User data stolen in Sony PlayStation Network hack attack

Bill Cumming

Data might not be stolen...

...According to reports a custom firmware for the PS3 is in the wild, making slim consoles in to "developers" consoles.

This gives them access to the PSN Developers network as well as the main PSN,

The upside was being able to bypass checks on games and a few other security hurdles.

But they found a bug (or major FUBAR) where creditcard details are not checked to see if the user owns it with simple name/account check (or even if the card number was a valid one e.g. 16x1's would work.)

Letting people with this firmware but anything they liked on the PSN.

No, iPhone location tracking isn't harmless and here's why

Bill Cumming

Before anyone jumps up...

Yes android phones have a couple of files like the Iphones .db file.

But in the android's case the data is overwritten after a few days or hours, depending in the number of locations it picks up..

In my case it goes back 3 days, and I'm in a rural area, in a large city it may only hold the past 24h or less of locations.

Anyway the android files only hold between 50 wifi locations and up to 200 mobile tower locations at any one time. Root access is required to view them.

Buy a can of Ferrari Red Spray paint.

Mask of the bits of the iPad2 you don't want covered in paint (i.e. the camera!)

There's been a rumour for the past few months..

... That Amazon US might start offering Kindles (wi-fi) for free with the Amazon Prime accounts.

(This has been going rounds for a few months, so not sure if it's accurate!)

It's $79 for the Prime account, so Amazon losing $20 or so per kindle, but having them locked into Amazons system coupled with the *Free* Streaming Movie service for Prime accounts it might pay off for Amazon in the long run...

Dragon Age II

Bill Cumming

*note* Don't buy the boxed version...

... Going against a ruling by a US Judge, EA must label clearly if the game uses "SecureROM" DRM on the packaging and in the specs. (Google "EA Spore + Secure ROM")

But reports (a couple currently) that the Boxed retail version installs SecureROM without the users knowledge.

It works fine under Linux (flash player)

If Google does not stick the videos in annoying restricted DRM's (i.e. Require a specific player in mac and Win only) I'll be tempted to join.

But with the Free Streaming I've got with Amazon at the moment it's gotta have a bigger (or better) selection for me to be tempted to switch...

Just because it's been in the T&C's for 5 years does not mean Sony have actually been doing all of those checks?

It may have been a "Belt & Braces" move by the Legal department at the time, to give them room to create a "back door" at a future point without having to publish a "Revised/Updated" T&C.

IPTV UK: failure to launch?

Bill Cumming

@ The Indomitable Gall

That's all well and good if you're in a Virgin cabled area!!

What about the majority of the country which Virgin have not placed cable???

Until Virgin CABLE is available in 80% of homes they should not get a say in National IPTV service.

They cherry pick the area and ignored the rest of the country.

BT's efforts in FTTC should be what Virgin should be doing, rolling out fibre to more areas.

YouView will fare better than Virgin's efforts in the longrun since it will be open to a larger consumer base...

Apple tightens screws on hardware hackers

Bill Cumming

Torax Screws

They have been around for YEARS. i've got No.5 & No.6 size torax screwdrivers that probably open most of the mobiles around...

I got them over 7 years ago. Any half decent hardware store (online or off) should stock them.

They were a couple of quid each..

Missing - SpiderOak and Ubuntu One

OK Guys

I can see why you didn't include UbuntuOne since it's Thought to be Ubuntu only. But with the Windows client coming out or beta soon you might have wanted to take a look at that. (The Ubuntu One Music stream function is a nice feature)

But not including or mentioning SpiderOak? That's probably one of the most secure (i.e. no snooping by the hosts at your files) out of all the ones listed.

The ability to back up your machine's encrypted data to both a Cloud server and a local drive means you've got both a quick recovery of a machine as well as a secure remote storage.

I've used SpiderOak for nearly 2 years now! I've used it a lot (lot more than I would have thought) as a backup solution.

I use SpiderOak for my whole system and UbuntuOne for my personal documents and music. Both are easy to use and setup (SpiderOak can be slow when doing the first few big backups but after that you hardly notice it.)

T-Mobile imposes swingeing cuts on fair use data limits

Bill Cumming

Check the fine print for the get out clause:

If you go over the 500Mb limit will it cost you or have an adverse effect on your usage?

Did you not get sufficient notice of "change of terms and conditions"

If so then you might have a get out clause:

2.11.2. If You are a Consumer and the change is of material

detriment to You, We will send You Written Notice 30 days

before the terms and conditions are due to change. The

new terms and conditions will apply to You once that

notice has run out, unless You terminate Your Agreement

with Us within that notice period. If You do this You won’t

have to pay any Cancellation Charge that would otherwise

apply, see point

Sky confirms UK Online closure

Bill Cumming
Dead Vulture

SKY Broadband and calls have nothing to do with SKYBroadband.

Looks like you were one of the lucky few that actually got about the only person at SKY Broadband Support that knew what they talk about!

But UKOnline's support started at Teir 2 (Teir 1 are general "support script readers") and who could actually tweek the ADSL setting while you were on the line with them,

If you say; "I want to turn interleveing off on my line" to a SKY Broadband Support they would probably not know what you're talking about.

Also looks like most of UKO's support team will not go over to SKY's Support (some are based in the same building), I think that's by choice!

I'm sorry to see it go! Never had a major problem with them...

I'm off to greener pastures!

So did Windows Phone 7 'bomb in US'?

Bill Cumming

If you watched any major US TV show last week...

In America, nearly every major action, Drama show had a Microsoft mobile Product placement in them.

Worse one was during "Hawaii-Five-0" it was nearly a 30 second "ad" badly written into the script...

Went something like this: "oh! let me just 'Bing" this artist on my new mobile" (cut to Windows Mobile screen and Bing search popping up....)

Sky confirms Easynet sell-off

Nokia snaffles user data on the down-low

Bill Cumming

A non-story anyone?

The "MyNokia" auto opt-in have been in every standard Nokia Firmware for the past 5+ years!

The Networks usually remove it in their version of the Firmware but if you've ever gotten or de-branded, a nokia with the default regional Firmware guess what! the "MyNokia" there when you finish the update.

(*Note* I just de-branded my E63 that I got Branded from "3" to the Euro default Firmware. Guess what's there, yup the "MyNokia" )
