Re: Antarcitc ice cap is NOT "growing".

There are other measurements besides GRACE.

No need for google, just a command prompt:

From WordNet (r) 3.0 (2006) [wn]:

grok

v 1: get the meaning of something; "Do you comprehend the

meaning of this letter?" [syn: {grok}, {get the picture},

{comprehend}, {savvy}, {dig}, {grasp}, {compass},

{apprehend}]

From The Jargon File (version 4.4.7, 29 Dec 2003) [jargon]:

grok

/grok/, /grohk/, vt.

[common; from the novel Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert A. Heinlein,

where it is a Martian word meaning literally ?to drink? and metaphorically

?to be one with?] The emphatic form is grok in fullness.

1. To understand. Connotes intimate and exhaustive knowledge. When you

claim to ?grok? some knowledge or technique, you are asserting that you

have not merely learned it in a detached instrumental way but that it has

become part of you, part of your identity. For example, to say that you

?know? {LISP} is simply to assert that you can code in it if necessary ?

but to say you ?grok? LISP is to claim that you have deeply entered the

world-view and spirit of the language, with the implication that it has

transformed your view of programming. Contrast {zen}, which is similar

supernal understanding experienced as a single brief flash. See also

{glark}.

2. Used of programs, may connote merely sufficient understanding. ?Almost

all C compilers grok the void type these days.?

From The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing (26 July 2010) [foldoc]:

grok

/grok/, /grohk/ (From the novel "Stranger in a Strange Land",

by Robert A. Heinlein, where it is a Martian word meaning

literally "to drink" and metaphorically "to be one with")

1. To understand, usually in a global sense. Connotes

intimate and exhaustive knowledge.

Contrast {zen}, which is similar supernal understanding

experienced as a single brief flash. See also {glark}.

2. Used of programs, may connote merely sufficient

understanding. "Almost all C compilers grok the "void" type

these days."

Re: Linux computer?

The switch between armv6 and armv7 is typically just a gcc flag or two away. And most people don't need to care, as system gcc already is configured with correct flags.

There is not that much speed difference between armv6 and armv7 either in most cases. Neon is sometimes useful, but armv7 doesn't guarantee that either.

Re: Ace in the hole

Actually due to the combination of big sensor and fixed lens they can machine the lens with 10 times more precision, which makes up for the small size. It truly is revolutionary, for some type of shots equaling DSLRs.

It's the GPU, not CPU

My Nokia C7 with its meager ARM 11 680MHz plays Angry Birds quite well, thanks to Broadcom GPU chippery.

AT&T ends illicit handset tethering

WTF?

Thesetelcos should learn from Finns

At least my Finnish operator provides unlimited data starting 10 Euros / month, and you can sign up for one month only. That gives me maximum 1Mbit down bandwith, but I can tether to my hearts content. By paying more I can get more bandwith.

That I call a fair deal.

Nokia C7 smartphone

Thumb Up

I like my C7

I crank out code for mobiles for living. Currently my main phone is C7, even when I have N8 and Nexus One as choices. C7 trumps Nexus One on battery life and display usability when outside. N8 is a little bit bulkier, that's why I prefer C7.

Also, according to my six year old, C7 runs Angry Birds the best, better than iPod Touch 3G or Nexus One. My subjective feeling on general performance is that I don't see a difference between C7/N8 and Nexus One.

Apple devices achilles heel is the interoperability in non-Apple world. With Linux as my main dev OS, both Symbian and Android are nice to work with.

Compatible with existing S60 apps?

I wonder if this baby will be compatible with the existing base of S60 apps? Speaking as an app developer ( http://mpaja.com ) I don't see how it would be possible without a slide-out keyboard...
