guys bashing away at outdated PCs, losing the rag and throwing the old beige monitors out of the 4th story windows, Sin city style.
In the UK you have had Muntjac for a long time. Muntjac(Mastreani) are a very small deer that have smalll tusks similar to the deer in the article.
I am just getting prepared to go deer hunting this morning, Roe Deer, so I will keep a look out for any of the "Bloodthirsty Herbivores...."
I regret that I am not intelligent/courageous enough to create something that was in competition with Google but without the lying, cheating, scare mongery , I'm so rich that I can sway any government tactics that Google employ.
Just how much money/power do they really need.
The facepalm is for me because Google make me feel very insignificant, probably because I am .
If you teach coding, you have to teach logic.
Teach a kid logic and he might improve his capacity for rational thought........from what I see nowadays this would be the last thing any contemporary government would want, although I am sure that Ayn Rand would just shrug and know immediately how to use then in her atlas.
>>It means that the GCHQ or Surete or Mossad have intercepted communications about the attack.
Wouldn't it be more advantageous for the GCHQ or Surete or Mossad not to inform the Mericans.
>>IP is a military installation, or resources are used which have been used by state hackers before (e.g. malware), spear phising mails designed with info not known to the public, or zero day exploits are used.
As I mentioned it could also be an inside job if there is inside information. Malware is easier to plant when you are already in the building and spoofing IPs is childs play for the Elite Govt Hackers ( The EGT are a theoretical group of hackers as no western Govt would ever admit to their existance).
>>The "Syrian Electronic Army" are Russian state hackers.
Yes possibly but the APT1(the Chinese), the Iranian Revolutionary Guard ( who control the largest comms network) and that German Hacking team ( they might have been white hats rather than black though) do exist and are very real.
>>US officials only became aware of the attack following notification by an ally.
Would love to know what this statement really means...
>>which bears the hallmarks of a state-sponsored attack
What is the difference between a state attack and a normal attack ? Do the State attacks have some kind of "Sponsored by IBM/Fujitsu/Sony" header attached to the packets whioch helps identify the nation ? Or is this just based upon IP addresses...
>>Russian hackers are among the most capable on the intelligence
Given the number of enemies that the good ol'USA has at the moment I think that there are far more than just intelligent Ruskies that are attacking them. The Iranians, Chinese, Syrians are not so dumb either... What's to say that it is not the Germans searching for retribution of the Merkela phone hacking scandal...
For all we know it might be a bloody FBI/CIA/NSA operation disguised as a pesky russian attack.
