Can we have a proper study of Wi-Fi, please?

Rob

Would be interesting to see if...

... the ones claiming to be sensitive have not only been tested with Wi-Fi and mobile phones but also DECT landline phones as they run on the 2.4 frequency as well, but I'd be pretty sure that they wouldn't complain about them as the technology doesn't fit the same category. I'm not dismissing the fact that some people could be more sensitive than others (my wife suffers from ME, basically meaning her spleen and maybe a couple of other organs are slightly deficient).

Also do the sensitive suffers suffer on a daily basis from all of the natural radiation currently being emitted by the planet, (this radiation being the sort that helps young humanoids develop a thicker skull into adult life).

Still too many questions and not enough highlight on radiation that is actually beneficial on a daily basis to human development.

Mobile TV will reach 244 million by 2011, says report

Rob

Doubt it...

... will get that sort of revenue/be that successful. But on the other hand I'm not quite sure of the stats concerning the MTV generation, which will be the only hardcore audience.

I still can't see how the networks will be able to sustain that sort of usage that they are indicting in the report.

Illinois baby issued with firearms permit

Rob

I wonder...

.... if gun manufacturers have tested their products for baby dribble, personally I wouldn't want to wrestle a dribble covered gun from the tot (probably have bits of food stuck to it as well... I think I'd rather be shot).

US in The Long Good Friday remake outrage

Rob

Rubbish

"Following continued interest from the US, we realised this remake could attract audiences worldwide with an updated setting and contemporary overtones."

Bollocks, the retirement fund needs topping up you mean.

Everything has to be dumbed down for the Americans, I also rest my case.

iPhone demand in the UK is 'soft', survey finds

Rob

Who cares what survey you believe....

.... your still only talking about a couple of thousand people that might go out and buy the phone, that figure doubling if the phone is under £200.

I think a lot of people will also realise this phone isn't bringing anything new to the market that's not already available. As a previous comment mentioned "new suit".

Already big mistakes are being made, if T-Mobile take the phone on it's a real shame that Apple didn't implement 3G as thier all-you-can-eat data tariff is perfect for surfing/downloading/wotnot using a 3G phone.

As with all Apple products they always put more emphasis on looks than implementation and functionality, which is a shame cause they could kick arse if they got it all together.

US forces to block YouTube, MySpace on DoD network

Civilian Life....

... I think it's still a lot easier than being shot at by angry arabs who are still going through teen angst.

About that TV service, Mr Branson...

Rob

Gavin Hamer...

... clearly has more money than sense and thanks to numpty's like him we will continue to live in "Rip-Off-Britain".

This article just resonates the complete lack of service all Virgin brands are now offering to paying customers. I have experienced a number of Virgin products and services and they have all been substantially less than what I have paid for compared to what the competition could have given me and yes I don't use Virgin anymore because of these experiences.

It's about getting value for money not being greedy, do you work for the government on IT projects by any chance?

No end in sight for Vista's Long Goodbye

Rob

UAC

It's a good idea and will be a good addition to security, once MS have got it bug free. In the meantime though I'm running Trendmicro's AV, Firewall and Spyware protection so I'm happy to switch UAC off until it's working properly, never had a problem since and removed most of the issues with older software (games included).

Come on MS, sort UAC out.

Essex University offers online degrees

Rob

Sounds great on paper...

.... but as most distance learning providers have found in the UK it doesn't make a lot of money, I work for an FE College, we had distance learning courses established about 5-6 years ago but gave them up due to high maintaince costs and low number of enrollements which means less money from the government.

Also distance learning isn't really developed enough compared to the internet technology actually available.

Sir Alan Sugar unveils East End supercomputer

Rob

media studies...

... just goes to show he's right, when the sun journo and editor allow typos to get through to the final print version. (I know the El Reg do it as well, but I like them I and I don't like the sun).

Most media students are useless and are doing the course as an easy cope out, plus they all think they will get loads of money and fame from it when they enter the market (it is a massive generalisation, but more or less true, I used to teach media related courses). The truth being that there isn't much money in media and the average media industry worker isn't that much better off than say their counterpart in IT.

Researchers, spooks favour satnav-based road pricing

Shielding

GPS is hardly reliable... if you want to shield a GPS unit that's mounted inside your car (a-typically on the dash) then just make sure you have a windscreen with sufficient heatshield properties to help block/delay the signals, make it worse my switching on the heating and directing it at the windscreen.

Also to effectively get round the system, drive your car into a garage (no signal) modify the GPS unit with a shield (some heavy metal case that looks like the original) and the government will think your car never leaves the garage.

This GPS road taxing scheme is just yet another government idea involving technology that seems destined to fail, not unlike any other government IT project.

