@I am sorry, anyone who thinks Donald in anyway resembled a real duck has never encountered a real duck.

Yes but he could be a Higgs Boson Duck.

Thoughts from an uneducated person

<Flamebait warning>

[Do not read ahead withough having read the first line in this comment. you have been warned]

Since the CERN announced that they found the Higgs Boson I always had the "uneducated" feeling that their annoncement was far too media orientated. Almost as if they were in a position whereby they had to make a discovery in order to justify the expense.

It's a bit like the Big Data thing that is going on, we have loads of data, we can see things happening, we just don't know how to explain them, yet. So let's give it a name....

Very few people truly understand what the Higgs Boson actually is, could be, I certainely don't and I presume that the very large majority of the planet don't either. So how can we truly be sure of what has or has not been found. Are they just giving the name to something new and as of yet unexplained or have they indeed found what they are looking for.. Who is truly in a position to be the judge ?

These Danish scientists are challenging the finding which is a good thing. Science does not always come up with the correct answer the first time....

Uneducated : Other than having read ICE-9 I have no further education physics, quantum mechanics etc knowledge whatsoever, just a passing interest in what is going on in the region in which I live. If things went wrong in the Cern I always imagine that it could be kinda nasty...for humanity....it's the ICE-9 effect....

>if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck...

The problem is that you would have to know exactly what a duck was before a definitive decision could be made and even then there are many kinds of ducks...

Donald looked, swam and quacked lick a duck but was in reality only a 2 dimensionsal animated character.

Re: This is what it takes to get into the high security wing of your local clink.

Harmony, Lets have a look at my initial comment :

"You can't really drain an economy, you can merely change the distribution of who takes which percentage, overall the entire sum remains a constant."

In the above statement do you see the word "Wealth", no neither do I , so please stop referring to my usage of Wealth, I did not mention anything about wealth..

Wealth and economy are 2 different subjects even though that they posses a relation.

If you reread the comment - you will see that I spoke about the "distribution of percentages". When dealing with percentages it is a given that the sum of all percentages will be 100%.

I think it is obvious from my initial statement that the "economy" ie 100% of that which is in circulation, can never be more than 100% of itself. All that ever changes is how that economy is distributed. For example : 20% of the economy is held by the people, 40% by business and the remaining, 40% by the banks ( purely hypothetical figures) , not that the sum is of all that is available is 100%.

Tommorow this distribution of percentages might change, i.e. 43% to the people, 37% to business and the remaining 20% to the banks. Still this represents the same initial 100% percent of the economy..

All that has changed between the two scenarios of the "distribution of percentages". If the economy, at the given time, was worth 54 Trillion dollars in both scenarios this amount would not have changed.. Hence the usage of the word "constant".

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: This is what it takes to get into the high security wing of your local clink.

>You said that only distribution of share in the economy changes, but that the entire sum of it is fixed. That is wrong.

I think that is quite obvious that we are talking about a fixed point in time and not over a period.

Obviously over a period the economy will change.

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: This is what it takes to get into the high security wing of your local clink.

Did you actually see something in the comment that stated "that wealth is a fixed constant". I think not, please read again and try to understand rather than remain up high in the tree....

If you have a 1000$ to distribute there are many ways in which you can distribute it but you can not distribute more than the 1000$. Hence, the entire sum remains a constant. Therefore money spent on a car cannot also be spent of software. What I don't spend on software is availabe for other purchases. I am sure that you get the picture.

I don't recall having mentioned anything about the accumulate total since the beginings of time, inflation rates, stock markets adjustements or variable interest rates in my original comment. The lack of these variables removes the insipid thought of "stupid idea of wealth as a constant "

Most of the monkeys in the tree would have understood this, they were successful enough to climb down from the tree.

Re: This is what it takes to get into the high security wing of your local clink.

You can't really drain an economy, you can merely change the distribution of who takes which percentage, overall the entire sum remains a constant.

If someone doesn't agree with the Homosexual lifestyle can please explain why that would qualify that person as a "dickhead homophobe"....

A lot of people don't agree with a lot of things in life but I don't understand why that should automatically qualify then as "dickhead <insert whatever you don't care for here> phobes".

Think yourself fortunate that you live in a place where contrary views are still possible.

By the way, what do you call homosexuals that really don't like all this media attention. Those that were quite happy to live quietly without all the media fuss. Are they "Dickhead Homophobes" too..

Yes, this kind of article really does piss me off, by it's attitude of "holier than though" more so than it's actual content.

I can sympathize with you, my wife is an avid gardener. BUT that is exactly the point I was getting at, if you can garauntee that everything will always be perfect you are removing half of the challenge..

