Everything Everywhere's 4G: Why I'm sitting this one out

Dick Emery
Thumb Down

Sucky coverage

My parents live in a cul de sac called Iwade near Sittingbourne. Whenever I visit I get no signal if I am downstairs. Even out in the garden. I have to go to the next floor up to get 1 or 2 bars. I complained to Three but it was pretty pointless. They don't plan on fixing coverage for 2G let alone 3G in that area at all. Much like broadband it seems they are only interested in largely populated areas.

UK ice boffin: 'Arctic melt equivalent to 20 years of CO2'

Alert

Annoyed!

Every time this debate rears its ugly head in the media I get really annoyed. Why? Not because I don't believe it. But because it is used as a bludgeon by certain parties (Greenies and other political interests) to put the willies up the general populace. Yet another means to subjugate the people. I bet the stasi are rubbing their hands together with glee including the energy companies readying themselves to raise the costs again (and probably getting nice government kickbacks in the process). Self justified by them having to 'invest' more into 'greener' energy extraction techniques.

Meanwhile in China and other rising economies anything 'we' supposedly do to prevent climate change will be made to seem totally useless whilst wrecking our own economies in the process. I can see why the USA is pretty much not interested in participating in our delusional climate treaties.

BTW I love the term 'fracking' being somewhat of a BSG fan. :)

Ten digital radios to suit all budgets

Re: Bah humbug!

Oh and just been listening to that Linn radio station and on the third track it got stuck in a digital (CD?) loop. Kinda amusing for a site promoting Linn products.

Bah humbug!

Oh well. When they finally decide to turn off FM (which they probably will so they can sell even more spectrum to mobile operators to fill the government coffers) I will just listen to prerecorded music.

Dredd movie review

Dick Emery
Thumb Down

This ain't Dredd

It's a pale imitation of. I preferred the Stallone version even though Stallone took his helmet off and had the wrong voice. At least it was futuristic and loyal to the look and feel of the comic strips (the only notable exception being the lack of eagle shoulder pads).

I thought the 3D detracted from the movie too.

Time waits for no man

By the time any deficiencies in the patent system are addressed we'll have new novel innovations to contend with and more loopholes to be exploited. The problem is that the system does not move fast enough to keep up with technology.

Patent system not broken

I would not say the patent system is broken per se. I would say the way the system works to benefit large corporate interests is. When you are super rich you can afford to hire a team to sit there all day scouring for things that are not patented. Create your own patent on ideas that have not yet come to fruition. Or. Although has prior art nobody actually patented yet and pay what is a relatively small fee (to the corporation but not the average guy) and sit on it if not yet invented in the hope you can extract royalties later. Or. Use it right now (as in the Apple vs Samsung cases) to sue those who did not patent it first.

It's actually relatively expensive and time consuming for the small guy to patent stuff. Even looking up whether something has already been patented is a bit of a chore and cost. But for large corporations it's their bread and butter. Apple have found a unique corner of the market in this respect.

Apple is abusing the system (like many other large corporations do). There should be a law in place to prevent this type of behaviour.

YouTube video has NOT killed radio's star

Dick Emery
Stop

Radio is everywhere.

Usually radio stations are playing in the background in various establishments, playing in cars, on the TV and all sorts of places and can be consumed without having to resort to looking at a computer/tablet display. I know songs that I didn't go out of my way to find but hear them another time and immediately recognize them even if I don't know the name of the artist or song name. I wonder to myself where the hell I heard it because I don't listen to much radio at home or in the car. So I must have heard them elsewhere.

Lovely update failures

The initial update resulted in 8 failed updates. From Googling this is a common problem on the 64bit platform.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/windows-7-ultimate-wont-install-updates/4a5c1dbd-ec26-410d-b69a-9347166b13cd

After disabling everything in startup and doing one update at a time it began to work. However one update resulted in Win7 no longer booting and I had to run Win7 repair CD to get it booting again!

I then finished off applying the rest of the updates manually and reenabled the startup items I had disabled.

This wasted at least a couple of hours of my day. Thanks MS!

Forget everything

I would say forget everything about the lads decision etc. Face the fact. Organ harvesting for cash is immoral if not illegal (Not sure about China and it's laws on this). His decision to sell one of his organs may have been stupid but he should not have had that opportunity presented to him in the first place. They should also be chasing the surgeons who took it out and give them sentences for attempted murder (which may turn into actual murder if he dies).

But this is China we are talking about here.

This saddens and disgusts me. Such a messed up world we live in.

Megaupload's founder downloads on Hollywood

Dick Emery
Thumb Down

Told you so

I basically said this when he was arrested. They (The US cartels and their lapdogs the feds and gubberment) don't give a toss about this guy. They only wanted him out of the picture and his business dead. The easiest method of doing this is to do exactly what they are doing. Delay, delay, delay. All the while he is fighting the system his business is out of action and puts the willies up all the other companies doing the same thing.

The problem here is that he has no means to fast track through the courts. Just like many others who are 'in the spotlight' their cases drag on for months if not years. It's all a ruse. The US knows 'exactly' what it is doing. Sure they may lose their case. But by that time Megaupload will be dead and buried and they will have already won.

DAT OST

Loved the two seasons and the movies. Very cerebral at times. Clever, witty and action packed when it's needed. I particularly loe the soundtracks. In my eyes Yoko Kanno and do not wrong. Sure she plagiarizes occassionally but it's hard to be totally original ALL of the time. Her work with various little known artists are amazing. I also love her forays into jazz. I think she also sings but under a pseudonym

So much talent in one little lady. It's simply mindblowing.

My parents purchased a 42" a few years back. Now they think it looks too small in the space it occupies. I have a 50" myself and I could always do with bigger. 100" would not be too big. I would get projection if it was not so expensive to run, noisy and does not work too well during the daytime hours unless you black out the windows..

Other sites such as torrentfreak will gladly divulge such things. As it stands the UK has become more and more a police state where censorship and oppression are becoming the norm, that soon you won't be able to talk about anything not approved by the state.

Soon we will all have electronic tags implanted at birth to follow us everywhere and cameras in our domiciles to make sure we are not doing anything 'naughty'. You think I am joking? Just you wait.

VLC is terrible. At least if you want to use it for home cinema playback. MPC-HC all the way! Mind you my setup is rather esoteric (ffdshow, MAdVR, LAV etc). I have way to play nearly every format in exactly the way I want (like auto switching HDTV refresh etc for PAL, NTSC etc).

I personally use AVG which works fine. I tend to switch based on the latest reviews though. I prefer XNViewMP beta over Irfanview right now (It displays transaparent PNG's correctly) although it can be a bit buggy on occasion.

I am not sure 7-zip adds right click context menus to Explorer. I like the way in Winrar you can right click and 'extract here'.

I was in McDonals the other day and just out of curiousity decided to put their free wifi (also supplied by O2) to the test. I got the landing page and was aksed for my mobile number. I put it in and it said I would get the auth code in a text message. A few minutes later....nothing. I tried again. Again nothing. I gave up and left. Later that evening several hours later I received a text message with the code. Fat lot of use that was. I wonder if I can now use that code if I got to ANY McDonalds. What's the betting I cannot or it has a timeout after 30 minutes?

If you don't see this as anything other than what it really is (just another means for them to censor out what they don't want you to see or hear. I.E. more control over the internet) you are a fool.
