"Biting The Hand That Feeds IT"

Yep, this story fits right in with the mantra of "The Register". Oh I forgot, LL is wearing a techy device so I guess IT qualifies her as fodder for this site. Works for me.

If you're going to be dumb, you better be tough. She'll serve three weeks if that much and she'll be segregated from other inmates. What a piece of work.

Pasis because even she knows to stay away from LL. Or at least out of sight.

THE Problem ...

... is generic to all current new college graduates. They've been told since they were toddlers they could do anything they want to. One result of that teaching philosophy is new college graduates believe they should start at the top, or near the top. They have no concept of "paying your dues" or as we once of the military learned ... "time in rate".

Unless you're learning surgery, or some other ultrasophisticated skill such as surgery, a college degree is little more than a right of passage. Problem is the current herd of college graduates actually believe a degree gives them the skills they need to do the job they might get hired for. Once they face the "learning curve" of specific job skills they need in their new position they instantly feel cheated or lied to ... or both.

Marketing

It all comes down to marketing and on which field you choose to do battle. On those fields where Microsoft understands the market, and has chosen to fight, they have done extremely well. But what this leaves are voids where MS isn't so aggressive. On those fields other have done well.

Antenna Theory

Like I said, a little anntenna theory goes a long way. They may have really goofed and have the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR or just SWR) greater than 1.5:1. If that's case, and the antenna is not resonant, and no software "fix" will solve the problem, it'll take a physical change. The same holds true for what you're saying. Maybe this is why Apple is currently seeking to employee three antenna engineers. You certainly don't need this level of engineering expertise to alter the signal strength display, but you do need the engineers to deal with inductive coupling problems of hand held devices.

I still say just come out with a full wave vertical polarized dipole in a headgear arrangement and settle it all. Maybe an end fed vertical similar to through the glass you see on vehicles. Or maybe even revert to external antennas. You just can't beat a resonant stinger in free space.

Doug Glass
Go

Sorry, No

Attenuation is an expected lowering of signal strength because of a known parameter and is a physical attribute of that device. Let's say, for ease of calculation, a certain dual conductor windowed signal transmission wire (ladder line) attenuation is -3db per 100 feet. Remember, -3db cuts signal strength in half. Knowing that parameter, you can calculate loss of signal strength for any give length. For instance. If your rig sends 200 watts RF into a -3db rated ladder line that's 100 feet long you know your antenna's radiator is "seeing" 100 watts since half of 200 is 100. The signal is attenuated basically by the "resistance" of the copper wire; the wire actually warms up a bit because of this.

"Lossy" is a condition whereby something is causing the antenna system to operate less well than it should. If that same ladder line is laying on the metal roof of your shack, or maybe has fallen on the wet ground, it will be "lossy". In effect signal will be bled off. But in this case, to get rid of the lossy condition, just get the ladder line off the metal roof and off the ground. That's why we have "stand offs" to keep certain types of line away from certain materials. The metal objects and the ground make the line lossy and the condition can be changed. Attenuation is a physical attribute and cannot be change by simple means. For copper wire you'd have to get into metalurgical changes in the R&D department.

Because ...

.. The Sacred J has made himself "low hanging fruit". Whether they admit it, most people take a measure of satisfaction in seeing the self-proclaimed high and mighty layed low. Microsoft is s**t and we expect them to act like s**t so we've become accustomed to it. The Sacred J is usually right. But as my mate once asked me, "Had I rather be right or happy?". Apparently J has chosen to be right all the time and that generally makes you a target.

If you're one of the hundreds of thousands (millions???) who do the Lemming thing and simply click on the "Acrobat Reader" download button then it likely doesn't matter to you. Which is likely 99% of all desktop computer users in the first place. The only ones who really give a frakk about it one way or another are users who think of a computer as the end; most users think of it as a means ... a tool. It's just a hammer to them; nothing special, just a hammer. Break it; buy another. Muck it up, get a nerdy pseudo-friend to clean it up again. Of course then the user is usually subjected to endless barbs about mistreating the poor little thing. Or about being an irresponsible computer owner who should be defragging and updating rather then taking the kids to the park or the wife out to a nice restaurant. Oh well such is life ... them that's got one lives it; them that don't just worry about footprints and antennas.

Suspended Fanimation

All you have to do is attached the device to a headgear of sorts that suspends the unit right in front of the user's face. After all, that will solve two problems: the antenna's inductive coupling and allow the user to gaze at the device all the time thereby preventing withdrawal pains.

Ok, if it vibrates suspend it in front of their zipper or whatever.

Where's All The Screaming?

Let me get this straight. You buy the device, and own it, and subsequently install software of your choosing, and Google will remove the software if they don't like it and there's nothing you can do about it.

Where's all the righteous indignation that always follows articles talking about Microsoft Windows' kill switches and the like? I'm glad vehicle manufactures haven figured out how to do this. Buy a foreign part for your Ford truck and have Ford suddenly deactivated it at 70MPH on the interstate because they don't like who you bought it from. Wait, GM can do that with OnStar: shut you down when, well .... any time they feel like it. Oh I forget...has to be a ligetimate reason. Yeah right.

Wow, the electronic age is fabulous, just fabulous. I'm so pleased there are corporations out there that can think for me and make the right decisions for me. Those old farts who resist intrusions into their privacy and personal decisions are just so old fashioned and out of touch.

Oh I forget, it's the digital age and we don't own property any longer. We just rent it. Kind of like beer. You only rent it too then piss it away. But if I wanted to, I could buy a six pack and pour every drop down the drain. iPhone 4: Perfect for everyone, except humans

Inductive Coupling

It's called inductive coupling. In this case, the hand, just a tiny bit sweaty even though you think it's dry, inductively couples with the antenna and basically "steals" signal. The fact that this device allows this to the extent demonstrated indicates an extremely poorly designed RF antenna circuit.

The only cheap, practical fix is to create distance between the antenna and hand. Insulation is worthless. You can confirm this simply by observing any "through the glass" cell phone antenna. Glass is a nearly perfect electrical insulator at the voltages of modern communications devices, but the RF signal penetrates the glass easily. Some tinted windows will attenuated the signal, but these are generally not a large problem given the proximity of cell phone towers. The iPhone has a large problem.

Looks like the iPhone needs a clunky case in which to center it and keep hands at a distance. Or a speaker phone app maybe.

If I were a fanatical juvenile, I'd be really angry. But since I use a Palm Pre Plus with outstanding RF quaities I'm happy. And damn! Look at the cost you FJs are forking over for a K-Mart quality phone. Makes me, well... laugh. :+)

It Didn't Exist Yesterday,...

... it exists today because you created it; therefore, it's a new thing and it's rightfully patentable. If your logic is followed, nothing can be patented because its initial form is not hardware. Intellectual property is as real as it gets and those who say not are immature, undereducated and ill informed.

The law is the law. If you don't like the law then get off the whiny sidelines and get into the fight to change it. Otherwise the pissers and moaners are nothing more than laughable buffoons.

Runs in background and even on the ancient CPU performance is not degraded noticibly.

I had a choice, teach to the 10% who would never get it, teach to the 10% that would get it no matter what or teach to the 80% that actually benefitted from instruction. The 80% got my effort and so it was with all the schools I was ever associated with. New teachers hungry to save the world did so for maybe two years. Then realizing they had no life, a crumbling family situation and little to no community support had a change of heart. Was that the best thing ro do? No, but teaching to the 80% was the least of all the evils.
