Hasbro fails to win Asus Transformer Prime ban

Rob

Re: Marketing

"There IS such a thing as bad publicity outside the media world you know."

Your right there is indeed bad publicity, but when your target audience is an age group that probably don't know what a patent dispute is but Mum and Dad have been talking about it because it's in the news, that is what you call Brand Awareness, especially as it could lead to a sale, or get the kid talking about the product line the next day with their mates. Besides that's just your interpretation of it, not everyone thinks like you (thank fck).

There are sliding scales of publicity that may seem bad but in fact still do you some favours. Apple's been getting a hammering in the courts and Apple has been hammering Samsung, yet I don't think either have suffered any negative brand awareness in fact for both of them it's been a positive effect in some cases, either way I don't see their share price going south or their products gathering dust on shop shelves.

Marketing

Let's face it, this seems rarely about patent/copyright now and more about marketing nowadays.

Hasbro now has there name in the news and it's pointing to one of it's main product lines, if they settle out of court I bet the figure will be close or cheaper than a marketing campaign to achieve the same brand awareness goal.

Rob

Jack of all, master of none

I think past 2020, you'll have a real need to be flexible in the early days of your career leading to a specialisation later on in life. The toughest choice will be to decide which tools you like using the most (i.e. computers, ovens, mechanics tools, farmers tools etc) and go from there.

Google's Android 'let down' sinks iPad rivals - IDC

Rob

@ AC Re: Peole don't say tablet - they say iPad

I don't think you read the original post correctly. I read it as not liking the fact that the surveys main premise for consumers not buying more Android pads was because of the App market maturity. But thinks the main reason Apple sell more iPads (note the poster doesn't actually believe Apple haven't got the market share), because Apple have rather shrewdly been able to define the language and expectation for the tablet market before Android could even get in the starting blocks.

(Don't worry I don't think anyone spotted that in your haste to have a go at someone else you ended up looking too much like a fanbois yourself.)

Completely get your point and agree to an extent, but you'll have to forgive my usual soapbox rant about "parent responsibilty/liability".

Rob

Re: "legally old enough to buy."

Your right there is no legal age limit for PAYG phones as no contract is involved, but you'd be hard pushed to find a shop that will sell a PAYG handset to someone who looks too young without a parent with them, mainly because the handset in question wouldn't have been set-up with age restrictions in place by default and the shop/brand would probably be liable if something bad happened.

Sorry should have worded my original post better.

Re: Not surprised but

"... the onus should be on the developer and advertiser..." missed a bit, let me help you...

"... the onus should be on the parents to ensure all measures are taken to protect children from this content and supervise them when necessary."

There are apps out there to make your device child friendly and stop them from accessing content you don't want them too. It might be a bit hard to convince the advertisers and developers about responsibility as they will assume most 7 year old don't have the money to buy these devices and in the case of a mobile phone aren't legally old enough to buy.

Apple vs Bank of China in iPad Shanghai showdown

Rob

Re: Re: Re: Even as an non apple lover

@Steve the Cynic, I just got back from a good laugh outside, think a bit of wee came out...

... it's alright, just checked no wee. No the surprise here is that you think the high court has the power to ignore the Gov't, which clearly it hasn't as you've just stated, they'll be into anything involving foreign business dealings (or more importantly, contributing to China's GDP). So either way the Chinese Gov't isn't getting involved like the post I was replying too was suggesting.

So no I seriously don't.

Rob

Re: Even as an non apple lover

From what I've read, the Chinese Gov isn't really getting involved in this, after reading the headlines of this article I was partially expecting the Bank to step in and swing some arms with the backing and endorsement of the Chinese Gov but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Re: 8 minutes

Depends on whether the map is going to alert you to any traffic conditions on the way, also might be useful if the map shouted directions whilst trying to drive a few tons of death at high speeds through populated areas, I suppose the other ambulance personnel could read the map on the way, but if it were me I'd prefer them to be looking out for people that get rabbit syndrome when they see flashing blue lights and freeze in the wrong place.

Just some suggestions as to why a satnav might be better in this situation.

Don't get it

Why only an iPad app, I understand that iPads are very popular and have market shaer of the tablet market at the moment, but surely a big corporation like Sky could afford to dual develop on both iOS and Android. It's not like they don't understand how many people have Android and there want because the all the Android users in the Sky forum are giving them a slating for not have the streaming app on Android yet.

It just seems good business sense when you have the resources to do it, that way you have the market share on Android for the smartphone market and the iOS share on the tablets.

Apple vs Amazon in ereader format smackdown

Market Forces

If this is all about the consumer then surely Kindle will keep it's hold of the market if we're just comparing Apple and Amazon (which is what the article is all about). Amazon have a Kindle app for most devices meaning you can consume your book on Apple, PC, Android and others whereas Apple iBooks is for Apple only devices. It is all too similiar to why Apple is losing ground with it's iPhone brand against Android smartphones, so many more devices at so many different price points, once that momentum is there it's hard to claw it back, a prime example being the stranglehold on the world by MS Windows.

Me personnally, I don't mind the Kindle platform I have the app's on my devices and I bought my wife a Kindle reader, but I also have a number of ebooks from the earlier days that I have committed to epub but can still read those on my various devices, which is the preffered format that Google uses on it's marketplace (that or PDF, which can also be read by Kindle).

I just get the impression as far as this article is concerned that the Brand war has already been won, but yes the format war might continue.

Cabinet Office moves step closer to killing Directgov

Rob

@Chris 3

Unfortunately that isn't compliant with the EU directive, the audience still needs to be able to view the website without any cookies being dropped otherwise you are moving into Discrimination legislation. I'm pretty sure the ICO won't be happy if websites are holding people to ransom..."accept our cookies or piss off" is not the way to go.

I think the reason they have done it this way is that they desperately need the analytics for obvious reasons and unfortunately the analytics cookie is in the firing line as well, even if it is used for decent purposes.

Sky to open net telly channels to all

According to the latest forum post...

... Sky have said that it's sheduled for release next month, I think they underestimated how much need there was to develop an Android version first, but most companies do that nowadays. Marketing 101, look at who has the lion share of the market and develop for it first.

Unfortunately I know of far too many instances where parents don't monitor/supervise kids usage on the internet from a young age, my comments weren't directed out of any Apple bile. So the "obviously not" is fine for people with common sense but that is in a recession as well nowadays.

P.S. Good on ya for reading books with the little'un, I don't think enough parents do that anymore either, although reading the same book again and again everynight, does drive me up the wall, especially when you have to do 'voices' for the characters as well.

Apple to conquer connected TVs? Steady on, lad

Rob

@Matthew17

Definately check for a firmware update, it's almost essential nowadays as Blu-ray is still not a settled format and a discs playability depends on it's producer. I found out recently my last firmware update for my BD player broke the auto update function, when I looked at the manufacturers support website I was well over a year behind. Downloaded to USB and plugged it in, updated it and now I feel like I have a new BD player, response and play disc times are dramatically improved and a few a discs I have that were being a bit stubborn now play flawlessly.

Also check your settings as I went into my mine awhile back and told it not to contact the internet for BD extra content which again also speeds up disc access time as it's refused straight away and doesn't bother even checking so gets on with playing the disc.

Rob

@Richard

You missed the other more obvious hurdles for Apple TV to get over, specifically the Xbox and PS3 which have good saturation in the UK and offer more than Apple TV does including playing fairly nicely with DNLA with home networking kit. Granted Xbox has just upped it's game by adding channel 4 and 5 catch up service along with iLovefilm and iPlayer apparently on its way later this year. In terms of value for money I would probably buy a console instead if I had to make a choice now.