There are obviously some plants, vegetables, fruits etc that are not suited to our climate, it's nature's way of adding variety, and hence are almsot impossible to grow correctly. Obviously with some electronic gadgetry things can be made to grow with a higher success though.. I read a short book about, what was at the time, one of Britains largest LSD factories which was located somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Wales.. I do not know if you know it but the bust itself was called Operation Julie, it's worth a quick read if you can get your hands on a copy...

Factory as in "operation" not as in building, as it was located in a small welsh cottage. LSD does not require a very large establishment to create huge quantities.. I think that a one litre bottle in the drinking water system is easilly enough to knock out the population of London, possibly more, for a couple of hours.

Yes, even taking it to the level of being the Super Root or whatever the top level Admin is thereby becoming the host of hosts... Which would then have the potential of created the worlds largest honeypot, provide an amazing piggybank full of Bitcoins and the equivalant of a top of the range Dyson SuperHoover for collecting user details...

Re: TOR is compromised

Is it TOR that is broken or have they managed to gain access to a database that holds all the names and address of the various parties ?

Or there is a super snitch, or the NSA have simply shared details of what they managed to gleen from the exit nodes that they pwned...

In any event some deep thought will probably now go into building a deeper, darker web...

I wonder how much this operation cost in relation to the catch

Wouldn't it far more cost effective and in the public's interest to de-penalize cannabis and de-criminalize Class A Drugs

The tax revenu from the cannabis alone would easily amount to several hundred times the magnitude of this small catch. This money could then be used to treat/support the serious addicts and there would still be some left over to pay for other public services. It would also free up police time in order for them to catch the truly serious criminals.

On the contrary the current Cannabis Lords and Class A top level distributors are living the life of Flynn whilst remaining beyond the reach of the law... No-one collects any taxes, the police are running around playing whack-a-mole and junkies continue to make life miserable for themselves and their families.....

[Or is it because some of them are actually in public positions, ie own private jets or have diplomatic immunity.....which would thereby cause some public outcry....]

Ex-NSA lawyer warns Google, Apple: IMPENETRABLE RIM ruined BlackBerry

Re: What a lot of bol****

I gave the article a quick read and from what I undertood the problem that worries them most is that the data is encrypted/decrypted, ie controlled, by a third party, in this case RIM. The servers/switches/routers are located in other countres and they are unsure about what actually happens behind the scenes.

The fact that they, the French companies, do not have control of the entire End to End process puts doubts into their heads about the security, which is completely understandable.

They have not actually demonstrated any problems or possible hacks, they simply do not have 100% faith and therefore prefer not to use BBs. As mentioned in the article they have their own methods of which they control one end to the other.

The same is true of any security process which uses a third party. If you do not control the entire process you can never garauntee the security.

Some of them are quite well done.. especially the DroneBone one, there is a bit of something for everyone if you look closely.

They have developed an API that spammers can purchase a direct connection to.

They have statistics to show that the percentage of people that actually manage to get a job through LinkedIn is smaller than a very small thing....( To the theme tune of BlackAdder obviously)

That LinkedIn is actually a tax avoidance scheme funded by Amazon.

That LinkedIn is actually just another NSA/GCHQ phishing site.

Our home is actually in the country but both myself and my wife have an appartment in town(s), we work in different cities. The internet/telephone is our lifeline during the week. My wife has lots of vacation so she is at home for half of the time.......

And as much as I love being at home, I really, really wouldn't like to lose my connection. Think about it, no internet or phone during the weekends or holidays.....it's not as easy as it sounds.

The ISPs love us as we have to pay 3 Internet connection bills + 2 mobile phone bills, and no we are not millionaires or high flyers but life is not easy without a connection... We have the cheapest subscriptions to all and we do not have television.

Could be a Steyr Mannlicher Luxus with the wooden sideplates, could be either the Halfstock or the Halfstock Magnum version.

Judging this based in the bolt handle shape, the way that the magasine is slightly visible from the side and also the positon/form of the sights.

No idea about the caliber, could be anything from a .243 up to a 9,3x62 or even a .375 H&H depending on the total length of that barrel. ( 600mm or 650mm)

The article was interesting developing into solutions, albeit not very solid ones, of daily tasks that for me at least are not obvious. Let's not talk about the risk of using this medium.....

Oculus Rift tech-specs 'many months away' from hitting the shelves

Khaptain Silver badge

Will these really take off ?

For some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, I really don't believe that the Oculus rift will be a success.

Up until now it's full of fat promise but apart from 1 or 2 games what other purpose will it serve. The physical "side-effects", when used over much larger audience will start to surface after quite a short period, they state that they have ironed out the problems but what else could they say anyway. I imagine that several people will quickly become very claustrophobic if the experience is really as powerful as the various YT vids show.

Of course, I could be 100% wrong but in any event I will not be betting investing in these with my cash.
