If I wanted a kitchen sink bloated windows manager I would use M$ windows. Only killer app imho from KDE is K3B but even its not worth 100 meg plus of libraries just to use. Many true geeks consider gnome bloated (xfce is a very tolerable windows manager under OpenBSD on usb stick fyi) but my god KDE is an order of magnitude worse than that.
And here I thought at least here in the States we were in a recession and compared to say food or rent for many people paying the Steve Jobs new shiny tax was pretty far down the list. I wish I had a customer base though fairly small number wise were incredible stupid with their money and would wait in long lines to throw it at me.
How dare this rabble rouser point out Jobs beloved business model of forced obsolescence. Its not enough Apple charges obscene markups but to keep Wall St happy they need to bleed the Mactards hard every few years on their beloved gadgets. Whats amazing is not Apples behavior (just good ole capitalists) but all the sheeple that actually wait in long queues to be the first to get shafted by Apple in the name of a "superior" experience (I guess certain people say same thing about S&M hookers).
Reading this about Nokia makes me just shake my head as almost the same story could be told about Infineon (which did personally affect me). Granted lots of other companies in other countries have self destructive bureaucracies (M$ being a prime US example) but continental Europe seems to nuture bureaucracy about as well as anywhere else in the world.

As a slight insider let me tell you Meego off the netbook is garbage. If the OS has to rely mostly on Intel software people I would say permanent life support as opposed to straight up dead. Intel is surprisingly bad in the embedded space these days software and hardware.
This will never see the day of light if it impacts negatively the way too big piece of the pie innovation tax scum sucking lawyers already get. Hard to see how you can improve the system much without doing so. Sadly history will say western civilization largely declined due to the greed of two professions, lawyers and bankers.
Lol how sad is it they are all proud that Sony has almost sold as many consoles as me too wanna be 1/3 failure rate Microshaft? Almost a 100 million less PS3 sold than PS2s. From best ever to third place in one generation also using a crap cpu even Apple know was full of fail (funny how IBM has quietly killed the Cell for all but PS3 production). I do enjoy some of the PS3 exclusives as they don't usually wind up on the PC in a few months like the Xbox. Too bad Sony has spent the last decade destroying the customer goodwill it spend decades before building up.

Because capitalism tends to work best with a democracy form of government and its fundamentally hard to trust the communist government not to interfere with business when it suits them. Though countries like South Korea and even the USA tend to push the envelope about proper separation of government and business (cough jingoistic Boeing deal).

Meetings: Because none of us are as dumb as all of us. A camel is a horse designed by committee. Maybe at one time groups of people could do wonderous things like go to the moon but with modern generations groups of people seem mostly to crash and burn. You can usually tell how overbudget and full of fail a project will be by the ratio of middle management (getting heads in trough and to defend their little fiefdoms) compared to front line employees. This may be at the heart of why the western world seems to be declining economically and in influence.
I thought the huge spike in food prices had more to do with it than Google. Heck one could argue the wikileaks cables showing that the former Tunisia leaders were even more corrupt and richer than their public image had more to do with this movement starting than Google. Sounds like autocratic Russia feels a bit threatened.
The OtherOS functionality always seemed pretty cool and very non Sony corporate to me. Then I found out they just did it originially to get the lower tariffs by claiming the PS3 was a computer. After this ploy failed they dropped OtherOS quicker than a pregnant girlfriend. Sony is a classic example of a company that does very little goodwill building with their customers and focuses solely on profit. To bad in the long term this tends to reduce your profit (how much has Sony made the last 3 years compared to say Apple?).

When Sony bought a movie studio you just knew their hardware was going to go to dog shit. Funny how media companies have a vested interest in controlling their customers who they consider thieves with draconian DRM. Funny also how customers tend to pick the hardware from the disruptive upstarts that don't play by the rules. Kind of how Sony was 30 years ago.
Yeah keep believing they do it to protect their customers. Kind of like when they protected their beloved customers (thieves the whole lot in their mind) with illegal rootkits and used their R&D to invent DRM so draconian that it pushed honest paying customers to pirate the game just to avoid the inconvenience (Spore, etc DRM) when its only purpose was to squeeze retailers from resale. Sony's customer first approach is probably they have sold 100 million less PS3 than PS2 and taken a bath on profits lately.
I love bashing M$ but their code quality is actually better than some other crap vendors out there like Adobe. Yes they mostly brainwash fresh outs with the M$ way but most of their really stupid mistakes where architecture design mistakes made to please the marketing wonks (deeply embedding IE into every OS they ship for example).

Yep here in America we are all huge M$ fans our favorite local company, never mind American hippy RMS largely pioneered the open source model that threatens M$. Long term propping up companies using governments tends to cause your growth rate to fall (when was last time west Europe grew %5 in a year). As for a European company taking over an American company and cutting jobs that happened with Chrysler twice and we were like meh. No China taking over stuff is another matter. Asia is the one destroying both our economies. Free trade sucks if you are the only one opening your markets.
Show me where ARM and even sadly AMD doesn't destroy Intel on performance per watt up until low end computers and especially considering the gpu functionality. Can't go into specifics but the Intel embedded platform I am currently developing software for on Meego is the most unstable half baked platform I have ever seen a company even release internally to developers. I wish I could solely use simulators as its hard to do regression testing when your core platform falls over constantly.
forgot to mention you keep talking in the future. This is what M$ say as about Phone 7. Late in the game for either to take over the world. Intel phones are a given only in Intel executives heads as for the other stuff unless Intel gets its crap together from what I have seen we are talking at least two years away.
On netbooks its loads very quick and though tinker toyish and though basically the distro for teen girls its ok. On tablets and other form factors lets just say if you can keep the OS running for more than a few hours you count yourself lucky. Lets just say at this time ARM has nothing to worry about both hardware and software wise on the low end.
Basically agree totally with the post except for the part of Itanium not being pathetic and dead as well (sadly at least SPARC actually had its heyday long ago, Itanium was a turd on arrival). SPARC has sucked for a very long time but at least at one time it was pretty common to see a few in different shops. Power I also see occasionally but have yet to see Itanium in any shops.
Anybody else skip most of article just to come to the comments to read Matty's rant. Still have to say SPARC is garbage has been since 2000 and every SUN shop I have been in, the developers loathe having to work on the SPARC boxes due to the sluggishness. Quite a bit of work can be found migrating apps from SPARC to x86-64 as nobody in their right mind or still having a job gave the go ahead to deploy any business critical apps on SPARC in about the last five years or so.
Granted we probably couldn't get to the moon again today with our inept project management and very numerous greedy heads all in the project trough destroying any project estimate. Still for all the merkin bashing most of those who are doing it countries have done far less in the last fifty years for advancing mans knowledge of things outside our own gravity well. We used to be great at least what the heck have you done lately?
Whether a company can legally do something (which Sony crosses all the time - see rootkit fiasco) and whether they should do something are two different questions. Perhaps Sir Stringer's reign at Sony has much to do with the goodwill hit and Sony selling 100 million less PS3 than PS2s. Not to mention as well as losing billions. Sony hardware used to be cutting edge now its just overpriced DRM vendor locked in crap. They will always have fanbois but unlike Apple not enough to keep them on top.
