Re: ISS MkII

Can someone explain why they have to decommission it at all?

Openreach's cunning plan to 'turbocharge' the post-Brexit economy: Getting everyone on full-fibre broadband by 2025

I see there's a proposal to encourage new-build residential homes to have FTTP built-in, and economic benefits are claimed. Surely there would be far more economic benefit from mandating all-electric heat-engine central heating systems in new-build homes? And across the whole country this would dramatically improve carbon footprint and give substantial job creation. Besides, we'd all be cozier in our homes. Don't get me wrong, I'm not disputing that we all need more bandwidth, I'm just saying that if you're mandating policy for new-build homes, heat-engines would be #1 benefit and better fibre # >1.

It's Prime Minister Boris Johnson: Tech industry speaks its brains on Brexit-monger's victory

No, there's only one journalist that Bojo has ever given a toss about, and he's now retired from journalism, although still doing his (very) creative writing (and talking).

Re: What's that sound ? Brexiteers expoding.

Thank you for your honesty, at least. It is interesting that you introduced skin-colour into the argument, which can be summarized as: "I voted for Brexit so we can have less white I.T. workers, and you're a racist".

GoDaddy CEO says US is 'tech illiterate' (so, yeah, don't shut off that cheap H-1B supply)

Re: just wondering...

No, I got one in 1986. And Bell labs brought me over to Noo Joizy because they wanted to pay under the market rate. BTW I took a 30 or so % pay cut to "experience the States". Nothing has changed.

- Simple remedy has been proposed. Every application charged $5k regardless of result. The "winners" are selected on basis of highest pay TO THE EMPLOYEE (very much like a T-Bill auction). This would enable FB, Google to get good guys on $250k, and prevent TCS / Wipro from taking a 100% mark-up on a junior tekky on $50k.

Carly Fiorina makes like HP and splits – ex-CEO quits White House race

I neither know nor care what she's professed herself as - that slime has no clue about feminism, or anything-else-ism. She's a disgusting brainless turd with no clue about anything. And - dread - who knows what her next trick will be, after they wafted her stink out of (a) ATT (b) HP (c) cal senate race and now (d) god help us the republicans primaries?

Erik Meijer: AGILE must be destroyed, once and for all

Agile/Scrum becomes the cuckoo in the team's nest

So much time, money and sweat goes in to Agile/Scrumming that everyone gets too fatigued to do the real work of keeping the effort properly guided. "Real" leadership is crowded out. I've never seen Agile/Scrum consume less than 20% of a team's time. That may be an understatement too. In this article and elsewhere it has been widely commented that if stand-up happens at 10am, everyone's "flow" is utterly ruined thru the whole morning. You might end up diluting your resources by half!?! I've noticed an uncanny trend, that "where Scrum is, real software project management isn't". The Scrum rubric actually alludes to this, something like "Now you have a scrum-master, you don't need a project manager anymore", which is demonstrably nonsense.

Re: A shame

He was a guy dishing out $$ to an Independent Contractor in the Service-Oriented area. Probably half of El Reg's readership are in such a situation..

We're all hos, and if you think you're not, there's a psychological problem.

Sweet, sweet smell of comments in code?

jon battle

Comments about comments

- Hmm I guess the theory is clear enough: if the code were self-explanatory, you wouldn't need to explain it with comments.

- But in practice, when I read zillions of lines of code, I find the guys who do zero-comments are precisely the same guys who write incomprehensible code that begs for comments.

Asus to offer Linux-less Eee PCs globally

jon battle

Anon, do the SODIMMs upgrade to 4G? Really?

- if it does, thanks for telling me what the specs I saw didn't.

- svp the URL thanks

jon battle

Where do Asus engineers get their drugs from?

If they just exposed 2 SODIMMs for customer to fill as he likes, the how-much-RAM saga goes away. If they just exposed an SD socket for the customer to fill as he likes, the how-much-silicon-drive saga goes away. Then they could concentrate on making and selling computers. I happen to need 4G RAM, the next guy might want 1G. Why should Asus care? Likewise the silicon-HD. Just sell us a box, you idiots.

- The same applies to the OS. I want linux, I neither know nor care who wants windoze- just stick in whichever you need.
