Mozilla pushes out final Firefox 5 test build

bigolslabomeat

Conspicuous in its absence

Not really interested in an upgrade until I see "Fixed memory leaks" on the changelist.

When a browser with a single tab open can use more RAM than VirutalBox running a whole OS in it, something needs fixing.

Hoxton social media types hit by Silicon Roundabout power cut

"UK" Power Networks

UKPN aren't actually a new company, just a slight renaming of some of EDF's old haunts. Their website is just EDF's with a new logo and some photoshopped logos on the vans. God knows why they've made this change, could it be to remove the French connection?

Anyway, UKPN are just as bad as EDF were, we've had 10 powercuts in 12 months, so I don't hold out much hope for these people getting their supplies back any time soon.

MS freebie anti-virus scanner auto-downloads provoke more anger

bigolslabomeat
Thumb Up

I like it

"The download is only offered to Windows users who aren't already running anti-virus software."

Not true, on a recent virus riddled PC, McAffee was installed (no surprise there) and after the clean up, but before uninstalling McAffee, MSE was offered as an optional download.

I wanted to get rid of McAffee and install MSE anyway, but just pointing out that it does get offered even with a virus checker installed.

Dell bars Win 7 refunds from Linux lovers

I've done it

Ordered a number of Dell machines without any OS on it at all (thus saving the need to even send it back) even when Win7 was the only option. You just need to speak to someone in the order process.

They are nice enough to throw in a disc with FreeDOS on it and drivers for said OS. So good luck getting the network card to work if it's your only PC.

Newspapers slam BBC iPhone app plans

bigolslabomeat

Yes please

"The corporation plans to launch services that would throw into serious doubt the commercial sector’s ability to make a return on its investment, and therefore its ability to support quality journalism."

AHA HA HA HA HA

Maybe if more of the papers actually started providing quality journalism they'd be able to compete with the BBC, not that their is of *that* high a quality, but it's better than a lot (El Reg exempted of course).

O2 and Be Broadband speeds dip

bigolslabomeat
Grenade

Virgin tops?

They provide a good speed until you reach your 750MB cap for the day, then you're slapped down to 2MB/s for 5 hours. Presumably these tests/numbers have been taken only from people running at full speed.

Ode to the Phoenix Mars Lander

Best twitterer ever

I loved Phoenix's tweets and managed to get all sentimental about a chunk of metal on a distant rock. Whoever was responsible for writing them deserves a promotion!

Phoenix, you will be missed, let's hope you can boot up again when the summer comes around somewhere in Sol 2010.

Doesn't require facebook to fail

We once had a guy call in sick with bad guts, later in the day he ordered himself a hot and spicy meat feast pizza using his work email.

AVG tags ZoneAlarm as Trojan

bigolslabomeat

Sounds like it's working

ZoneAlarm is a massive pain in my ass, whenever a home user has issues connecting to a website or some other network program the first question is always "Do you have Zone Alarm installed?", at which point if they say yes then I get them to turn it off and problems magically go away.

Not to mention the fact that AVG is dead slow and bloated (as mentioned before).

Avast is the future! (until it bloats as well)

Another software ban on the network

Just done the all staff email banning this from being installed. Good work Google, I was enjoying Chrome for a while there.

It's rubbish

I've had it for a while now and it has meant I've stopped using iGoogle as my home page. They layout is ruined, it takes longer to load and they've expanded certain boxes without the option to shrink them and made other smaller without the opportunity to make them larger.

Add to that their "feedback" form offers no way of commenting on the new layout, only iGoogle in general, you can't even say "i prefer the old one and I want it back".

Suprise at spelling snafu sanctions

Criminology students..

..clearly aren't a bright bunch, some of those suggestions are just stupid, not "variations", pure stupidity.

Certainly not a techy bunch as they must be writing all their coursework by hand, either that or they've not learnt what that little red squiggly line means.

Dissapointed

I find the use of a crappy Astra with a camera on a pole really upsetting, I was hoping for some giant van/truck thing with cameras all over it and aerials and point things, rather like the mapping trucks:

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/teleatlas-mapping-van-a1000.php

Anyway, I'm safe, there's a 6'9'' bridge on my road and i doubt the pilots of this will bother to get out and take the thing off just to get an extra 10ft of imagery.

(where's the angel/devil icon for Sergey or Larry? I guess no-one owuld recognise them!)

Wi-LAN expands Wi-Fi litigation net

Do they actually invent anything?

Or just buy patents then sue people?

Considering the two headline categories on their home page are "Litigation Update" and "Technology Aquicistion Program", I'd go with the latter.

O2: We didn't know we were capping 3G data speeds

bigolslabomeat

Apparently I have an HSDPA connection

And always have.

So why does the speed test show it as only being 121kbp/s at peak?

To test for yourself go to http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed on your mobile.

I will test my speed regularly this week and see if O2 fulfill their promise, but I don't hold out much hope that they will!
