Re: Don't be fooled!

Highly disappointed on not seeing an Eadon Pavlovian response.

Here goes

"Anything Open Smoke is far superior, the desktop is cleaner and makes for easier skinning.

Even without usual skins the basic set-up of a hollowed-out carrot makes for a better user experience."

But I'd argue against as OpenSmoke has products that are poorly hashed and over-seeded with a need to build up a list of reliable vendors of quality product. Prices do not necessarily mean quality and OEM can be hit or miss.

As usual there are plenty of so-called 'experts' with home-grown systems but few have the nous or patience to produce a quality product. So much merchandise is rushed out before being properly tested and ready, it is a bit of a gamble. The Chinese produce container-loads of alternative products but many of those have a hidden payload.

How did you cope when BT moved to Yahoo! with Talk21?

Seamless for me, will it change?

Hotmail seemed to be far more of an inconvenience for this.

"My experience of the BT Yahoo site has been confined to situations where I begrudgingly have to help hopeless relatives and in-laws. You know the types, they still insist on using Internet Explorer and have installed every unnecessary tool bar they can find just to make it even more frustrating. They get annoyed if you install a better browser because they'll decide that something different is 'broken'."

And to think that's pretty much what I've just posted -- though I've remembered that they also 'have' to use Chrome to use Gmail .

I realise now why they find Firefox confusing -- it isn't 'Email'.

Elmer Phud

"Finally - they have been pestered with emails about "upgrading" to the new Mail interface (which it seems they already have) with warnings about loss of email if they don't upgrade - I hope for their sake that they don't have to follow any more steps to transition to whatever new service BT are going to be using - but somehow I just can't manage to find the faith that BT will not royally screw this one up."

I've been wondering about that.

What is this new interface they are on about?

Is it the rearranging of the web-mail page? -- world+dog seem to be using the same sort of look.

I've still got a Talk21 account -- been waiting for ages for that to go.

I have been out to sort out 'missing contacts from Internet Explorer' -- they use IE on XP (unsupported) for getting to Hotmail. It took a while to explain that along with not having to change their mail address from Hotmail, all the contacts were still there but not quite where they were before.

(no, they are the same age as me)

4. Provide better healthcare for the developing world so those babies survive"

I agree with Beelzebub's Eggnog that there is a certain amount of The Pub Landlord's wisdom that 'they haven't thought it through'. I Also think were a being incredibly two-faced as we go on about how we 'started the industrial revolution' but seem to fail to admit that it was only by producing toxic gases and materials, by polluting the rivers and land, by enforced poverty and pretty much slavery and by having a large population of readily available replacements for those we killed or got too sick or were maimed that we became The Empire.

We then told the rest of the world that 'this is how it's done' and they went 'Ta for that' and took our advice.

While this was going on the local 'industrial revolution' hit the buffers before the 1950's and we now look down on those who are merely emulating our road to success.

We caused this pile of poo in the first place and are now trying to blame it on others for doing the same.

Hence, 'two -faced'.

Think of all the money spent on cleaning up a small part of the River Lea for the Olympics - how much back slapping went on and then remember why it had to be cleaned up.

Spam and the Byzantine Empire: How Bitcoin tech REALLY works

Elmer Phud

Re: What it's for

"Which is one reason governments hate Bitcoins and would like to kill them off if they could. Their propaganda (with more than a grain of truth) is that Bitcoins aid money launderers and tax evaders. Their other reason is that if Bitcoins flourish, it will be at the expense of all governments' ability to print their own money, and thereby rob (or tax) us all by inflation."

An old friend used to work at BACS.

They had a project to see how fast transactions could be made across the globe.

When the team did a presentation showing they could easily do it in under 20 seconds the project was pulled as there wasn't enough time to bounce the money around in order to generate sufficient profits.

It isn't the money but the movement of it that generates the swill for the trough.

It is indeed, there is nothing new about large companies having the ear of the government.

It's how we built the Empire and it drives the eagerness to sell arms and ammunition and road schemes and the like.

Whatever next, people moaning about how it all changed from manufacturing to service industries?

But then, they bought the privatisation scams and being all puffed up at being called 'stakeholders'.

Are we now to think that the advertising is just a load of guff (though it has to be passed as being vaguely honest) and that we ought to rely on something resembling the 'detectors' used by companies trying to flog

Or will the fickle public still not understand that the 'app' (with hardware) is not something new and mysterious and all-seeing but just another lump of code designed to work on some sort of guilt complex instilled/installed by the manufacturers.