You want to talk about intelligent shielding, how about shielding the government from their crazy over paid technology consultants that seem to dream up useless ways of justifying their wage while wasting tax payers money.

I work in an educational institute at the moment and not one of my IT projects has involved over spending or missing it's deadline (it's not that hard), so I can quite happily sleep at night knowing I have spent your money (and mine) well.

Second Life: the campaign for real life

Rob

Here, here...

... yes I agree that virtual world interfaces will grow, but please, please, don't let sado's like the 2nd life contingency lead the way or we're all doomed.

'As I watch England turn into a quivering pile of dung'

Rob

Inferior US troops...

The Pro US lobby tends to get a bit worked up when they see our troops doing a professional job, it makes them jealous as they look at their frat house idiots running around with guns and music blaring and fire off bullets indiscriminately.

Sinclair ZX Spectrum: 25 today

Rob

Someone else remembers Input Magazine !!!!!!

I still have a couple of issues put aside for posterity. Look out antiques roadshow :)

Teachers demand Wi-Fi health investigation

Rob

Too depressing for words...

.... well just a few anyway.

Retarded teachers, retarded children, we're all screwed and this society is going down the pan faster than the aftereffects of a vindaloo kebab bought from the van outside the pub the night before.

I used to teach but quit cause teachers moan too much about nothing.

BA edits Branson from Casino Royale

Rob

Just the film...

So let me get this straight, he's only been edited out of the film not life in general.... shame, it's of no use to anyone and his brands are next to useless.

High level Night Elf druid saves PC gaming

Rob

Unfortunately Nerds sell the market...

Without them going out in fever'd panic to get the latest console so they can show off to their mates and be all geeky about it, the consoles wouldn't sell at that price and the average joe wouldn't then take the lead from the foul-smelling geeks and buy the console also.

I'm guessing if the Nerds suddenly shifted their focus back to PC's then the great washed joe public would take that lead and follow also. I'd be interested to know how much of the PC market is actually made up of Joe Public sales and not geek sales.

We've yet to see the long term effects of having your hands cramped round a console controller for hours at a time on the younger generation. If bad posture can help a PC user get RSI or carpel tunnel, will the future of the NHS be wrist operations and fat suction on 2 for 1 offer?

Google bugles death of Froogle

Rob

You are joking

"While I understand that non-English speaking countries would miss the point, it's very sad that people don't understand that Froogle is a decent pun/play-on-words."

Non-english speaking countries!! Most of the youth today in the UK wouldn't understand it either and that's nothing to do with cross culture, it's to do with the fact that most of our youth are just generally thick, thanks for that MTV, YouTube and such like.

Hi hon, I'm on d plane

Rob

Making it easier for the terrorist...No?

So the terrorist doesn't have to be on the plane now to activate the bomb, they can safely phone/text the mobile thing that activates the bomb from the safety of their living room/hideout/government office*.

* delete as appropriate

Also when do you find out the Pica cell isn't working, when you get home to a roaming bill of a few hundred pounds?

Also (swear this is the last one), from what I've read it's going one below cattle class, the carriers I've read that will be trialling it are chav class, don't think I need to paint a picture of what the conversations will be like onboard those planes.

Amazon pushes sex toys to random punters

Rob

Sheltered upbringing

I'm still reeling from the fact that Amazon sell sex aids/toys.

(it wasn't that sheltered)

Neighbours from hell will be sent to boot camp

Got the T-Shirt thanks...

"I just feel bad for the U.S. and U.K. citizens (as well as the rest of the world). Imagine what will happen when both the U.S. and U.K. government realize that they both want the same thing -- to take over the world."

Been there, done that. Was far too much grief, so we gave up the Empire, just like the Dutch before us, they knew it was too much grief as well. We're just waiting for the US gov too realise it too, if they ever do.

We could do with lining the US and UK gov up against a wall in Iraq and just leaving them there, human nature will do the rest.

UK's lags bemoan Freeview channel blackout

Rob

Not quite....

"And McDonalds and Pizza Hut and all sorts of greasy foods. But no weights, basketball courts or handball courts.

Let them come out of prison as fat blobs with high cholesterol. That's a good way to protect the public.

Okay, I'm not from the UK, but I suspect many would agree with me."

Nice idea... but in reality, we'll not only have to carry them as jobless Chavs but we would also have to carry them on the NHS, of which obesity is the biggest problem (no pun intended), followed by alcohol and smoking related illnesses coming in third.

Shame we don't see add campiagns on how to quite eating and promotion of eating patches.

Virgin Media chucks rocks in 'unlimited' debate

Rob

Virgin upfront my arse!

Virgin brand maybe upfront about their small print but they make up for that by having useless staff that will make a complete hash of anything service or product you're buying from them, Media, Holidays, you name it.

We have a bouycot on all Virgin brands because of there useless services.
